Ms. Aughtry is everything you want in an attorney. She's above all is trustworthy. She handled all of my mother's affairs before and after she passed. She took personal time with each member of our immediate family in settling mom's will.

What an amazing attorney!! Dewette is sincere and honest. She is very meticulous and thorough, she walks you thru everything. Never leaves anything out. True to her word you’ll get what she promises or you’ll get very close to it. She’s very patient and highly intelligent. Not afraid to go against anything or anyone nor is she afraid to challenge the opposition. Know that with Dewette you are in great hands. She is worth every dime she charges. It was my absolute pleasure to work with her. I learned so much from her. She was truly one of the best decisions I ever made. The best part in my experience with Dewettte is that we worked together. She kept me informed on every step that was being taken, she never misguided me. My divorced was a lot of unnecessary work due to the fact that I was married to someone who thrives on trying to “get over and misguide everyone”. But she saw through it all and was on top of everything. I promise anyone who retains Dewette that you will never be sorry - she is a winner at heart!

I've had a real estate problem for a few years now. I've gone through a few shady lawyers and a few consultant groups that claim they would help me but never did. Instead they drained me dry of my earnings. A friend referred me to Mrs. Aughtry, but I didn't call on her because I was already sick and distrusting of lawyers. I have another lawyer helping me with my mediation for my home in NJ but I got sued by the collectors and needed help. My current lawyer would not help me with that and claimed that the medication would put a stop to it, but the mediation date was not set yet. I went to Mrs. Aughtry for a second opinion and she was very open and honest with me. She even went out of her way to assist me with the current lawsuit although she couldn't represent me. This is what a real lawyer represents, not just the ones that are looking for a paycheck. Unfortunately there are just too many of them to speak of, but obviously, Mrs. Aughtry is not one of them. If you need a good, honest and helpful lawyer that is not full of nonsense and not just looking for a paycheck, but is willing to see you through and is up front? She is the one. The other thing is, if she can help you, you are getting one of the best lawyers they have out there. I wish I had contacted her sooner or else I wouldn't have all of the problems I have now.

I walked into a marriage some years ago never considering that there could be a dark side of what was considered happiness. I did not fool myself to think that everything would be perfect and it was a happy ever after life. I know that in life there are some things that come up that one just needs to deal with, whether you want to or not. The potholes that I saw others hit and go over became very different when I hit it. Seeing a jolt and feeling a jolt is two different things. Our once happy union became a consented separation. An in house separation became an out of the house separation which not long after, lead to papers some five years later when I received a letter from her attorney. I felt threatened and knew I would need a lawyer. I asked around and was told to give Dewette C. Aughtry a call and that she was a good lawyer. Upon giving her a call and setting up a meeting she first asked “are you sure this is what you want to do?” She asked about the history of my marriage, what lead to this, how my wife viewed things, how I viewed things and what step we had taken. As things went along Ms. Aughtry went to bat for me in fighting for me. There were times when I was fighting against myself. In the liquidation of things, I was told by my soon to be ex-wife that she wanted a certain amount of money and that I had good credit so I could go out and get it. At this point I was in rage and wanted it over and said I will give her what she wanted and get it over with. When I did not care my attorney did. Ms. Aughtry did not let me hurt myself with the many foolish moves I wanted to make. I am forever grateful that an attorney of her caliber was found at my level in life. On the last day of court, at the end of the proceeding the clerk said to me that she had witnessed a lot of cases and said that I was well represented, that my attorney did a great job. Dewette C. Aughtry came recommended to me and from my view she leaves Highly Recommended.

Many years ago, I had a very sensitive family issue that required legal counsel. I called the Brooklyn Bar Association, and described my problem, and was referred to the Law Offices of Dewette Aughtry and Associates. From our initial consultation, which was FREE, Ms Aughtry and her staff made me feel welcome, and that my concerns truly mattered. Not only were my issues resolved to my satisfaction, Ms Aughtry and her staff were not only informative, knowledgable, attentive, and professional, they got results. I had the pleasure of using Ms Aughtry again, a few years later on a severe tax issue, once again, Ms Aughtry and her staff came through with results. Her fees were quite reasonable in both of my cases, and ANYONE, looking for quality service, by seasoned professionals, look up Ms Aughtry, I'm glad I did.

I was looking for a lawyer to help me with the sale of my first house. I did know where to go so I did an internet search and found Mr. Miller's web site. It was really informative, so I gave him a call. Mr. Miller was terrific and since that time he has been my whole family's attorney. When my wife was injured in a car accident, thank God he was there to help us; when my aunt died he got us through probate; when my son got divorced his firm made sure that things were settled in a fair and reasonable manner. In short, if you are looking for a true family law firm in the heart of Brooklyn, New York, you can ask for none better.

I was recommended to Mr. Miller by a friend when I had some trouble with the police a while back. The police had grabbed me off the street and arrested me for a crime I did not commit - and when I asked to speak to a lawyer - they beat me up so badly that I wound up in the hospital for two weeks. I cannot recommend anyone more highly than Mr. Miller as a top flight criminal and civil attorney. Not only did he prove my innocence, now we are negotiating a substantial civil settlement with the city for the injuries caused by the police. This is why I call Andrew Miller Brooklyn's Best.

I was filled with trust in Aziz Juraev and confidence in his professionalism from the very first consultation with him. This was the first lawyer, at the very first conversation with whom, I had a feeling of confidence in the outcome of the trial. And this despite the fact that he did not promise mountains of gold and did not persuade him to become his client. From the moment the contract was concluded until the judge made a decision, I never doubted my choice. Throughout my journey, Aziz and his team guided me in the best possible way. All documents were submitted on time. During consultations with Aziz and Alexander, I was able to imagine how the court hearing was going and how to behave at it, and I was able to believe that my case was not without hope for success. They instilled in me faith in the American justice system, which can accept even words without indisputable documentary evidence as an argument. All this is possible due to the fact that judges are people too and believe in humanity. At the trial itself, Aziz behaved like a true professional. I am very glad that I made the right choice by choosing Aziz Juraev as my lawyer. I am sincerely grateful to Aziz and his entire team.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Brooklyn, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
