Ms. D’Andrea represented my children in my divorce matter and I felt from our first interaction that she could and would advocate zealously for by kids. She did not disappoint. Ms. D’Andrea met with my children regularly, called to check on how they were doing, made contact with their doctors, teachers, and therapist. She went the extra mile for my kids to get to know them and learn what was in their best interests. Children are the most innocent and vulnerable participants in our legal system and I feel blessed to have had such a thoughful and sharp representative for my children in the courtroom. Without her voice being heard on their behalf I believe my children would have suffered. At times, my ex engaged in personal attacks against Ms. D’Andrea because she advocated for my kids contrary to the wishes of their dad but she did not back down or pander to the intimidation tactics. I can only imagine an attorney of her caliber has grown accustomed to being bad mouthed by those she opposes but I was impressed by her tenacity and commitment to my kids. She has been an angel in their lives when they desperately needed one. I am forever in her debt.

I battled my ex in family court for over two years and I hired Liz after I fired one of the local “good ole boys” due to his ineffective representation and completely inadequate communication skills. Don’t be fooled...the guy with 30 years experience isn’t necessarily the best for the job. I found Liz to be direct and honest- she was able to articulate the risks and benefits of different courses of action clearly for me which was important because as a layperson I had never been through this before. She helped me obtain a fair resolution which allows me to be an equal partner in raising my children. She was always timely in responding to me and didn’t make promises she couldn’t deliver on. She was sensitive and compassionate but didn’t take any nonsense from the other side who tried every trick they could think of to minimize my role in my kids lives. I can’t thank you enough, Liz, for the guidance you offered and the patience you showed me (despite my never ending questions!). I would go back to Liz again in a heartbeat if ever the need arose.

Liz was appointed to my case. I could not have been more blessed. I will consult with her always. She was and continues to be phenomenal. Compassionate and understanding of reality and how to translate it into the court room. Very grateful for her outstanding work.

Having been married for 26 years, my divorce was extremely complicated. We had real estate, kids, businesses, and every other entanglement you can think of. Liz really was a port in an overwhelming storm. She explained everything to me in detail and didn't add to my anxiety (like the first two lawyers I met with had done). She is compassionate and thoughtful and she got me and my family through a very difficult time. I can't say enough about Liz and the work she does but perhaps the best indicator of Liz's skill and ability was when my ex said when leaving the courthouse "I wish I had hired her". I refer everyone I know to Liz and will continue to do so with complete confidence.

At the most emotionally difficult time in my life, Elizabeth D'Andrea went the extra mile to be not only exceptional at her role as my lawyer, but she was very compassionate and patient as well. She understood that decisions in divorce are not easily made and there is a constant fight between the head and the heart. Liz helped me work through these decisions by using her exemplary knowledge of the law and putting things in a perspective which made the decisions a little easier to make. In a nutshell, Liz knows the law and is not shaken by the opposing counsel's tactics BECAUSE of her knowledge of the law. I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone facing this incredibly draining process to put their trust in Liz. In the end, I gained a friend and I can't thank Liz enough.

I was a passenger involved in a car accident. I chose the Mainetti firm as their ratings were excellent. I was very fortunate to have been introduced to Alex. From day one, to the final favorable settlement, he addressed my case with the highest professionalism and determination. I could not have chosen a better person to represent my case. He answered all my concerns with the conviction. His attention to details, careful jury selection, professional rapport, gave me the confidence that I was in the hands of a top notch lawyer.

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Kingston, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
