There are few people I could write a glowing report about, but Jody is certainly worthy. Ms. Cucolo has demonstrated legal knowledge and dynamic litigation skills beyond words. My family has been through so much, yet Ms. Cucolo never rushed me off the phone, over billed me, or became unprofessional. She listened and cared. She knew who to work with in the system and if she didn't, she figured it out quickly. I am forever grateful for her time, experience and strategic defense. Thank you Jody!!

Jody handled my divorce many years ago. From my perspective, the most important aspect of the ordeal was to make sure I ended up with as much time with my daughter as possible. I wasn't going to settle for alternate weekends and end up barely knowing my daughter as most divorced dads end up. Jody got me that time. It's been over 12 years since my divorce and I am closer with my daughter than many full time married dads. Each case is different and offers different challenges as each ex-spouse and their associated attorney will put up a variety of defenses and arguments all to screw you and perpetuate the fight. Jody is a fighter when she has to be and a settler when it works in your best interest. She is a true advocate for the client - which is the whole point of what an attorney is supposed to be. I now have the luxury of a significant quantity of passed time to look back and objectively evaluate my outcome. I can honestly tell anyone who is searching for an attorney - if you are in that terrible moment in life - when you need to hire a divorce attorney because things just aren't right - Jody is THE right lawyer.

The title speaks for itself, this women is independent with out any professional staff. My first impression is that I would benefit from having better communication from a attorney then a office staff. Not the case! I did have inflated bills, was told not to try arbitration as my wife had proposed it was a waste of time and would cost me more in the long run. During a intimal consultation she requested me to step out of her office as she had to take a incoming call. While I waited in adjacent room I could hear her actually yelling and threatening the other party. Then slam it would appear she hung up on them. I thought it had to be something personal. When she called for me to return she started to tell me about a "stupid" attorney she was on a case with. I did retainer her she was available and said she could file papers in a week with the proper documentation. I quickly provided it. A week went by with her calling me and demanding information on the spot. I explained I was working. I was actually getting reprimanded. With in 2 weeks time I received a call from Mrs.Cucolo stating I needed to give her $5000. more after already giving her $5000. I ask for a copy of what charges I had incurred thus far. Still these papers were not done. She said it would take a day or so to give it to me. This didn't make sense she was asking money but couldn't clearly show me why? two days later I saw a statement with all kinds of billing for all these phone calls that she made to ask me something that was already provided. I was simple answering to a Petition for Divorce without and children involved. I quickly realize that she doesn't get along after speaking with my wife whom informed me of a conversation she was a witness to with her attorney. My ex and I settled out of court for as little over $2000. When I told her I didn't require her services she swore at me and was nasty, telling me I would be sorry. It appears she is desperate for clients and I would strongly urge anyone to stay away.

Mrs.Gionta is nothing short than an excellent lawyer. She walks by your side the whole process while maintaining professionalism and guiding you to excellence. She will answer any questions you have and doesn’t treat you like just another job. She was with me during the worst time of my life that I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to get through. She pushed me through to win and on pure honesty. She is never short on details when other lawyers did not want to take the time to even listen. She gave her heart to my case and made me feel seen. I can’t say that other lawyers have passion like she does. I would recommend her to absolutely anyone who is in legal need. Mrs.Gionta will always hold high respect to me due to everything she did to help me during the hard time. THANK YOU MRS.GIONTA!!!!!

Both my wife and I feel so lucky to have worked with Felicia on the purchase of our first home. She was professional, excellent with communication, always reachable and prompt when responding to our million questions. I think what we most appreciated was her ability to break down what was an intimidating and complicated process into easy to understand steps as well as calming us down when we needed it.

I used Ms. Hilowitz for the past 6 years on a complicated trust dispersal after the death of a family member. I was the Trustee. She handled it with expertise and patience seeing it to its amiable conclusion for all concerned even when dealing with exceptionally difficult counsel from other parties. Thank you!

It is without hesitation or reservation as a former and long standing client of Ms. Lynne S. Hilowitz that I highly recommend her legal services. She is an outstanding community minded and long time resident of Rockland County who has taken leadership roles within the legal community as an active member of several associations. Ms. Hilowitz is extremely capable in her understanding and knowledge of law along with all of the necessary applications; she is also perceptive, genial and all around refreshing to work with. Ms. Hilowitz has the utmost in professional and ethical standards along with the ability to sift through complicated issues. She listens affably to her clients with a keen, considerate ear. Ms. Hilowitz is not only a genial, accomplished attorney but has the ability to interpret and explain complicated legal matters in clear, logical and comprehensible terms giving her clients more than a reasonable down to earth understanding of all aspects associated with their individual issues and needs. Ms. Hilowitz is an attorney I put my faith and trust in during a very difficult time it was a choice I made without regret! Anita DuJohn-Sims

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of New City, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
