When I showed up for my first meeting with Ms. Bernstein, I was in a panic. I needed help in a divorce against my ex, who made unreasonable and unfair demands and I didn't know what my rights were at all. It was the first time I ever needed legal help. She calmed me down, explained every single step to me and always told me what would be coming next. I know for a fact that she has gone "above and beyond" for me several times. One example: At times, my case was a bit difficult, since it also involved my mother having a share in the family home. The scenario was supposed to go down a typical route but she got in touch with me a short while after we discussed it and told me she'd done some reading and we had another option. I never had a problem getting in touch with her if I had a question or if something worried me. Even if she had a court appearance for another case, I always heard from her on the very same day. I also appreciated that she had a sense of humor and could joke with me at the times I dealt with my stress in that way. There were also times I felt fearful of a confrontation and she made me feel better then too, telling me she'd make sure that didn't happen. I know I'm not giving this review in the glowing words that might impress other lawyers but I'm giving it from my own point of view. Someone who was so scared of the whole process and what might happen to me by the time it was over and I just want others in my shoes to know it can be bearable if you find the right person to help you through it. I can't say enough good things about her and I'd recommend her to anyone I know.

Bonnie Bernstein! It is my privilege to highly recommend her to anyone who needs a family lawyer. She is extremely knowledgeable in the field of law and knows how to deal with complicated issues that arises in and outside the court room. Bonnie is meticulous, detail oriented, patient and her paper work and motions leave very little room for disputes from other attorneys. Through her aggressive but fair nature, she has earned the respect and admiration of her peers and judges alike. My divorce was lengthy and very emotionally draining. She was not just there for me all the time to provide the legal advice but she was there as my mentor and a life coach. She was able to control my impatience and tethered my worrisome conclusions. Her impressive language, logical explanations and convincing arguments made me even stronger and confident in myself. Outside the court, she put away the legalese and buoyed my spirits with light humor and words of encouragement. My case was deliberately dragged on but Bonnie proved to the court that the issues were baseless and the court rewarded us legal fees reimbursement and a very good settlement. Are there rock stars in the legal field? Absolutely, and Bonnie Bernstein is way ahead of the pack. I would never use another attorney and have recommended her highly to all my friends. They too have positive feedback and would join me in recommending her.

The title of this review says it all. As a client for several years, I have had Ms. Bernstein handle a very contentious divorce, including post divorce problems; family matters and personal matters. I vetted several lawyers before choosing Ms. Bernstein (hereafter called Bonnie as preferred), some even charging up to $300 for consultations, which was at no cost with Bonnie. Working in Manhattan at the time made lawyers there easily accessible, but the vetting process and a "gut feeling" led me to choose Bonnie. I have not been disappointed. The trust we built together by excellent communication, with Bonnie's innate reading of my Type A personality keeping me calm and in check made our professional relationship so much more personal and friendly. As a professional person myself, I have a good deal of knowledge. She could tell me to stop and think. Inform me that my opinion may not be the proper legal way to proceed. Bonnie was always usually right. No one wants my opinion any longer, they ask "What does Ms. Bernstein think?" I have recommended Bonnie to the only one friend seeking divorce, but to many others who need almost any legal services. I am not one of those gushing reviewers. But when AVVO wanted me to rate Ms. Bernstein, I was happy to respond. I believe it was the movie "Philadelphia" that Tom Hanks quotes the joke "What Do You Call 100 Lawyers At The Bottom Of The Ocean? A Good Start." I heartily concur! Bonnie G. Bernstein is the only lawyer I would dive to the bottom of the ocean to retrieve!

I can't say enough about Bonnie Bernstein. Not only is she extremely knowledgeable and dedicated to her profession, but I really felt like she cared about me as a person. She became my confidant and a true source of support, and she always billed fairly. With Bonnie I never felt alone, and in the end she got for me the best settlement I could wish for. She is a no nonsense, ethical, and very result oriented attorney who will fight or you but not make you go through more than you need to. Tough but down to earth.

I was looking for a lawyer to help me with the sale of my first house. I did know where to go so I did an internet search and found Mr. Miller's web site. It was really informative, so I gave him a call. Mr. Miller was terrific and since that time he has been my whole family's attorney. When my wife was injured in a car accident, thank God he was there to help us; when my aunt died he got us through probate; when my son got divorced his firm made sure that things were settled in a fair and reasonable manner. In short, if you are looking for a true family law firm in the heart of Brooklyn, New York, you can ask for none better.

I was recommended to Mr. Miller by a friend when I had some trouble with the police a while back. The police had grabbed me off the street and arrested me for a crime I did not commit - and when I asked to speak to a lawyer - they beat me up so badly that I wound up in the hospital for two weeks. I cannot recommend anyone more highly than Mr. Miller as a top flight criminal and civil attorney. Not only did he prove my innocence, now we are negotiating a substantial civil settlement with the city for the injuries caused by the police. This is why I call Andrew Miller Brooklyn's Best.

I was filled with trust in Aziz Juraev and confidence in his professionalism from the very first consultation with him. This was the first lawyer, at the very first conversation with whom, I had a feeling of confidence in the outcome of the trial. And this despite the fact that he did not promise mountains of gold and did not persuade him to become his client. From the moment the contract was concluded until the judge made a decision, I never doubted my choice. Throughout my journey, Aziz and his team guided me in the best possible way. All documents were submitted on time. During consultations with Aziz and Alexander, I was able to imagine how the court hearing was going and how to behave at it, and I was able to believe that my case was not without hope for success. They instilled in me faith in the American justice system, which can accept even words without indisputable documentary evidence as an argument. All this is possible due to the fact that judges are people too and believe in humanity. At the trial itself, Aziz behaved like a true professional. I am very glad that I made the right choice by choosing Aziz Juraev as my lawyer. I am sincerely grateful to Aziz and his entire team.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Brooklyn, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
