I hired Mr Meyers as my divorce lawyer and during that time and process I was completely blown away at how confident and reassuring he was through the entire situation. If you're looking for an individual who will stand up in court and go for the throat when needed he's your man. The key to any good divorce attorney seems to be the advice and if you actually listen to his advice you will have no issues in the court. I read these other reviews and every case was for anything but divorce if you look at his experience he has over 30 years, 30 years plus in divorce law. Therefore don't waste your time using Mr Meyers as a criminal lawyer but if you want a damn good divorce lawyer he's the man for you.

In a bad position of my life I thought I was about to lose everything to my soon to be ex wife. When I was able to set up a consultation with Mr. Meyer From start to finish I was able to feel safe secure and confident of a fair outcome for my divorce, I highly recommend him.

I checked this site prior to hiring Meyer, thought it was entirely possible to have one bad review and that this was probably the exception and not the norm. Unfortunately, I found this not to be the case. Meyer treated me as described in the prior review. He was consistently profane and unprofessional. When I complained about his behavior he told me not to take it personally as he treats everyone like that. He was untimely with written communications, blaming it on his secretary. He did not notify me for 1 1/2 months that the sale of my house had gone through and he had 10's of thousands of dollars of my money. He seems unable or unwilling to do math, which is often important in a divorce proceeding, and accepts opposing counsels math which, as you can imagine, can result in paying too much or for too long. When I asked him about an instance of this he told me I can take part of it off my income tax. In a nutshell, the experience I had seems to be the norm and not the exception .

I hired him in a grand larceny case against me. He was aggressive towards me. He would forget everything I told him, even when he wrote it down, obviously he didn't ever review or try to understand my case. He never ever answered my direct questions without yelling at me. Furthermore, he never missed a chance to interject into conversations with me "you wouldn't be in this situation if you didn't do what you did". I believe I already had a clear understanding of that fact, Captain Obvious Attorney! On several occasions over a four week period he mostly was screaming at me to get more money, which I had no access to anywhere. He said, "you are going to do more prison time if you don't come up with more money". He also suggested, I max out my credit cards, getting money off them and then file bankruptcy after I do that. I fully now believe justice is not blind, because if I had more money I would be treated less harshly and I now know it is okay to commit fraud with your creditors to pay my victim. Mind you my victim is committing insurance fraud by overstating their losses by a lot of money (I provided proof of this, and every time I mentioned that to him, he states we need to hold our cards close to our vest). I was and still feel scared, alone, and unrepresented. I have never been through this process before, and I know I never will be through it again. Please, please stay away from this guy, he is not a good attorney!

Very agressive behavior toward me as his client. Would not answer direct questions and belittled me for trying to understand the process. I never felt respected by this man, yet he took my money just the same. He may have known the business side but was unwilling to share what I thought I needed to know.

If you happen to find yourself in a situation where you need a public defender in Livingston County; Samantha Maguire is, hands down, the solution to your problems. She is highly educated and the very best at her job, and, by far, surpasses her calls of duty! She stays on top of things, and walks you through whatever it is you have to go through, every step of the way, so that you are not walking into anything blindly, nor are you doing anything alone. She will do whatever it takes to get you the most favorable outcome possible. To top it off, she’s an amazing woman that genuinely cares about her clients, and proves that in her actions. She will go to bat and fight your fight for you! If I was in a position where I had to personally pay for an attorney, I would choose her, every time! She is so much more than an attorney, but if that’s what you’re needing, look no further.

I most highly recommend Dave Hoffmann to anyone who wants to understand what they are going through and how their decision will impact the rest of their lives. Dave explained to me that he has worked as a prosecuting attorney before and understands what "both sides" are looking for in a resolution. Dave is personable, kind, and drew from his experiences as both a prosecution and defense attorney to explain all possible avenues of resolving my speeding ticket before I made a decision. Because of this, I was able to make a well-informed choice that resulted in what I feel was the most favorable resolution possible for my case.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Geneseo, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
