Top marks for Shari Jo. Her experience really helped me sleep at night as she guided me though this emotionally challenging and stressful situation. Her matter of fact style helped to quickly and efficiently draft the settlement. Great follow up to all of my inquiries throughout the process. When the process was stalled by the other side, she gave me great advice to get the process moving and ultimately bring closure to the process.

Shari Jo comes to the table with decades of experience in matrimonial law, yet pays attention to every detail of the new cases she takes on. This combination of experience and attention to detail is extremely effective. In my situation, she was informed, prepared and strategic in every step of a lengthy legal process. My advice would be trust her to do what she does best - handle matrimonial cases with expertise and conviction. She showed me that she genuinely believed in what is just and right, worked for just that and won.

Shari Jo did everything she was hired to do and more. She made it clear regarding what to expect and how to proceed. She was always available, was willing to listen to suggestions and modify strategy if it was going to improve the outcome. She was in charge so if you want to tell her what to do she is not for you. If you want to win, she is the one!

I cannot speak highly enough about Shari Jo Reich. She is the most professional, clever, honest lawyer you will ever meet. Her manner when I was going through one of the roughest times of my life was always calming, and her intense level of confidence most reassuring. My ex husband was going after everything I had worked so very hard for and it was promising to become a very ugly and drawn out battle. That was not the case in the end as Shari Jo had the most brilliant "chess move", that neither the opposing lawyer or my ex ever saw coming. They backed down from her clever use of the true facts and the end result was over swiftly and in a most favorable outcome for me and my assets. I always felt that she had my best interests at heart and never once did I feel like I was "billable hours", which my ex clearly was to his lawyer. She cared about me as a client who needed help. At our initial meeting I had brought a check with me ready to retain her services, (I was referred to her by 2 separate lawyer friends and was advised of her legendary reputation). She told me to read her contract before making any decisions, and yet still took the time to hear and have opinions about my situation upon meeting. Within a few minutes she sorted out some interesting possibilities for defense. I had called a few others prior to finding out about her and they all demanded a retainer upon meeting. Shari Jo's comment to me was that "she wanted to protect me" and that she did. If you want to be coddled and hand held with a shoulder to cry on she is not your lady, she is ALL business on your behalf. But if you want a fierce tiger who lies in wait for the right moment to strike to get you what you deserve she is the one for you.

This is my first time retaining an attorney. I did not know what to expect or how it would go but from the first conversation I had with him on the phone he calmed me down immediately and explained the law whenever I had a question and was extremely patient. One important thing I want to point out if you're shopping for an attorney is that Andrew answers the phone and responds if not immediately very soon and never leaves you hanging. He went above and beyond not just the facets of the case but also made sure that everything was good regarding my job. He took time to answer any questions I had and made sure I was satisfied. I was impressed with his calm demeanor and he fights till the very end and does not even waiver. I recommend him highly.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Buffalo, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
