I suffered domestic violence, I had to leave the house with my son with only the clothes on my back and our lives saved and go to a Safety & Change shelter, I have documented and video evidence of all the violence suffered by me and my son, I have video of my husband's betrayal with another woman. I sought help from the Legal Aid Society because I am undergoing pre-cancer treatment. The Legal Aid Society said they could help me and they did. I was referred to the law firm de Moya & Assoc PC I arrived at the office scared of everything because domestic violence is very difficult, we suffer a lot, we lose our dignity, faith and many other things and we also run out of money. What I heard from de Moya & Assoc PC was; I have to accept my husband's lawyer's conditions because the duration of the marriage was short, 2 years in January 2024. How many years would I have to suffer this violence to be entitled to my personal belongings under US law? I am writing this rant to share with others who experience domestic violence in my case at de Moya & Assoc PC it made it clear that I am not entitled to anything because the domestic violence I suffered was for a short period, HOW LONG DO WE HAVE TO SUFFER DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TO HAVE ANY RIGHTS? so I don't even have the right to my personal goals, I took what was placed outside the house, just a few things, de Moya & Assoc PC said that I have to accept the lawyer's conditions My husband, if I don't do everything, I will have a big problem with the Judge and I will have to pay my husband's lawyer a small fortune.

I used Ms. Hilowitz for the past 6 years on a complicated trust dispersal after the death of a family member. I was the Trustee. She handled it with expertise and patience seeing it to its amiable conclusion for all concerned even when dealing with exceptionally difficult counsel from other parties. Thank you!

It is without hesitation or reservation as a former and long standing client of Ms. Lynne S. Hilowitz that I highly recommend her legal services. She is an outstanding community minded and long time resident of Rockland County who has taken leadership roles within the legal community as an active member of several associations. Ms. Hilowitz is extremely capable in her understanding and knowledge of law along with all of the necessary applications; she is also perceptive, genial and all around refreshing to work with. Ms. Hilowitz has the utmost in professional and ethical standards along with the ability to sift through complicated issues. She listens affably to her clients with a keen, considerate ear. Ms. Hilowitz is not only a genial, accomplished attorney but has the ability to interpret and explain complicated legal matters in clear, logical and comprehensible terms giving her clients more than a reasonable down to earth understanding of all aspects associated with their individual issues and needs. Ms. Hilowitz is an attorney I put my faith and trust in during a very difficult time it was a choice I made without regret! Anita DuJohn-Sims

I couldn't be happier having Daniella V. Pascaru representing me in my workers' compensation and Social Security Disability cases. She worked so hard making sure I received the all of the benefits I deserve. I've been dealing with NY workers compensation for over 20 years. I had previous lawyers represent me, but they never seemed to interested in what I needed long-term. What sets Daniella apart is her ability to stay focused and see the big picture, and maintained open communication, keeping me updated on the progress and answering every question I had. She was there for me, every step of the way, through one of the most challenging times of my life. Securing Social Security Disability benefits was not as easy a process as I thought it would be, especially during covid times, but her persistence and thorough approach ultimately led to success. Additionally, as my workers' compensation case nears its conclusion, I am confident in her ability and know there will be a favorable outcome. I highly recommend Daniella V. Pascaru to everyone in need of exceptional legal service. Her unwavering advocacy and genuine concern for my wellbeing has made her someone I trust to navigate the complexities of workers' compensation and Social Security Disability law.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of New City, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
