Ana guided me through the process of forming my own company in New York State. In addition to preparing and filing the legal documents, Ana also took the time to explain related requirements, such as publication and obtaining an EIN. She explained the importance of establishing proper business operations, such as a separate bank account, insurance and certain accounting-related matters. Ana and the Wagoner Firm stepped in to help me with a breach of contract matter. She met with us and reviewed the contract and helped us gather all the evidence we needed to show that this commercial installer was in breach. She spoke with the company's attorney for several months and kept pushing for a fair result, when at first the company denied everything. Ultimately, we get the result we needed and then some. The full purchase price of our contract and and additional sum to get the required permits for the work we were having done.

I am a Veteran who was referred to The Wagoner Firm via the SBA/VBOC because of the firm's support of Veteran Small Business owners. I had the opportunity to work with Ana Galeano in a recent commercial real estate transaction in excess of $1 million. I was purchasing a major property in Schenectady, NY and needed an attorney with experience in real estate. Ana provided me with an opportunity to speak with her extensively at no charge to discuss questions and issues prior to my decision to retain The Wagoner Firm to represent me. One of my biggest concerns was the timeliness that was required due to tax incentive deadlines. Ana and her associates worked feverishly to meet the closing deadline. Many individuals at the closing table commented to me about how it was the quickest commercial transaction they had been a part of. This was even more impressive when you consider the uniqueness of the closing and several unpredictable complications that arose during the closing process. The transaction involved tax issues and a transfer of agreements with the local metroplex authority. Throughout the deal, Ana was very responsive and always made herself available through the critical period of negotiating contracts and closing the deal. In fact, she was available on weekends (without charging extra) and went above and beyond on many occasions to ensure the deal closed by the tax deadline. It involved a large number of parties (buyer, seller, tenant, bank, lender's counsel, brokers, agents), and Ana was very effective in communicating with all parties, including the attorney for the local authority. In addition, Ana has been responsive and available for post-closing matters, such as obtaining appropriate insurance, providing property management contracts, and guiding me through general issues with the property. I would not hesitate to recommend Ana Galeano and The Wagoner Firm to anyone who needs competent, trustworthy, and responsive legal counsel or representation.

Ana and The Wagoner Firm represented my partner and I in connection with the acquisition of a business in New York State. She formed a new company for us, counseled us in connection with our Operating Agreement, and prepared all the legal documents for the acquisition. My partner and I are located in 2 different states outside of NY, yet Ana was able to ensure constant and consistent communication. We appreciated that Ana and her team were incredibly responsive and were always available (evenings and weekends) to answer our questions and guide us through every step of the transaction - from establishing bank accounts, addressing New York State agency requests, and ensuring the appropriate transfer of funds. I highly recommend Ana and The Wagoner Firm.

She was amazingly helpful and empathetic and compassionate to my situation. I had an attorney prior to her who didn't do a darn thing for me for well over a year, but Jean got right on my case and kept it moving along. Her staff is so very helpful as well. I highly recommend Jean.

Jean represented me during my divorce proceedings for a little over a year until an agreement was made. We were able to come to an agreement and settle out of court and mostly stay out of the court house. I felt represented very well and have the utmost confidence in Jean's legal prowess. Jean and her law office were always very easy to contact, I had no trouble getting ahold of someone if I had questions or updates for them. Jean and all her staff were very friendly and welcoming. I had as great an experience as one could have while going through the divorce process. Jean is an excellent lawyer and I would recommend her to anyone needing representation during divorce or custody battles.

I just wrapped up a divorce with her as my lawyer. She always answered my questions in a timely manner and handled all of the paperwork and filings. She gave good advice with a helpful amount of details and background to explain her position, and was understanding and flexible when I wanted to handle things differently. I had a positive experience using her services and recommend her.

Laura is very professional and patient in explaining what I could expect as I entered getting a divorce. She was very responsive in answering my questions and returning calls/emails. Her calm mannerisms kept the focus on the matter at hand and limited the emotional aspect of the process. I would highly recommend her to navigate through the difficult waters of getting a divorce.

My biggest mistake with my divorce was in using a mediator at first and not engaging Laura completely and fully from the beginning. When custody and other issues came up, Laura was able to help me achieve pretty much every goal I set out to accomplish. My case and custody faced some non-standard issues and Laura did extra research to help me understand how this would affect my case and what was actionable and what was not. She provided me detailed analysis and sound legal advice. Her communication is timely, accurate, complete, and comprehensive. I could not be happier with the service I have received.

My husband and I were referred to Tom Kernan by our financial planner, and found him knowledgeable, patient and responsive to our questions, and easy to talk to regarding sensitive topics. Mr. Kernan took the time to listen to our needs and unique situations and create just the necessary documents. We truly appreciated that. No questions were considered minor, and he explained things in lay language so it was clear.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Clifton Park, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
