Recently, my family had to retain Mr. Mohun to represent my Son on a felony criminal charge in which my Son was innocent. Not an easy job when everyone had my Son convicted before the ink on the ticket was dry. Thanks to Mr. Mohun's legal knowledge and quick action, we got the news two days ago that all of the charges against my Son have been dropped and charges filed against the "real criminal". On top of Mr. Mohun's knowledge and skills as a remarkable criminal defense attorney, he is a compassionate and caring man. He put my family's hearts and minds at peace through this entire process. We knew we were in great hands. We cannot thank him enough!

Mike and his team were an absolute pleasure to work with during my difficult times. Everything was explained thoroughly to me every step of the way which gave me piece of mind that otherwise I would not have had all the way from the consultation to the end result. I couldn't be happier with my decision to work with Mike and would strongly recommend him to anyone seeking legal assistance. In my case, it was the work that Mike did on his own time that really helped us get the results we wanted in court, filing motions, scheduling appointments, sending me copies of all available information etc. Mike made sure that my family and I were comfortable and informed and receiving all of the right opportunities that we could along the way. Mike and his team are TOP NOTCH professionals, if ever I had a question or uncertainty a quick phone call to the office gave me all the insight I needed to relax and feel confident. Worth every penny and then some! Thanks Mike!

Michael Mohun is not only a great attorney but an extremely kind man. I am 23 living on my own away from my family and with absolutely no help financially. I work full time and have been trying for years to repair my horrible driving record. Of course to do that requires payment of fines and fees which I have to work to pay for so it's almost impossible to not drive. As soon as I would get close to regaining my licence I would slip up and get slapped with a whole bunch of tickets thus starting over again. I was charged with aggravated unlicensed operator in the second degree (AUO 2nd) and a speeding ticket and was denied a puplic defender because my income is too high (apparently they don't take into consideration expenses other than the extremely bare basics). I googled attourneys in the area and called the first one I saw which happened to be mr. Mohun and i told him my story. He understood my situation and offered to take my case with no charge. We spoke a few times on the phone and he was very nice and didn't seem any less helpful because he was taking my case for free. We met at court where the DA originally wanted 30 days in jail for the AUO 2nd and the speeding reduced to illegal parking with fines for both but mike got it reduced to a non misdemeanor driving with out a licence and illegal parking with my fines only totalling something like $425. I am now waiting to see if I'm approved to get my licence back and I owe it all to mike! Sometimes it just takes one person to cut you a break for things to start getting better.

Did a great job continuing to work on getting my sentence reduced between my original guilty plea and sentencing. Has excellent understanding of my jurisdiction's court process. Bottom line, he kept working on my behalf until the very last day. Great result.

I hold Attorney Michael Mohun at high esteem and regard. My story and case were unique in nature; circumstances that only Mr. Mohun could handle. His expertise in criminal law, specifically DWI practice, is unmatched. The moment I walked into Mike's office, I knew I found the right guy to defend me. He treated me with kindness and welcomed me with open arms. He fearlessly defended me like I was his own son. Mr.Mohun went to war for me and due to his unabashed efforts, the entirety of my case was dismissed and the charges were dropped. I cannot thank Mike enough and nothing gives me more satisfaction than to write this review and recommend Mike Mohun to any and all of my friends should they find themselves in a bind. Thanks again Mike!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Cowlesville, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
