Lave literally saved my life, I had a criminal misdemeanor charge, I pleaded guilty, too, even though I was not involved or had anything to do with what happened that day, but the police officer falsified some of the evidence that he presented in court, and I ended up pleading guilty to a misdemeanor, because I simply had no choice. Some few months after INS used this charge to get me deported. Labe was hired and did a wonderful job studying my case and managed to appeal my conviction, which lead to my release with no bail, from prison. Labe did a wonderful job fighting this case for me until we won , reversing it to a violation. And believe me this was not an easy task, took a lot of time and work, I’m sure 100% if I have used any other attorney I would not make it. Labes knowledge of the criminal system and criminal law is above and beyond. This guy doesn’t take shortcuts to make it easier for him self at costumers expense, he fully dedicates himself and his time to make sure you receive best service and results there is possible. He don’t promise anything ahead of the end, but believe me you will receive the best you can get. And that is my honest opinion, and believe me I have been around the block more then a few times and have used many different attorneys in NYC for different incidents that I have got my self in to. This guy is the best and hones I have seen, if not the best to have fighting for you in NYC period. God bless his heart and soul he really came through for me. I wish all of you good luck and success in your case.

Mr. Richman is an extremely skillful and dedicated attorney in one of the hardest areas of legal practice which is post-conviction relief. As an immigration attorney representing a client in his removal proceeding, I had to seek the best criminal defense attorney I could find to file a motion with criminal court to vacate and change the client’s criminal sentence so that he could qualify for cancellation of removal. He was a long-term lawful permanent resident facing deportation with no chance to be even considered for cancellation because of his single aggravated felony conviction. A reduction of the client’s sentence by only one day, would change the classification of his conviction for immigration purposes, making him eligible to apply for cancellation. (I wish my client’s former criminal attorney knew what difference just one day in the sentence could have made for his non-citizen client.) However, it was very hard to change the sentence through a post-conviction motion. Another criminal defense attorney retained by the client’s family had already filed such a motion without success. At this time, I decided to find the best attorney in town to try it again, and I found one, Mr. Richman. He re-filed the motion and fiercely fought for our client at the state court level. He was then ready to continue the battle in federal court when, finally, the criminal court agreed to vacate and reduce the sentence. This victory allowed me to reopen the client’s deportation case and seek cancellation of removal, which was granted. Our client is a US citizen today and the life of his family of immigrants was not torn apart by deportation due to effective assistance provided by Mr. Richman. I remain grateful to Mr. Richman for accepting such a challenging case and for the remarkable winning that opened an avenue for me to fight for the client in immigration court. I also greatly appreciate all the guidance on immigration-related criminal issues I have received from Mr. Richman throughout the years.

Words cannot express how well Labe Richman does his job. He is the kind of person that appreciates challenging cases and turns second-rate lemons into top-shelf lemonade. My brother's immigration case required an appeal to criminal court and the family was afraid there would be no way out. It was not a slam dunk by any stretch of the imagination. We found Labe incidentally as the case was being represented by an attorney that knows him in an immigration matter. He was straightforward with us all through the matter. His surgical precision with the task at hand offered an outcome far better than anyone anticipated, even himself! The magic that happens when Mr. Richman puts pen to paper is astounding. He not only has excellent mannerisms and expresses depth of care for his clients, he also knows the ins and outs of appellate work, which is a very hard field even for practicing attorneys. I can imagine in the near future Mr. Richman will be turning clients away because of time constraints and inability to represent more than he can handle.

I had a hard time finding an attorney to represent my case. The first time I met Mr. Labe Richman I had confidence and I felt comfortable because he made me feel that way. He is not only knowledgeable, but also he is dedicated, hardworking, and trustworthy. He kept me well informed about my case and the legal procedures. I was lucky to have Mr. Richman as my attorney. I would highly recommend him to anyone who might need legal help. I'm so thankful for everything you did for me Mr. Richman. You saved my life. Thank you so much!

Judith is my company's business attorney and is very well versed in what she does. Plus, she is understanding and thoughtful in her solutions to anything that could arise. She recently assisted us with a client issue that came up unexpectedly and it was resolved successfully. I doubt that we would have been able to resolve the issue without her assistance.

David consulted with us on a recent Breach of Contract case. He was professional and insightful and took the time to really understand the situation and the outcome we were looking for. It was very clear that he had our best interests in mind, not just some sort of settlement/resolution that would be easier or convenient for him. A true professional and look forward to working with him again.

I was a former MD in finance, & after 30+ years of marriage, at just under 60 yrs. old, I retained Donald early 2015. My court approved final consensual settlement was processed in December 2019. (Timing was my ex's fault, she explored 3 attorneys in sequence.) I got to know Don fairly well over that time. He prefers a consensual agreement between parties, NOT court battles. - i suspect that his style minimizes the parties' angst, and doesn't maximize his billable hours per case. Speaking of which, he bills in 1/10 hour increments... and I found his bills always accurate and fair. (I've worked with lots of law firms professionally). Donald was always calm and cool even when I found retracing repeat issues with my ex supremely frustrating. He never fanned the flames. Importantly, because of some odd investments I had, Don was quick and effective at reaching tax, finance and accounting specialists whose input we needed to factor into our settlement. Weird bottom line, If I ever had to get divorced again, [which I will never never] I'd retain Donald.

I highly recommend Don as a divorce attorney. From the beginning he showed himself to be a man of integrity and knowledge. Unlike other attorneys, Don was not out to try to run up a bill that was not necessary. He advised me to try to work out as much as possible with my ex-spouse before getting him involved. He is somebody who I was always able to count on and I always knew that my interests were primary in his negotiations.

I did not know of Don at the time of my divorce; however, when my attorney was retiring, he referred me to Don. I had numerous issues with my ex-husband an Don took the control and stress from me. He quickly diffused the situation and was instrumental in ensuring my children's welfare.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of New York, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
