Thanks to Mr. Sullivan, my marriage-based green card application was approved in less than 5 months. I understand immigrants very well. What is important for us in this process is that we are looking for a lawyer who will make us feel safe, who will answer our questions knowledgeably and clearly, and who will spare time for us. For these features, Mr. Sullivan is the right address for a quality and disciplined lawyer.

This is based off the sheriff fact that A) it seems impossible to get any information on consultation prices B) The receptionist have mild attitude when I ask for a response and help as I've messaged and called multiple times C) absolutely zero responsiveness after phone calls and emails. Seems like a grate lawyer but I already have an unresponsive one and don't want another

Got to know John and his brother Andy as teens when they lived in Florida. Had a car accident while on biz in Gloucester, Mass. John handled it. Settled it quick and with no aggravations. I highly recommend John and his firm to handle a personal injury, real estate or whatever legal needs you may have. Thank you John. 5 stars!!

Brent made the complex process of applying for U.S. permanent residency much more manageable. He was patient, thorough, and took the time to answer all of our questions (of which there were many!). We recommend working with Brent for any immigration needs that you might have - his years of experience and familiarity with USCIS processes are second to none.

Brent has been an invaluable asset and advocate for myself and my husband throughout our entire immigration journey. We began working with Mr. Poirier during early 2020 and are just finishing up with him now as we await the naturalization oath ceremony. Brent's knowledge and advice is worth its weight in gold. He prepared seamless applications for us and was always available and reachable for any question—big or small. Do yourself a favor and hire a professional to navigate the road to immigration and citizenship with you; it will save you the most precious resource of all, your time. Thank you Brent and God bless!

We had to switch attorneys midway through a long stressful lawsuit after the previous attorney was overcharging and underperforming for us. We found Marc after asking a friend for a referral. He took over the pre trial phase in a way that restored our confidence in the system and our case. By the time we got to trial Marc's iron fist in a velvet glove ,combined with his knowledge of the nuances of our case and the case law , resulted in a slam dunk for us. We would recommend him without hesitation. J Landis

Attorney Marc McDonald came highly recommended by a close friend of the family. Attorney McDonald did not disappoint. The very first meeting, he listened intently as I explained the circumstances of the case. He asked a multitude of questions, gathered documents and developed a clear and concise plan of action. He guided me through the lengthy and daunting legal process with his invaluable knowledge of the law. He gave me practical and expert advice which I then used to make informed decisions. His exceptional communication skills were key in making the process less stressful for me. He responded to every e-mail, phone call, or voicemail personally and promptly. I was kept apprised of every correspondence from either the court or opposing counsel. I was never left in the dark. Attorney McDonald was extremely patient despite my frequent and at times overwhelming inquiries. He worked tirelessly to resolve any areas of concern that I had. His many years of experience as an attorney, helped me to trust his instincts. They were always "spot on". He exceeded every expectation I had. When the two day trial finally came, he arrived on time, well-prepared, confident and focused. He was and is a skilled litigator. I knew I was in very capable hands. Attorney McDonald is a man of integrity. He is a humble and quiet man by nature, but don't let that lead you to believe that you don't have the absolute best advocate fighting on your behalf. You do! He uses his years of experience and legal knowledge to present the merits of your case. You can trust that his commitment to you and your case is his top priority! I would not hesitate to use or refer his outstanding legal services to my family, friends or colleagues now or in the future. He is a consummate professional. I am forever grateful for his unwavering support during one of the most emotional and stressful times in my life.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Portsmouth, New Hampshire?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
