Mr. McElwee represented me on behalf of the state in a case where I was assaulted and almost killed in a bar. Before Mr. McElwee had the cased dismissed without my knowledge there was a very capable attorney handling my situation and was extremely confident we would do well with a jury. For no apparent or explained reason McElwee pulled the attorney I was working with for a year and half and assigned a freshman ADA. She knew little about the case and when she tried to explain it to me she had the time line of events completely wrong. There was supposed to be one more hearing before court and McElwee who supervised this new attorney went into court with minimal understanding of my case. (He never spoke to me). Then he agreed with defense to drop the case. I would have never found out if 3 days later I called the court and asked when my next court date was! He was poorly prepared, he didn't understand my case and let someone who near killed me off of the hook. My recommendation is to not hire this attorney ever.

In one of the most frightening times in my life Craig Mcelwee came through as my hero. I was charged with sale of 20 dollars of marijuana and possession of two grams of marijuana. The outcome was one year ACOD and I could not believe that he basically made my situation a slap on the wrist. During the entire situation his communication was amazing and I know I was a valued client. I highly recommend Craig Mcelwee as a defense attorney.

It's not easy to find a "good lawyer"! People often ask "do you know a good lawyer?" Now after knowing and being represented by Craig Mcelwee, I can honestly say YES! I would highly recommend him and is services. HE is fast and efficient. The job actually "gets done" not dragging on wasting time and money. More attorneys should be like Craig. I am so glad to have found a counselor I can depend on.

A close friend recommended that I meet with Christopher Chimeri, who was kind and patient with me from the beginning to the end of the divorce process. He went to great lengths to explain each step and he was there when I needed help and support along the way. I trusted him and his staff and am grateful for their guidance.

I highly recommend Chris as a divorce lawyer. After dealing with several lawyers in the past, I was reluctant to hire anyone and even attempted to represent myself. However, after those attempts failed, I had no choice but to seek professional help. I’m so glad I found Chris. He managed my child support case with incredible professionalism and expertise. Chris was thorough and knowledgeable about the law, ensuring that every detail was addressed with care. Throughout the process, he consistently communicated with me, keeping me informed about what was happening at every step. Chris made every effort to avoid a trial, showing respect for all parties involved while advocating for my best interests. When the trial did take place, Chris completed it with impressive efficiency, making the entire process as smooth as possible. I couldn’t have asked for better representation.

We used Stephen Palermo when my son, Nicholas had a fall at school. This attorney was amazing. He made it extremely easy to get paperwork signed. I used The Riverhead office. The whole staff is kind and courteous. They got the job done. They are very professional. They got my son a good amount of money for his injury. I would definitely use him again if I need to. Thanks.

Steven Palermo was kind enough to take my case when other firms wouldn’t. After my accident, I didn’t know who to turn to, but when I found Steven Palermo, he reassured me that I had a good case and advocated for me. He and his staff were professional and personable. They treated me with the utmost respect and we won the lawsuit. He was extremely pleasant to work with, as well as his wonderful staff. I highly recommend Steven Palermo to represent you if you are seeking compensation for an accident.

I had case for unpaid overtime and two other lawyers blew me off because it wasn’t enough. They didn’t even know details. I found Peter online , he responded fast and invited me in for a free consultation. He quickly knew all angles to build a decent case. I received a decent settlement in months , NOT YEARS. He is thorough and responsive and gave excellent advice. I don’t usually leave reviews but Peter truly deserves one for a job well done !

The lawyers I have dealt with in the past, have left me with no confidence or security. Mr. Peter Romero was very knowledgeable assertive and proactive. Whenever I called him and left a message, he would always return my call the same day. He discussed my options and answered all of my concerns. I highly recommend Peter Romero to anyone who needs a Labor and employment Litigator. I want to personally thank him for his professionalism and for making my case run smoothly and in a timely manner. Sincerly Bob

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Hauppauge, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
