Cons
1
Concerns about billing practices and transparency
“He never billed us. He just had a bill collector call and demand more money to replenish our security deposit. Only then did we receive a bill. After that we took copious records and made recordings of our conversations. That was when we discovered his bill were not consistent with his actual work.”
2
Potential for communication issues and lack of client-focused approach
“He went way off target from what I hired him to do, then tried to blame me for not giving him strong evidence for how HE wanted it all to go. I was transparent from the start, and who's interest he was working for I have no idea, but in my opinion it wasn't mine.”

We met Peter Hoffman at the lowest point in our lives. The day before our son was to attend a county funded preschool we were informed that the program did not employ anyone medically trained to insure the health & safety of our son. He was not allowed to attend the preschool program he was enrolled in which also provided all of his therapeutic services. The CPSE Meeting was awful & no solution was found. A week later, after meeting with several other attorneys, we met Peter Hoffman. He listened to us, gave us advice & instructions on what to write to our school district. He was direct, informative, helpful & kind all before we had agreed to hire him. He has always been direct, upfront & proactive with our son’s issues. Our journey to obtain the services denied to our son took a significant amount of time, however, without Peter our son would not have received any compensatory services for the year he was denied services. We appreciate everything Peter Hoffman has done on our son’s behave & highly recommended him to everyone.

Hired this man to fight for my child's rights including disability with school, turned out to be the worse mistake in the whole case. I should have researched his name more in depth online.

We hired Peter because we needed help advocating for our daughter within our school system -- along with understanding the legal considerations. Peter has been an asset to us, very knowledgeable, patient, and kind; he helped move us through a challenging situation, where we felt stuck, which resulted in a better outcome for our daughter. Very accessible, as well.

My daughter has multiple disabilities that prevented her from receiving a free and appropriate education in district and modified settings. Peter was clear about objectives and possible outcomes. He was extremely accessible throughout the process. We settled the case to our satisfaction and our daughter now is in a targeted private school appropriate to her needs. Her behavior and ability to learn have improved tremendously. My husband and I are both lawyers with high expectations about performance and reasonable expectations about costs. We both highly recommend him.

Peter Hoffman, esq. is the super-hero to represent your student. He is the attorney that fights thru all legal means for the educational rights for students with disabilities and the myriad of learning challenges. We would not been where we are today without his talent and guidance. Peter digs in for the win for your student's rights and helps navigate with a no-nonsense style that is refreshing. Peter is always available to answer questions, asks the hard stuff, makes a plan and travels thru the maze of private and public education layers at light speed! Peter wastes no time in getting what your student needs and beyond. He comes prepared and well versed in all areas. He is upfront, friendly and knowledgeable of not just educational issues, he has a vast network and knowledge of health, disability and diagnosis with the medical and non-medical professionals. As parents, You need Peter to help navigate the changing landscape of education, growth and accommodations. As much as parents think or want to do these yourself - Peter is the difference in making the changes. His legal expertise and professionalism is what makes the difference to having an outstanding outcome !!! Peter is a super star and does not back down from school districts, teachers or any curve that is thrown. We hired Peter when our student was in grade school. There was a horrible barrage from our school district, which went against all of medical diagnosis and specialist opinion, recommendations. The district would not grant accommodations. We called and hired Peter, and it has been the best decision.. Peter went in full force and represented our student and interests. Because of Peter we are eternally grateful to stepping into the viper pit and coming out with our student victorious, a scholar, athlete and a highly respected, honored and awarded by the school community. Peter made the difference by fighting for the educational accommodations that gave our student the opportunity. Peter is our attorney, confidant and dragon slayer. Peter will be your super hero for your student too.

Ms. Cassidy worked with my aging parents to set up their financial situation for long term care and income. There is no way we could have navigated such a complex system without her. She explained everything in detail so that we could all understand our best choices. All of our questions were answered patiently so that we were comfortable with our decisions. My sister and I no longer have to worry about our parents’ finances to live or pay for long term health care.

Michele has guided me every step of the way. She made it possible to remove my dear friend from a nursing home and get her into her home environment, where she preferred to be. Now she's receiving great care and her assets are protected. I highly recommend Cassidy Law Firm.

I first went to see Dianne Braun Hanley when I was contemplating divorce. She accompanied me through the whole process, not just explaining my legal options, but taking the trouble to understand my motivations and the approach that I was comfortable with. She valued my input. Her interactions with opposing counsel were a model of professionalism. She handled a very stressful and difficult process with compassion for all sides and commitment to fairness, never losing her cool. I always looked forward to our interactions, knowing she would address my concerns and strive for the best outcome.

Dianne Hanley helped me settle my fathers estate several years ago and my mothers estate very recently. Dianne walked me thru every step in the process and was as professional as they come. When family issues arose she knew exactly how to handle each situation. I would not have wanted to go through this process with any other attorney. My Mom chose Dianne because she liked her. As they say...nothing beats a mothers intuition. Dianne is the best.

Dianne saved my children and family. Dianne was confident and helped me create a plan so that my children and I could survive. Dianne supported me legally and emotional while I fought for custody of my children (AND WON... full custody). Assisted me in getting child support, comforted me when I had doubts about my own strength to get through this difficult situation. Dianne always problem solved and included me in the decision making. It was her support and determination that allowed me to keep my career, my home and my three children. She was more than a lawyer took my calls and call back. Assisted in order of protections and always was there for my family. She even came with me to my children's father funeral. Thank you Dianne Bruan HHanley

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Katonah, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
