Inferiority complex? When she introduced herself to me, she mentioned that she thought I had some pre-formed opinion of her that she was a young girl, incapable to represent me properly. I assure you, i had no pre-conceived notions. She did however prove to be the wrong representation for me. If you are not female, do not hire. Christine Verbitsky represented me in a case involving my ex-wife, where I had been overpaying child support for years. She sat down to negotiate with my ex and after some girlish giggling came back to tell me how many thousands i needed to produce that very day or face incarceration. This from the person who was to protect me. I am still traumatized years later. Just to give perspective, I now have full custody, but my ex still owes me over 30K. This is where Miss Verbitsky has left me. She shamelessly threw me under the bus basically extorting thousands of dollars from her own client, under threat of incarceration. She actually was the only one to ever mention incarceration to me and she warned me it was imminent. I left this attorney review on AVVO, and she immediately emailed me, threatening me with libel or some nonsensical legal action. Please. Sue me, I will counter-sue for the 7 thousand you made me borrow to, "stay out of jail." Should never have happened. I blame my representation entirely for the outcome. Again, look at her reviews, all women Have a nice day.

I have been a client of AnneMarie Lanni for some time now. She has been helping me work through many serious issues revolving around custody of my daughter. From day one, she has always been open, truthful, and communicative with me. I never once felt like she did not care or didn't have the time for my case. Communication has never been an issue. Whenever I needed to speak to her, she has always reached out to me if it was through the firm's portal, email, or by phone. She is extremely friendly and warm, which makes it so much easier to work with her. But do not let her friendly demeanor fool you. When it comes to presenting in court, she is a straight shooter and isn't easy to rattle. She is not the one to be pushed around and has always been on top of her game. She makes it known that my child and my concerns are her top priority. I have always felt comfortable entering a courtroom because of her. She comes prepared. She is very knowledgeable of family law, and it truly shows when she is standing in front of the judge while representing her client. She is fantastic, and I can not thank her enough for being in my corner during a very difficult time in my life. I would like to add that the office staff at the firm are all top notch. Any time I have had any interaction with the paralegals or secretaries in the office, it has always been a pleasant experience. They are helpful and kind. Again, I highly recommend this law firm for all family law issues, especially AnneMarie.

Pros
1
Highly knowledgeable and experienced attorneys who provide excellent legal representation
“Robert and Christine are the epitome of professionalism. They helped us with the purchase of our new home. They were efficient, dedicated, and focused on making our closing as seamless as possible.”
2
Responsive and communicative throughout the legal process
“From the minute my now x-husband and I met with Robert, we both felt comfortable and confident that he and his firm were a great fit for our "gray divorce". Divorce is unsettling but the firm and the confidence, consideration and responsiveness made this very challenging time much easier to navigate.”
3
Compassionate and understanding of clients' emotional needs during difficult times
“At arguably the most difficult time in my life, Christine helped me cope with my situation and gave me a solid basis for hope going forward. She got to know me. She understood what I wanted and helped me understand my legal options.”
4
Effective in negotiating and achieving favorable outcomes for clients
“Rob and his team are by far one of the greatest! Patty is amazing and will make sure all of your questions are addressed and responded to. Rob and his team made a very tough time in my life as simple as possible.”
5
Highly recommended by both clients and other legal professionals
“I am a paralegal in an unrelated field of law. I phoned Hornberger Verbitsky, P.C. today intending to refer a client to their office. Instead (and despite that we are in the midst of the present crisis), Mr. Hornberger himself graciously accommodated my questions over the telephone, and was generous with his time and adroit in his response, saving our client a small fortune in unnecessary legal fees.”
Cons
1
Some clients had negative experiences with specific attorneys at the firm
“Christine Verbitsky was an absolute godsend. At arguably the most difficult time in my life, Christine helped me cope with my situation and gave me a solid basis for hope going forward. She got to know me. She understood what I wanted and helped me understand my legal options.”
2
A few clients felt that the firm did not always act in their best interests
“If I can leave a no star I would. My experience with this firm is the worst. They take your money and don't represent your best interest. I spent over 20 thousand to represent me for a family case where my rights was violated, but because I'm a male the laws does not apply the same.”

At this time, I am a current client of this law firm. I hired Ron in the darkest time of my life. My soon to be ex husband was upset because I filed for divorce. Furthermore, my estranged husband has attempted to destroy my professional license and reputation. Within a couple of months, Ron and his team were able to rectify that. We are just getting through the divorce. Ron is a brilliant, calm attorney. He knows the law well and is well respected by the court. I strongly recommend him for any of your legal needs. You definitely want him on your side. He is an expert negotiator who has a keen attention to detail but appropriately balances that with the big picture. He is guiding me through the entire process in a highly effective manner. He operates with compassion and provides a realistic assessment of where you stand, which I need. He always is responsive and both he and his team are quick to answer questions/calls and turn things around.

I used Mr. Zimmer for my divorce case. I’m glad that I did, he fought for me every step of the way. I’ve never had someone fight so hard for me before and speak up for me with such passion and conviction. This attorney is hands on, I don’t think there was one aspect of my case that Mr. Zimmer didn’t oversee personally. A true class act and professional. I’m more than satisfied, I wouldn’t hesitate for a minute to use Mr. Zimmer again for any legal matter. Top notch law firm!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Commack, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
