Joel has represented me in my divorce . There is no other attorney that will invest time, effort, the representation , knowledge , and advice.. I never felt like just another client . My divorce took years and I experienced many court appearances and witnessed how many attorneys work and represent their clients and I knew immediately I was in the best of hands and Joel made sure that the best interest of me and my children was his number one priority and my divorce ended in my favor because of Joel.

Sunshine & Feinstein consists of an amazing team of intelligent, hardworking, and honest attorneys who take pride in their work and strive to get the best outcome for their client! From the moment I met Joel Sunshine, Janet R. Faber, and Brian Feinstein, I knew my case was in the best hands! From the start, they explained how the process works and prepared me for what I could expect. I was truly fortunate and proud to have Joel Sunshine as my talented and experienced litigator! Joel is a highly intelligent attorney and has a gift of being able to think quickly, outside the box and argue a case extremely well! I was impressed by Joel’s knowledge and how he was determined to get me the positive outcome I wanted! Janet is a highly intelligent and talented matrimonial attorney who has an exceptional memory and knew my case inside out! I cannot thank Janet enough for her determination and dedication on my case, in addition to going beyond the call of duty and genuinely caring about my wellbeing. Janet should be extremely proud of her work and the positive difference she has made in my life! I also thank Brian Feinstein who is a highly intelligent attorney, for all the valuable input he contributed to my case! I could not have wished for a better team of professionals, and I highly recommend Joel, Janet, and Brian for any type of matrimonial representation.

Hiring Joel Sunshine took away the worry and fear. From the moment I met with Joel and his team I knew I was in good hands with my Separation case. The intefgrity came through when he spoke and this was of the utmost importance to me. I did not want someone representing me who was going to spin lies. And this is what came through with my husbands lawyer-they lied and made up stories from the beginning. During deposition Joel was so smooth as extremely caring and courteous to my husband. Afterwards my husband remarked what a good guy Joel was and he even said he would recommend him to friends! (He switched attorneys a couple times during our separation). From the beginning Joel told me exactly how things were going to go including what the costs and outcomes and even timelines would be. He was right on the money with all these accounts. I have already recommended him and Stacy-his wife out to several friends and will continue to do so.

Joel Sunshine is an incredibly intelligent, hardworking, ethical, honest attorney. He is also a rare find in lawyers these days because he actually cares about his client and fought for me with passion and heart. He is an awesome litigator who is articulate, can think on his feet, prepares tirelessly and knows how to argue a case. He makes a great team with his wife Stacey, who does a lot of the paperwork while he acts like Perry Mason in court! I cannot thank Joel enough and am so appreciative that I found him. I went back to family court after my ex-husband refused to pay for college, unreembursed medical expenses and then child support after he opened his own financial services company so Suffolk County Child Support Enforcement Bureau couldn't garnish his wages anymore. My case was moved to Supreme Court and I became very frustrated with my first attorney and being tossed from Judge to Judge there. No one seemed to care that this deadbeat dad was not being held responsible for anything. I found Joel and he became my Knight in Shining Armor, fighting for justice in an awful system that seriously needs an overhaul. After almost six years of litigation because my ex counter sued me and tried to bankrupt me so that I would quit, Joel fought diligently during a ten day trial over the course of three months and was simply brilliant! Finally, justice was served. My ex was sentenced to jail to be stayed by finally paying the back child support, college expenses plus interest, unreembursed medical expenses and even $114,000 towards my lawyers fees!!! If you are looked for a team of fair, equitable, caring, honest, diligent, responsive, brilliant, personable attorneys then Joel and Stacey are for you. I cannot thank them enough and love them for what they were able to accomplish for me and my children!

Joel Sunshine is an extraordinary matrimonial attorney!! He is very knowledgeable in his field and a very well spoken man. If it weren't for his expertise and his knowledge of the court system my divorce would have been a total nightmare. I highly recommend him to any one that is in need of a divorce attorney. Joel always took the time to address my concerns and made himself accessible to me. I must say that I am very pleased with the outcome of my divorce process and more importantly in matters where my children are concern. Joel's work ethics have my sincere respect and admiration. In preparing any documentation for other attorneys and/or the courts he was steadfast in being clear, honest, and open-minded. For me he was a true partner that walked along side and guided me through a difficult time. I couldn't have asked for a better advocate.

Steven and his team were extremely responsive to my questions and concerns. There was not a time that Steven did not respond to any of my questions the same day. It took 18 months for my case to be settled and he kept in the loop the entire time. If it wasn’t for Steven’s kindness, I don’t think I could have done it.

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Garden City, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
