Karen went above and beyond to help me prove my innocence during family court, as I was being falsely accused of many things. Given a very stressful situation, she helped ease my anxiety a bit, as she was very knowledgeable and I felt confident in her. Overall, she is an amazing lawyer, and also a genuine person. That being said, I would absolutely recommend Karen Svendsen. Karen, thank you for all of your help!

Divorce is hard, but a lot harder when you are a caring and supportive father who does not want to be away from your children. Karen helped me obtain a fair divorce in which custody and support were split evenly between both of us. This definitely took some effort to obtain. Overcoming the court’s bias towards the mother was difficult to overcome, but possible with Karen's guidance. Over the past 16 years, Karen has represented me three times, for my divorce, child support modification and child support termination request. Each time she has taken the time to provide me the best possible outcome. I highly recommend Karen and have recommended her to friends over the years.

Karen Svendsen is an excellent lawyer, her knowledge of the law is amazing. I had an attorney prior who for 2 years could not get my divorce finalized a Truly inept lawyer. I was referred to Karen who accomplished in 2 weeks, what he couldn’t do in 2 1//2 years. She has a key sense for what needs to be done, she is very attentive to her clients needs. I don’t know where I would be without her. I am finally divorced, and it’s all due to Karen Svendson’s knowledge of the law. I am eternally grateful. I highly recommend her.

Karen helped me and my daughters through a very difficult time. Divorce is never easy, but ours got ugly! Karen is extremely knowledgeable in all areas of divorce law and guided me through each step of the way, while helping me maintain my sanity! The opposing attorney was ruthless, although he thought he was, but Karen never backed down, she stood her ground and fought tooth and nail for what she knew we deserved. I would highly recommend her! I want to give a shout out to her paralegal Christina who is top notch. She maintained constant contact with me, and kept me abreast of everything that was going on in a timely fashion. They make an awesome team, one that you won’t regret hiring!

My husband and I were referred to Karen Svendsen for representation in a case that seemed almost hopeless. Karen agreed to represent us against an unscrupulous investment adviser that we had trusted. From the moment we met Karen we knew we were in good hands and she would do everything possible to help us get justice. Having her in our corner standing up for us meant we were no longer helpless victims. We can't thank Karen and her paralegal Christina enough for their hard work on our behalf. Karen won the case for us and we are forever grateful. Karen is an excellent attorney and a good person who really cares. We highly recommend Karen Svendsen.

I met Mr. Antonio Salva in court as I was answering a DMV violation. I approached Mr. Salva after he finished Consulting a client and asked for his services. I retained his OUTSTANDING services for a very affordable price. Mr. Salva s professional and advocated for me which resulted in a successful result. I refer Mr. Salva, who is bilingual (Spanish and English), to all who need a lawyer to defend them and who's genuine.

Dan Represented me in a felony graffiti case over ten years ago. I found this page while searching for him to retain him for the future and figured I'd leave a review. Mr Driscoll was able to get my charges plead down to nothing compared to the original offer and fought for my to have an opportunity to turn my life around and I really appreciate that. I remember Dan being at my arraignment the day after I was arrested and I remember him being very punctual and extremely ontop of things although I'm sure I was one of many cases at the time. Thanks a lot Dan, I appreciate what you were able to do for me.

Dan, represented me on a dispute with my employer. He laid out what he thought about the case with me up front and tirelessly worked the case to a satisfactory resolution. I know that criminal work is his specialty, but I would not hesitate to call him again if I need a lawyer on a civil matter.

I could not have been happier with Mr. Driscoll. He was very knowledgable and delivered even better results in the case than I had anticipated. He also showed compassion and integrity, which unfortunately, seems to be the exception in this field.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Bay Shore, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
