As a physician, I was hesitant to sue another healthcare worker for malpractice. However, when my father was mistreated at a nursing home, my hesitation evaporated. I hired Roman to represent my family, and fight for my father’s legacy, to sue for neglect and abuse my father endured. I was impressedwith Roman’s insight and experience when it came to nursing practice and protocols. He knew everything there is to know about bedsores and falls in nursing home. I definitely recommend him.

Like many everyday people, I never believed that my life could be interrupted by an act of carelessness on the part of someone else. When I was injured in a car accident, the young kid who hit me was remorseful and I did not want to cause him anymore trouble after he destroyed his and my cars. After all, that is what we have insurance for. After about a week my lower back pain and shoulder pain would not go away. I still thought it is not serious, and I am young and healthy. It too shall pass. Unfortunately, what I did not anticipate was the conduct of my insurance company and that of the other driver. I was hounded by relentless calls of the adjusters, who called me more frequently than telemarketers. On one end, they offer me $500 for “my troubles” as long as I do not seek attorney representation. On the other end, both insurance companies refused to pay for the rather significant property damage to my car. Although the other driver admitted fault to the police officer, and it was documented in the report, his company told me for weeks that they cannot repair my vehicle until they speak to their driver. My insurance company simply told it is not your fault, the other company should pay. Weeks after the accident, I was in greater pain, frustrated, and owing over $1,500 for towing and storage fees, I simply gave up. I could not return to work, and even I could, I had no way of getting there. Enter Roman Shakh. Within 24 hours the vehicle was removed to a different facility, inspected, and repairs were scheduled. I was in a rental. I was getting medical treatment I needed. When I told Roman I did not want to pursue a personal injury case against the other driver, and I offered to pay for Roman’s time, he simply refused. He assured me that it was my choice and he would continue to help me until the process over. After I insisted on paying him, he told me to pick my favorite charity and send them the check. (There are now two dogs out there, who were saved and found a new home -Thank you ASPCA). Ultimately, after year of treatment, I had to have surgery for the injury I sustained in this accident. I called Roman back and told him reluctantly that maybe we should revisit the idea of filing a case. I was out of work and bills were piling up. Roman explained the process (actually a few times, as I am big on asking questions). He was unbelievably accessible and responsive. I had his cell number and I would communicate with him constantly. He always wanted to know how I was doing. Any issue with medical treatment, reimbursements, unpaid medical bills, Roman was happy to help. I soon realized that he went out of his way not to make promises when I asked him questions about how long the process takes or what are chances of success. As much as I then needed to know this, I am very glad I was not simply told what I wanted to hear. This was a true sign of professional relationship-building based on integrity and credibility. I would not have trusted Roman had he simply sought to placate me. My trust paid off. After two years following the accident, my case settled. It did not settle on the terms of the insurance company, which minimized my injuries. As much as I wish I did not have to go through this process, and as much as I would give it all back in exchange for not being involved in the accident, I am pleased with the outcome. I am pleased for having met Roman, and I now consider him my friend. It’s the experiences like these, as unpleasant as they may initially appear, that give a new perspective on life and those in it. I cannot give a greater endorsement for Roman and his team. Although in all fairness this was my first experience, and I have little to compare it to, I am certain that most lawyers will not be this committed and involved as Roman was.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of East Meadow, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
