Victoria was the attorney for a mutual client on the purchase of a co-op in Queens, NY. Co-ops are very complex and have many moving parts. Victoria navigated all of them flawlessly and maintained constant contact with our client so that he understood the process and was well-informed despite being somewhat stressed about the home buying process. I can say Victoria helped enormously to mitigate his stress and keep him level-headed right up until closing. I would recommend Victoria to anyone looking to buy or sell a home.

We had such a great experience working with Victoria! She’s so knowledgeable and dedicated to her clients. She really went above and beyond to explain every document in the closing process and worked hand in hand with the buyers attorney to make our sale as smooth as possible.

We hired Victoria 17 years ago for a closing on our first home and hired her again to handle the closing on our second (current) home. She is very professional, thorough and pro-active. Both closings went without a hitch. We are both attorneys and felt very comfortable letting her take the burden of the closing off our hands. We basically just sat back and she did everything, from recommending a property inspector to negotiating with the bank. She has a great personality and seems to get along with everyone. We highly recommend her!

All I can say is BEST EXPERIENCE EVER! Thanks to Victoria, we had the most stress free closing. Even the buyers attorney went out of his way to comment on how Victoria made it the most pleasant and easiest closing he’d ever been a part of. Victoria’s so great work with because she goes out of her way for her clients. She’s brilliant, so easygoing, incredibly accommodating and knows real estate law like the back of her hand. I’d give her more than 5 starts if I could!!!

I have been pleased in all my dealings with Victoria. She guided me through the processes of my real estate matter, step by step, explaining each part clearly. She responded to my calls in a matter of minutes and was always able to reassure me when the process seemed difficult. We got a great result, and I am happy to recommend her.

Ms. Cassidy worked with my aging parents to set up their financial situation for long term care and income. There is no way we could have navigated such a complex system without her. She explained everything in detail so that we could all understand our best choices. All of our questions were answered patiently so that we were comfortable with our decisions. My sister and I no longer have to worry about our parents’ finances to live or pay for long term health care.

Michele has guided me every step of the way. She made it possible to remove my dear friend from a nursing home and get her into her home environment, where she preferred to be. Now she's receiving great care and her assets are protected. I highly recommend Cassidy Law Firm.

I first went to see Dianne Braun Hanley when I was contemplating divorce. She accompanied me through the whole process, not just explaining my legal options, but taking the trouble to understand my motivations and the approach that I was comfortable with. She valued my input. Her interactions with opposing counsel were a model of professionalism. She handled a very stressful and difficult process with compassion for all sides and commitment to fairness, never losing her cool. I always looked forward to our interactions, knowing she would address my concerns and strive for the best outcome.

Dianne Hanley helped me settle my fathers estate several years ago and my mothers estate very recently. Dianne walked me thru every step in the process and was as professional as they come. When family issues arose she knew exactly how to handle each situation. I would not have wanted to go through this process with any other attorney. My Mom chose Dianne because she liked her. As they say...nothing beats a mothers intuition. Dianne is the best.

Dianne saved my children and family. Dianne was confident and helped me create a plan so that my children and I could survive. Dianne supported me legally and emotional while I fought for custody of my children (AND WON... full custody). Assisted me in getting child support, comforted me when I had doubts about my own strength to get through this difficult situation. Dianne always problem solved and included me in the decision making. It was her support and determination that allowed me to keep my career, my home and my three children. She was more than a lawyer took my calls and call back. Assisted in order of protections and always was there for my family. She even came with me to my children's father funeral. Thank you Dianne Bruan HHanley

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Katonah, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
