Lance White is an excellent family lawyer. He helped me get through an incredibly ugly divorce and I am forever grateful. I got a second chance at life, thanks to him. He is smart, efficient, understanding, and thorough. He is also patient and willing to hear you out, unlike some. I would highly recommend his services. S.S.K.

Lance White has been my lawyer for over three years and has done an EXCELLENT job in not only fighting for me but also PROTECTING my interests! He is very straightforward and has told me what to expect each step of the way. He has kept me informed of each step and what the options were and what the risks were. There were no empty promises made just to keep the client happy, which I know sometimes occurs when seeking counsel. He is hard-working, thorough, professional, and insightful, especially when it comes to complex legal issues, and exceeds your expectations. I highly recommend him for any family court needs you might have.

Fabulous, thorough, and unbelievably knowledgeable in their field. Lance took care of my divorce with children and an EPO. HE not only took most the stress off my shoulders, but legitimately got me every single thing I requested, including primary custody, child support, and alimony. So impressed with his thoroughness and even more impressed with the outcome.

Travis Clark was phenomenal in putting together my divorce package after I was served. He listened to what I would like to see happen. We developed a game plan that he perfectly executed. Worked with the opposing attorney to resolve conflicts and provide clarification on matters of concern. Travis's advise was invaluable. In the hour before seeing the judge a big last minute detail had to be worked out. It was expertly handled to my benefit. In the court proceedings Travis worked with the court to ensure I received terms beneficial to myself and my future. Very, very satisfied with the outcome of the divorce proceedings, far better than anything I had expected. Well done Travis, I am in your debt. Thank you.

Kim Surratt is not only a great lawyer, she's a good person. She walked me through the hell that was my divorce, counseled me through the difficult decisions about the children, custody, child support, etc. and helped keep from going crazy when everything in my life was upside down. Divorces suck. There's no way around that. Having someone on my side that was empathetic to what I was going through, but was able to maintain a business mind about the whole thing was crucial to me making good decisions and not fighting just to fight because I was pissed. I've been back several times because of custody issues, and she's helped me navigate the ridiculousness of a crazy ex who happens to be the mother of my kids. I honestly don't think anyone could have done a better job.

Kim Surratt is a very special person to me. From the moment Kim took on my son's case, she worked so hard to achieve the right outcome. I believe that Kim saved my son's life, and strengthened our entire family. Our custody case was very difficult and lasted eight years. Kim was by my side, always giving me good advice, helping me have the strength to continue the battle, and saw our case to a proper final conclusion. I will always be grateful that I had Kim as my attorney.

I didn't want to hire a lawyer. I thought I could do all relevant research myself. After extensive research of all applicable statutes, I concluded I needed a lawyer and consulted several. Elizabeth Bitter impressed me as the most knowledgeable. In fact she quickly provided the statute I needed and had merely glanced over. Ms Bittner accompanied me to court and was the key into the successful outcome of a complicated case.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Reno, Nevada?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
