Over the years I have worked with a variety of attorneys from large well-known firms to individual practitioners. My requirements included guidance on personal finance, labor relations, property acquisition, human resources, construction, and broadcasting. I have hired attorney Cynthia Diaz twice to advise me on personal matters and can say without equivocation, she delivered the most effective service of them all. I would gladly recommend her to anyone.

Cynthia Diaz is an exemplary attorney. It is for this reason that I have hired her services on more than one occasion to successfully resolve my legal issues. Cynthia’s legal representation is not only of the highest caliber, but as her client she has made me feel comfortable throughout my situations that required her expertise. Most importantly, she cared which made me feel even more at ease. As an attorney Cynthia is attentive, thorough, knowledgeable, straightforward, personable, endearing, and has a tireless work ethic. Cynthia would doggedly work on my cases which was evidenced by all of the prepared documents she’d either written or responded to on my behalf that I’d have to read and or sign. Her legal mind is brilliant and strategic as her subsequent legal advice/consultations have never failed me. I have found Cynthia to be relentless in her pursuit of justice as it has pertatained to me (her client) and I would hire her again in a heartbeat.

Mr. DeVito is a wonderful attorney. He walked me through everything in a prep session prior to my EBT. On the day of the EBT I was not nervous because he went over all of the questions I would be asked. He did an amazing job ask and was very knowledgeable.

I have been working with Mr. DeVito for about 2 1/2 years now and he has handled my personal injury case better than 2 of my previous attorneys. He also kept me informed and I got amazing results. He was also punctual and always returned phone calls and never rushed you off the phone.

He handled a deposition for me and walked me through it during a prep session. When the deposition started I was very aware of all the types of questions I was going to be asked. When the trial came he was very thorough and up on his game when defending this matter before the jury. Needless to say he achieved a victory for me. Thanks again. Definitely need to hire this talented attorney. He does not sugar coat anything and is very upfront with what you should expect.

I’ve read the response Annabel or whomever had made. I gave a 1 star due to me and my moms feeling of being defrauded to gain money from a property you didn’t have the right to take money from and only until you forced me to move by selling the property because you didn’t confront the signers of your contract you made from the breadwinner who had control of the assets in question before calling me and offering to buy a property for me and put the deed without any cash on hand into a irrevocable trust. He then put my mom through hell. And has since left the family and his responsibilities. You then changed the premise by forcing a sale instead of making sure the grantors paid their property tax as per NY state law. i was left completely blindsided by the rules and did not know enough then to make a good judgement nor should i have been put in that position. Now that property has since doubled in value, and i have moved to a place comfortable for me with money that belonged to me to repurchase another property which now i own and have the deed to. I was not responsible to pay the property taxes on the irrevocable trust. I feel completely taken advantage of and robbed a large portion of my inheritance. Even tho I thanked you when i didn’t know what was going on at the time…i the beneficiary paid you from my inheritance money when i didn’t make any contracts or agreements with you i am simply the beneficiary. I now fully own my property here in maine i was dragged all over creation and stolen from from you collecting your fees from the trust verses peter cannova. I feel it is your duty to confront peter and be refunded the money due to me that belongs to me.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Elmont, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
