I hired Zoe recently to represent me in an OoP case after experiencing a very stressful situation with someone who was harassing, threatening and bullying me. Aside from being so incredibly knowledgeable about the legal intricacies around the case; the most important thing was that she made me feel at ease and re-assured me the entire step of the way. When i first met with her I was beside my self with worry and stress and she was incredible at explaining the entire process and what my options were. She helped me feel empowered when I personally felt defeated, and that meant so much. Suffice to say the case went in my favor and I can't thank her enough.

I hired Zoe to represent me in a family law matter. She listened carefully to my situation and was 100% effective in helping me maintain custody of my children. Because of her specialization in domestic violence matters, Zoe understood the dynamics at play and zealously defended me against my ex’s attempts to inflict further post separation abuse. After many months of enduring intense fear that he would succeed in gaining sole custody, Zoe successfully navigated the case to settlement. At the beginning of the process, Zoe presciently warned that there’s no justice to be found in the family court system. I naively hoped that the judge would see the truth, hold my ex accountable, and understand the full scope of the situation’s impact on my kids. In reality, it ended up being an exercise in damage control in which I didn’t win, but I didn’t lose either. Zoe was on my side every step of the way with realistic advice and clear communication. She used her legal expertise and negotiating skills to protect my children and I from a potentially disastrous outcome. Zoe acted with the highest integrity throughout this difficult process. I was very much impressed with her character and tireless advocacy for women and children. I recommend her legal services without hesitation.

I used Zoe once while she was with the legal aid society and decided to have a consult with her when she was no longer with them. She was fine while she was free but spending money for someone not to listen to you is infuriating. Finding someone who cares about my situation.

I hired Zoe Paolantonio to handle my domestic violence case. Ms. Paolantonio was very knowledgeable with Domestic Violence law and how the system works. She gave me sound and direct advice on what I should do and made it very clear the possible outcomes. She worked very well with my domestic violence advocates and the court system. Further, given the situation in hand, which had been on-going for a long time, she was very caring and listened well to my concerns. She made me feel comfortable with what we were doing and made sure I understood each step we took. Finally, she was ready to go to trial, but the case was settled before trial in my favor. I highly recommend Ms. Paolantonio and plan on using her again if I have another issue in the future.

After having him on retainer for a number of years during which he provided me with periodic advisory/consultation services, Richard ended up defending me in a fairly lengthy and serious crimininal case extending right up to the election in which he won his current NYS Supreme Court seat. Throughout this process he actually played a variety roles and acted on my behalf in many capacities, each of which I am pleased to say he excelled at. Beyond the skill and knowledge he displayed and the hard work that he put into my case, the thing I was left most impressed by was the client-attorney relationship that was formed over this time. His ability to consistently get exactly what was needed out of myself as the client in each phase of this ordeal, while simultaneously making things on my end as comfortable as possible is something that was truly unique in my personal experience. In retrospect, I am most thankful for the way in which he managed to keep me both informed and at ease, and I can only attribute this to the personable style in which he would communicate paired with his consistently evident brand of sincere confidence. Without ever seaming to put out either optimism or pessimism, he always maintained a cool but realistic sense about him which certainly made the many twists and turns of the long road we would end up traveling. While his fees are certainly on the higher end of the scale for the Captial Region, I have no hesitation in saying that the end result and maybe more importantly my experience as a whole were worth every dollar spent.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Hudson, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
