Chris O’Brien (& his team) are incredibly honest people and tenacious lawyers. After working with him for ~2 years, I can confidently say they’re in this for the right reasons and you want them on your side. I was viciously attacked by a dog (leaving permanent scarring even through layers of clothing) — and the dog owners not only showed no regard for my injuries they tried every trick in the book to avoid taking any responsibility (including moving out of state after the bite was reported). Chris didn’t give up on fighting for me — and ultimately was kind enough to even waive his fees given the final settlement value. Chris truly cares about the well being of his clients, which is something you’ll need when you’re at your most vulnerable. He’s a straight shooter yet also very charismatic — I would recommend him to any of my friends & family.

Chris came highly recommended for a personal injury case from a number of people. He expressed concern for how I felt and helped me weed through referrals for doctors through my recovery. He was very patient with me and helped me understand the lengthy process of litigation. He clearly knew the ins and outs of the system and was thorough in his correspondence with me so I knew what was happening. Everyone in his office was professional and kind. I would recommend him to friends and family.

Let me start by saying that Chris and his Team are top notch professionals. While visiting the Buffalo Niagara area I was involved in a life altering accident. After hours of research I contacted and hired Chris. Chris and his Team kept me informed, were there when I needed them , and by far exceeded my expectations with a 7 figure settlement. If you find yourself in the unfortunate position of needing a personal injury attorney. Contact Chris. You will not regret it. One of the smartest decisions I have ever made was contacting The O'Brien Firm. RH Texas

Living in New York there are rules, regulations and realities which, when filing a personal injury lawsuit, you should be aware of. Some of these realities limit awards and most are not designed for the benefit of the plaintiff (that would be you if you initiated a personal injury lawsuit). It is my personal belief that the system favors the defendants and the defending insurance companies. The defending insurance companies have the job of saying no. The defending insurance company will delay, attack you, file senseless reasons for your injuries, etc.; all of which is designed to get you to give up or take whatever is offered. It is up to you, the plaintiff, to prove that you are injured and have suffered an economic loss. So, it was with great trepidation I stepped into the personal injury lawsuit world. I called one of the two big tv advertising personal injury firms. I went through two attorneys and the case languished. Since the lawsuit was filed, I needed to find someone else to be my champion. Interestingly enough several of my trusted friends mentioned The O'Brien Firm. I am glad they did and proud to say that Chris O'Brien was my attorney. If you are considering hiring an attorney to be your champion, do not hire Chris O'Brien if you do not want the truth. If you are looking for an attorney who will always tell you what you want to hear, go somewhere else. Chris is an anomaly in the world of personal injury attorneys, especially large case volume firms – He’s honest and forthright. He may tell you things you do not want to hear and there are going to be things you do not want to believe … but listen. He knows what he is talking about. He will explain everything. We enter the realm of personal injury lawsuits with dreams of millions of dollars dancing in our heads. Well achieving that may or may not be possible. Chris will tell you what you can expect; and it is an honest assessment based on your case and his years of experience. Chris has a “take no prisoners” approach when working for you. Chris is always thinking how best to counter act whatever the other side files or tries. He will line up the necessary documentation to counter. He will assemble the necessary expert doctors or other experts to counter. Each step in implementing his strategy is well thought out and expertly executed. While you may not understand why he is doing what he is doing – trust it. As I said, I do not trust the system. I do trust Chris O’Brien. I trust his knowledge, experience and brilliant strategic mind. The best part of working with Chris is that he does not give up until he gets the full extent of what you can be awarded.

In what seems like an unjust world, you would be hard pressed to find, or better yet, it would be impossible to find better representation on your road to justice than this firm offers. I am having a hard time figuring out how to put this into words. It isn’t that I can’t string sentences together; it’s that there is most likely a character limit on reviews and I could write a 50-page essay on how incredible my representation from this team of lawyers was for my case. I was injured nearly 4 years ago. A driver turned left in front of me while I had the right of way. I was on my 150cc scooter and was knocked from the bike. The insurance company claimed that their insured wasn’t at fault, offering measly settlement amounts. Chris and his team felt that these offers weren’t worthy of consideration and the case went to trial. I had respected John and Chris before seeing them on the battlefield, figuring they couldn’t rise any higher. I was sorely mistaken after seeing them work creatively and cohesively, catapulting us to a win with a jury verdict. It was strange to be asked to put a price on pain and suffering. It is something that I hope I never have to do again. However, Chris and John were there every single step of the way to recovery both physically and monetarily. They were thrown some wicked knuckleballs during pre-trial, jury selection and trial and handled them all with ease, exceeding expectations. I wish there were a review like this when I obsessively Google searched every aspect of personal injury, eventually finding Chris. You are going to be scared, maybe doubt your own injuries and feel pretty low at points. It was one of the saddest times in my life. I couldn’t have made it through without the support I received from Chris, John and Sid. I am indebted to this amazing group of people forever and wish them and their families the best. They kept telling me it was a pleasure to work with me and I am truly honored and humbled that this excellent group of people would think so highly of me. I truly see them as heroes. Thank you to everyone at the O’Brien firm, especially Patrice, who always welcomed me warmly and asked about my kids.

This is my first time retaining an attorney. I did not know what to expect or how it would go but from the first conversation I had with him on the phone he calmed me down immediately and explained the law whenever I had a question and was extremely patient. One important thing I want to point out if you're shopping for an attorney is that Andrew answers the phone and responds if not immediately very soon and never leaves you hanging. He went above and beyond not just the facets of the case but also made sure that everything was good regarding my job. He took time to answer any questions I had and made sure I was satisfied. I was impressed with his calm demeanor and he fights till the very end and does not even waiver. I recommend him highly.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Buffalo, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
