Was referred to Robert Wanker through a friend to assist me in litigation regarding a partition matter. He spent a great deal of time on my case and didn’t charge me up front for his services. Very bright and was able to help me when other attorneys failed to do so. I would use him again. He’s not out to just make money, enjoys helping others.

Mr. Wanker represented me in a divorce settlement and was able to finalize the matter in less then a year. I’m so grateful to have been referred to such a professional and knowledgeable attorney that has years of experience. I was impressed with his extensive areas of expertise. Whatever you need he will find a way to get it done. He’s patient and fair and knows how to make a deal. I would highly recommend Robert Wanker.

Robert was referred to me by the Brooklyn Bar Association when I needed a lawyer to handle my divorce. I was very satisfied with the way he negotiated for me, particularly when it came to my children. I have continued to consult with Robert after the divorce as well. He has been my attorney for 8 years. He drafted my will, sold my house, handled my mother's estate, and wrote a prenuptial agreement for my daughter. I find him to be straightforward, honest, friendly, understanding, and professional.

I initially hired Robert to prepare my family's wills, living wills, and healthcare proxies. He did it all timely, exactly to our specifications, and for a much more reasonable fee than other attorneys quoted me. He was polite, professional, and spent a lot of time making sure we were satisfied. He even came to us, rather than make us go to him, to notarize our documents. (House calls from an attorney!) Later I hired him to probate a will for my mother's estate. Again, he did everything quickly and efficiently. It wasn't a huge estate, so we were worried about paying a huge legal bill. Not with Robert. He understood our position and lowered his normal charges for us. Finally, I hired him to file a personal injury lawsuit. (I didn't even know he did that kind of law when I called to ask him for a referral.) He took my case, did the investigation, handled the depositions, and settled the case before we even had to go to trial. I didn't have to pay him anything out of my own pocket. He took a percentage of the money he negotiated for my settlement. (He said if he didn't get me any money, I wouldn't have had to pay him anything at all, even after all his work on my behalf.) I would recommend Robert to anyone with an estate matter, a will to draw up, or a personal injury matter. I would recommend consulting with him about any other kinds of cases too. If he can't help you, he'll recommend someone who can.

I was looking for a lawyer to help me with the sale of my first house. I did know where to go so I did an internet search and found Mr. Miller's web site. It was really informative, so I gave him a call. Mr. Miller was terrific and since that time he has been my whole family's attorney. When my wife was injured in a car accident, thank God he was there to help us; when my aunt died he got us through probate; when my son got divorced his firm made sure that things were settled in a fair and reasonable manner. In short, if you are looking for a true family law firm in the heart of Brooklyn, New York, you can ask for none better.

I was recommended to Mr. Miller by a friend when I had some trouble with the police a while back. The police had grabbed me off the street and arrested me for a crime I did not commit - and when I asked to speak to a lawyer - they beat me up so badly that I wound up in the hospital for two weeks. I cannot recommend anyone more highly than Mr. Miller as a top flight criminal and civil attorney. Not only did he prove my innocence, now we are negotiating a substantial civil settlement with the city for the injuries caused by the police. This is why I call Andrew Miller Brooklyn's Best.

I was filled with trust in Aziz Juraev and confidence in his professionalism from the very first consultation with him. This was the first lawyer, at the very first conversation with whom, I had a feeling of confidence in the outcome of the trial. And this despite the fact that he did not promise mountains of gold and did not persuade him to become his client. From the moment the contract was concluded until the judge made a decision, I never doubted my choice. Throughout my journey, Aziz and his team guided me in the best possible way. All documents were submitted on time. During consultations with Aziz and Alexander, I was able to imagine how the court hearing was going and how to behave at it, and I was able to believe that my case was not without hope for success. They instilled in me faith in the American justice system, which can accept even words without indisputable documentary evidence as an argument. All this is possible due to the fact that judges are people too and believe in humanity. At the trial itself, Aziz behaved like a true professional. I am very glad that I made the right choice by choosing Aziz Juraev as my lawyer. I am sincerely grateful to Aziz and his entire team.

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Brooklyn, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
