Karl provided excellent legal representation in protecting me from a very difficult and aggressive tenant who would not vacate my home at the end of the lease, and even had the audacity to sue me for not renewing the lease, when it was within my legal rights. This whole ordeal, along with the bullying from my tenant and the huge fear of navigating in the unfamiliar legal process and court systems, was mentally, emotionally and physically difficult. Karl provided a sense of peace, and perfectly handled the case and all subsequent matters with competence, sympathy and understanding. His whole team were also amazing with direct, efficient communication.

I must say that Norgaard, O'Boyle & Hannon helped take a huge weight off my shoulders. As a creditor who had all his investment savings in a company that filed for bankruptcy, I felt like I had no voice and there was no where to turn. Cassandra helped me to understand where I stood contractually. I spent months trying to understand bankruptcy law, but within one day Cassandra helped to become clear about where I stood and which way to go. For anyone who is going through a difficult challenge like a bankruptcy I highly this firm and Cassandra, she helped me where I couldn't help myself.

I engaged this firm to evaluate my contracts and close my purchase on a condo. I'm a lawyer myself and I know what I want in someone who represents me. Mark and Karl Norgaard were awesome. They were far easier to get in touch with than any lawyers I've ever hired or met- I was never chasing their voicemail or asking for calls back. My real estate purchase was small potatoes for attorneys with this level of expertise but they never treated my case like it was small or unimportant. When the attorney responsible for my case briefly went on vacation, my case was handed to an equally competent lawyer who clearly had already been brought up to date on my matter. I want to especially highlight Carol, the paralegal extraordinaire, who managed everything about my case with both kindness and precision. I would have been willing to pay more for legal services of this caliber- the price was extremely reasonable for the high level of quality representation I received. Thanks Mark, Karl, and Carol- I love my new home and I appreciate your work!

Robert Agresta is an exceptional young lawyer with a lot of talent and knowledge to bring to the table. I have sought his advice for a number of different legal issues, and he as answered every question with professionalism and discernment. While he tends to focus on corporate transactions, his advice regarding property acquisitions has proven invaluable, and so has his assistance in in completing transactions of this nature. He is diligent in his reviews of contracts that I have sent him, and he has even gone beyond his specialty to give me advice with regard to immigration law. It is clear that he truly cares for his clients because when he feels he has inadequate knowledge about a particular specialty, he either goes out of his way to learn more so as to provide me with sound legal advice, or he researches who will be better able to assist me when it comes to certain problems. Robert's extensive insight about local government is also incredible. His position as a council president has enabled him to learn a great deal about the workings of small town politics, and has given the experience necessary to advise about successful campaign management. I would recommend seeking Mr. Agresta's advice should you have any legal question at all. You can count on a reliable answer from a man who is most assuredly looking out for your best interest.

Rob Silber came highly recommended. Since I'm a first-time seller, he clearly outlined the process to me and made me feel very comfortable. Selling a property can be very intimidating and complicated, but he kept things simple and easy to understand. Up to the last day (closing date), he kept me informed and was highly responsive to all my questions. In addition, his staff was very helpful and a pleasure to deal with. All in all, I would highly recommend Mr. Silber as a true professional in his trade.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Englewood, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
