I cannot give enough praise to Jean and her entire staff. They are the kindest people. Jean and her team make you feel very comfortable from your initial meeting right until the end of the process. Jean has delivered for me many times. I would not hesitate to tell anyone and everyone if you are going through the divorce process, this is the office to call immediately.

I could not have had greater representation than I got from Ashley Mahserjian. Because of her, I am able to have my daughter every week. I would highly recommend this lawfirm to ANYONE who is going through a rough custody battle.

Pros
1
Highly skilled and efficient lawyer who can quickly resolve issues
“Jennifer was who she said I needed with all the investigating she did . She was right with just one appearance on my behalf was able to balance out the indifference and clear up the issues I was having not being represented accordingly by a well qualified attorney.”
2
Highly professional and well-prepared in and out of the courtroom
“Jen has been my attorney since the start of what was without the most traumatic and difficult thing that I have ever experianced. Throughout the entirety of it she has always been extremely professional both in and outside the courtroom.”
3
Excellent negotiation skills and ability to achieve favorable outcomes
“Jen stuck with me through thick and thin in a MISERABLE custody battle (is there any other kind??) spanning years and litigation in at least 3 different counties, dealing with uncaring Law Guardians and bizarre and ill conceived decisions from the Court. In each instance, she was well prepared for Court and was excellent in Motion Practice, ultimately winning several key points.”
4
Thorough, practical, and punctual in her work
“Mrs. Sunderlin has exceeded my expectations. Mrs. Sunderlin is an excellent attorney who prides herself on being thorough, practical and punctual.”
5
Compassionate and dedicated to client needs
“Jen was super thorough in explaining the options and procedure for something that clearly I didn't deal with everyday. Her professionalism made what could seemily be a painful experience go as smooth as possible.”
Cons
1
Lack of communication and responsiveness from the attorney
“One of the things I wrote in the letter to say why I was displeased was the complete lack of communication. She told me that that's how she helps save money for people like me (to fail to communicate). She DID have the time to write her full explanation to my complaints, but not the time to make a strategy.”
2
Unwillingness to take on certain cases or work diligently on them
“If this lawyer doesn't like your case up front, do NOT stick with her. But....given the lack of communication, just...don't do it... A one-word yes or no follow-up via phone or email could have be responsible ***and respectful** legal use of time and money. If you don't have money, she doesn't do it.”
3
Rude and disrespectful communication
“Not only did she not believe in the validity of my case, she was rude in communication from the get-go. I was assigned this lawyer from the firm because she would be the 'cheapest'. She certainly cost me more of my health, and lost me faith in humans--the consistent disrespect was exhausting.”
4
Billing for basic communication and complaint handling
“I would actually like to talk to the Better Business Bureau to find out if it is ethical to charge a client for writing *to* the lawyer a letter of complaint, and getting billed for reading that letter and for writing a response.”

I cannot express enough, my gratitude to Vida McCarthy-Cerrito. She took on my mess of a divorce/family law case when so many others had turned me away. Vida is not afraid of a challenge, and in fact, got right to work at our very first meeting. EFFICIENT and RESPONSIVE. She addressed each issue the moment it crossed her desk. She kept in contact with me every step of the way; I never felt alone or unprotected. She answered my questions, returned my phone calls, responded to every email. She always kept me informed, advising me what she was planning to do & what to expect next. Most importantly to me, Vida was HUMAN; she understood this was the most difficult time of my family's life. She held herself accountable to me & my needs and held me accountable for my required actions. She turned my case around and restored my life. THANK YOU, VIDA!!

We retained Katrin to obtain Grandparent's visitation rights to our grandchildren. Katrin first outlined a course of action to avoid going to court if possible. When that failed, she advised us as to the best way to be successful, with realistic expectations. The was empathetic to our situation and kept us appraised of the progress or lack thereof. She also was good at working with the opposing attorney, reaching a good compromise with the parent we were having difficulty with. While always professional, she also was very understanding and helpful in her dealings with my wife and me. She also sent us regular statements so we knew exactly where we stood financially.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Clifton Park, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
