I hired Dorothy from a recommendation from my former divorce attorney Joanne White, who is excellent in her own legal specialty. She was excellent throughout the period of the transaction but when the buyers used an out of town bank to purchase my home, the closing went sideways because the money was not wired. But Dorothy protected us and did an excellent job to get information on where the funds where and followed through completely through the next day when we did receive our funds. Ken her paralegal assistant was very detailed oriented and I can see why he is invaluable asset to the Dorothy Tischler legal team.

Firstly, thank you, Dorothy, for your incredible help throughout the purchase of our first home. My husband and I heard wonderful feedback from other clients who had previously enlisted Dorothy's services and we were not disappointed. Not only was Dorothy extremely detail-oriented when initially going over the contract with us, she also went out of her way to truly protect us, explain anything we didn't understand, and saved us a LOT of money. When a large storm swept through the region the day before we were scheduled to close (and power was out at our new house), Dorothy arranged to have a generator power the needed office equipment at her office so we could still close on time (meanwhile, just down the street from Dorothy's office, a large tree had fallen and blocked off traffic). To still be treated as a priority - even in such extenuating circumstances - just added to our overall positive experience. Both Dorothy, and her amazing paralegal, Ken, were very responsive and always got back to us with answers to any of our many questions incredibly quickly. Everyone told us buying a house would be stressful, but we couldn't have had a smoother experience. I would absolutely recommend Dorothy and her team. Thank you!!

Dorothy and her team are fantastic. She represented us in both the sale and purchase of our homes this spring/summer. Dorothy was so patient, easily accessible and very knowledgeable. For example, I wasn’t sure of a certain document that I needed, and Dorothy stayed on the phone with me until I found the correct one (after many failed attempts at locating what I needed). Her team kept us informed every step of the way so we always knew where our file was. Definitely recommend!! Thank you Dorothy!

I am a client of Dorothy Tischler who has used her services since 2015 for home purchases and sales. Most recently, this fall of 2020, Ms. Tischler helped us sell out Niskayuna home as we moved to the Bay Area in California. As our legal counsel, my partner and I trusted her enough to give her power of attorney to sign and settle all matters for our home sale. She helped us navigate a complex septic issue we had to resolve as part of the sale. She excellently negotiated a very fair deal that cost us very little money to fix our home. It was a fantastic and professional experience that occurred on time, with great guidance about how to navigate such a complicated sale. We chose Dorothy because she did outstanding work for us when we bought our Niskayuna home in 2015. In our first search, a seller did not disclose over $10,000 in damages to the home until after the accepted offer and home inspection. Dorothy helped us get our full deposit back and search for a new home instead of getting trapped in a money pit. When we found our eventual home in Niskayuna, she made the process clear and easy. Her work and all her office team are extraordinarily professional. They made no errors in any parts of our purchases or sales, always gave us cogent advice on the process. She has also served my parents in a sale that went very well in Glenville. That is the lever of work she does; I recommend that my retired parents whom had only ever bought one home to use her. I recommend her services for any and all homebuyers who want a fair price, fantastic service, and outstanding results. Please call her office for my phone number if you want an in-person reference. I cannot believe there are so many other positive reviews as my experience was very similar to the first poster from 2013. We retained Dorothy at the recommendation of our realtor (also probably a mistake). She had terrible communication; perhaps responded to one of the emails I sent out of many; never answered or returned phone calls; when our mortgage loan originator finally called her with us in office, when we were basically at the finish line of closing, she responded, "Oh yes, that name sounds familiar." We had significant concerns on our sale, including the fact that the sellers were refusing to fill out the Property Condition Disclosure Statement. Most of it wasn't a huge deal, but I wanted to know if there had ever been a fire. Lo and behold - there had. As evidenced by the char marks we found upon final walk-through that were previously covered up. There were also unsettled issues of who would pay for what, and she assured us it would get handled in the closing. Except when it came time for closing, she told us it couldn't be changed. The whole thing was a nightmare and she was so unplugged. Our mortgage originator was really who ran the entire home sale.

I have never posted a review for anyone or anything before, but I was so appreciative for the job Paul and his firm did for me that I felt compelled to write something. I was involved in an extremely complicated transaction, my realtor and my accountant both told me I should retain Paul Sciocchetti. They were right, I highly recommend Paul Sciocchetti.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Latham, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
