I had been recommended the firm of Altman & Altman by one of my clients, who insisted that this firm was timely and professional in their earnest recommendation. My client had even stated them to be a “pro-real estate agents” firm that would put forth an honest and uttermost effort to assist their clientele, and after my experience I can only conclude that my friend must have unfortunately confused their assistive firm with this one. Yet, in my experience, this firm seemed to be concerned with the matter of my payment transference first and foremost, and customer service was a distant afterthought. Not only did I have to facilitate any kind of interaction with the firm on my behalf, but I was always reliably let down and at least mildly upset with every interaction with the firm. The representative that answered the phone goes by the name Suzy (receptionist) always conducted herself in a terse and distant manner, and the customer service I had received during this transaction was unsatisfactory and hollow. The appointments that were scheduled by the firm were always with the priority of fitting it ‘neatly’ in to the firm’s schedule, with little to no consideration of my own. There was rarely a time when I was able to have any of these meetings in a condition satisfactory to my needs, and I was typically frustrated at every ‘result’ that occurred. The point of my transaction was for closing the deal, a costly process and business that can’t afford constant delay and miscommunication. The irregularities in the scheduling of our meetings, including the terse atmosphere I was often presented with, lead to conclusion that I was not entirely convinced couldn’t have been handled more properly elsewhere. At first believing this to simply be a gross oversight and dire miscommunication, I had attempted to contact the office numerous times to express my confusion. What had started as a big misunderstanding quickly revealed itself to be an issue of miscommunication that plagued our relationship and soured the transaction. Instead of being treated with the tailored and specialized care that I had been recommended to them with, I felt more like my request had been “processed”, and that I had simply become a ‘number in a ledger’ to them, without the personal attention I had honestly expected from our initial agreement. Outraged by the overall handling of my affairs, and the conclusively negative results that I had endured, it convinced me that the least I could do was post a warning so others won’t fall to the same unsatisfying end as I did. It was to my disheartened surprise to find a cautionary warning from their office, claiming that attempting to conduct business and right these wrongs were “harassment to the persons of their office”, and had since been requested to cease before legal action had been taken. This reactionary response to my explicit requests for more time with the legal team has threatened me not only financially, but now approaching legal measures. I simply seek to warn anyone who seeks to do business with them that they should proceed with caution.

wanted and willing to purchase a condo at 327 Admiral Lane in the Bronx. This was really a waste of time and money from beginning to end. Mr. Altman was the seller's attorney and I would not deal with any transaction that has his name. it was a back and forth between him and my lawyer for a "Willfull Default" a word on the contract of sale and condo violation and he ended up returning my check for the downpayment and deal was cancelled. Thank you God deal was cancelled because the property went for sale before and was put on the market again God knows what reasons. 2 deals cancellation for the same property within 2months.

Hiram and I worked at the same office for almost 10 years and since then have joined forces on other cases. He is a tireless advocate of victims' rights and a fearless advocate who will leave no stone unturned in pursuit of justice for his clients. I would wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone seeking compensation for their injuries.

I have been working with Mr. Raldiris for eight years as a colleague and I have known him to be an excellent lawyer of the highest integrity. He will obtain for you the best possible result under the circumstances of your case. He does not simply accept what the insurance company says they will pay. If the insurance company refuses to pay fair and just compensation he will take them to court - and he always gets great results.

Hiram and the entire Peña & Kahn staff are professional and treat you as family. It was evident to me from day one that this was the firm I wanted representing me. Hiram truly cares about your case and treats you as a friend , not as another number . Highly educated and knows his stuff. Do not hesitate to retain Mr. Raldiris!

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Bronx, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
