We had an unusual case – one of guardianship that crossed state lines (guardianship originally awarded in NY). We found Milana on a Google search, and fortunately, she was able to take our case. We couldn’t be more pleased and highly recommend her! Milana is a genuine, professional, straight-forward attorney who knows her stuff! Because we live out of state, all our work had to be done virtually and via phone/email. She was responsive and communicated well, bringing us a sense of peace throughout the process. And I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge her assistant, Colleen, who was also quick to act and respond to communications. Her fees were extremely fair, and I would have paid more because she is that good. I know from personal experience that you won’t find anyone more attentive to your needs, or more knowledgeable and able to navigate the litigation process than Milana. If you need someone to help you in a family law matter, Milana is the best for the job; you want her on your side. Thank you, Milana, for your time and attention to our case.

Milana is better than the best!!! She is thorough, detailed, smart, great at communication, and really cares about her clients. She gives them so much time and advises you like you’re part of her family which is priceless. I hope I don’t need her but if I do she will be my attorney for life!

Words cannot express how Milana got me through the toughest time of my life. My divorce was so complicated and emotionally charged and her calm demeanor helped me stay grounded. She truly cared about me and my children and gave me the strength to continue doing what was best for us, even when I threatened to run away to another country and just start a new identity. (It’s funny but seriously, it got that bad lmao) I was nervous about hiring a woman but let me tell you, she can go head to head with any male attorney around. I guess not all women are intimidated by a man like many of us going through a divorce. She is educated, passionate…. But also has the empathy that I was looking for. I can’t recommend her enough. I owe her so much and I’m just so thankful.

Milana is the best family divorce law attorney I have worked with, if I could give her 6 stars I would. From our first meeting, she explained everything to me in terms I could easily understand and was always very responsive when I had questions. I think she also offers a very reasonable price for her knowledge and excellent services. Divorce is never an easy thing, especially when kids are involved, and Milana not only proved to be a fighter, for my case but she also is a genuine person that really cares for your well-being and would check in to see if my kids and I are doing ok. Her legal representation is outstanding; don't waste your time and money on other lawyers, as I did, call her today!

Milana Tepermayster helped me with a child custody case, her professionalism is remarkable, along with her knowledge and execution of the law. This has been one of the most traumatic experiences for everyone involved and I feel that when people are faced with the fear of the unknown and then given a sense of peace throughout this unfamiliar legal process, then they have found the right legal representation. I definitely found that in Milan and for that I'm really grateful. She always responded to me in a timely manner and always keeps you updated and explains in detail everything that is happening, she was very patient with me, and she helped me stay calm when I was about to explode. Also, the thing that impressed me most about her was nothing was "sugar coated". she was very straight forward and told me what to expect each step of the way. Without hesitation, I give Milana my highest recommendation. Your family process will be easier and more professional with her fighting by your side.

Andrea was extremely responsive and I felt very taken care of. I had access to her email and cell phone 24/7 in this highly contentious divorce and we ended up with an agreement that was extremely favorable. I have dealt with other lawyers before and she is by far above and beyond in her compassion and professional service. Five stars!

Andrea wrote my will and subsequent accessory forms. She was reasonable in price, timely and did exactly what I wanted. I would recommend her for anyone needing "cut and dry" legal advice.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Montgomery, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
