I tried getting in touch with my attorney multiple times, they never call back. I've been switched between 4 lawyers in 7 months and when something important happens they need to learn my case. I called to speak to a manager and she was REALLY rude, acting like I should thank her for getting me information I should have had a month ago, as stated in a letter that she kept denying to be true. If an owner or one of the main partners can get in touch, give me a call, same email as the one I used for your firm, you should be able to find my number. Otherwise I'm putting in a formal complaint in a 2 page letter I recieved from the complaint department. I'll give it til friday before I fill it out. I hope someone finally does the right thing and can acknowledge that I shouldn't have been called 20 minutes before my case to be introduced to the lawyer who would be representing me that I never spoke to before. Nothing has been smooth, ESPECIALLY getting a call back in the same week, none the less, it usually takes 2 weeks to get in contact and it's because I called back. I either want a solid lawyer from your firm that I speak to and they represent me, or i want you removed without pay. I'm hoping it's a specific lawyer who will be in touch, and if so, I'll remove this review. If not, on Friday I'm filing the formal complaint against the office. Edit: in response to your reply, because i cant find the reply button for whatever reason. If I call because I have a question, and 9/10 times I dont even get a cal back, then you're just flat out disrespectful and ok with it? because I have called and get no response. Ive had 4 different paralegals saying they were the new paralegal, and on my november hearing, i got a call 20 minutes from the hearing by the lawyer representing me, was not who i was told was supposed to represent me, and asked me for a run down on thr case 20 minutes before we were on call with the judge. Really unprofesssional, and your response, talking about my case and specific things, will be added to the call from the bar association. It's nobody's business what kind of case with you, thats part of attorney client privelage. I took a snapshot, so dont worry about deleting it

Top review highlights

Pros
1
Highly knowledgeable and experienced attorneys who are dedicated to their clients
“Bruce Barket saved my life for me and my four children. For 15 years my children and I were abused at the hands of NYSP Troop C & Tioga County DA's office. After being convicted twice and spending over 4 years in prison I found Bruce Barket after months of searching in the NYC area. Bruce did everything I asked of him and more. He was fair, honest, sincere, compassionate, and most important dedicated.”
2
Aggressive and skilled representation in the courtroom
“In court he showed an ability to argue brilliantly and think quickly on his feet; out of court he proved to be almost incredibly persuasive, dramatically changing the stance of determined adversaries time and again.”
3
Personalized attention and support for clients
“Bruce was especially helpful shepherding me through many dark days.”
4
Successful outcomes and case dismissals
“Thanks to him, the worst experience of my life had a happy ending.”
5
Strong reputation and respect among peers
“The skill and diligence with which Bruce handled my case was overshadowed only by the compassion and support Bruce showed me as a human being over the course of four difficult years.”
Cons
1
Lack of communication and responsiveness from attorneys
“I was charged with a DWI and was facing very harsh penalties. Scott was highly recommended by a friend. We went over the case details together and explored every different way we could handle the case. He listened carefully to what I wanted and we decided to take the case to trial. Throughout my ordeal he was very professional, always reachable, and he truly cared about my wellbeing.”
2
Excessive and unjustified legal fees
“Charging $250 for a consultation and 5,000 upon hire I was told. They had no curiousity concern or interest in my case didn't even ask what help or area of concern I was contacting them about. This is not a service. These people do not have any concern or care for a potential client.”
3
Attorneys prioritizing their own interests over clients
“Barket brought in Kevin Kearon to prepare me for testimony. Kearon had stolen money from a different case years earlier, and I had met him in the courthouse one day and screamed at him what a scumbag he was. So, Barket brings him in to see me, and Kearon tells me he is not there for me, but at Barket's request.”
4
Lack of expertise and poor case management
“My case was so difficult that Steven was realistic with me and explained that if the verdict was not guilty on the first three and then guilty on the last it would still be considered a win.”
5
Dishonest and unethical practices
“Barket wouldn't advocate for me when I needed health care for a ruptured achilles and cancerous growth on my finger, and actually requested to the AUSA and jail that they put me in isolation for suicide watch. He extorted me into agreeing to a plea in which the Government was free to argue for higher prison time anyway.”

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

  10. Are there alternative ways to resolve my legal issue?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Garden City, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
