I interviewed many divorce attorneys in NYC, and my ex hired one of the best known attorneys in the business. I chose Kara to represent me in a very difficult divorce because she knows the law inside and out, is an excellent strategist, understands and can navigate the family court system, and was a strong advocate and partner through the entire divorce process. Kara was extremely responsive, leveraged her experience and expertise in complicated custody situations, and brought in the full resources of her firm on key issues. For example, Kara enlisted Alyssa Rower for parts of my case which, in partnership with Kara, was highly effective. Kara genuinely cares about her clients, puts client interests first, and has impeccable character and ethics. Kara captained me through the most challenging part of my life securing a new, sustainable path forward for me and my family.

Let's face facts...No matter what type of relationship you have with your spouse (good, bad, ugly), going through a divorce is a very painful process (especially in NY). Kara represented me (I'm a man) and was incredibly professional and helped me understand the process which unfortunately, is not easy and does not favor those who are getting a divorce (the NY courts are a mess). There are many emotions, questions and decisions (especially if you have kids), but Kara has the ability to walk you through various scenarios and help you get comfortable with what life will look like once you are officially divorced. She can be very tough when she needs to be, but does not believe in dragging this process on and on while the meter is running. She also has a great team around her so you will be in good hands. I highly recommend Kara and wish you the best of luck.

My brother and I had to navigate an extremely challenging divorce and child custody battle. We knew it was going to be a long, hard, and expensive journey because we had tried a collaborative divorce process that failed. Communications between the parties had completely broken down. It was an emotionally-charged situation where the mother was withholding the child. We were at our wits end and had no choice but to pursue litigation that took 2.5 years. We had the privilege of working with Kara Bellew and Karina Van Houten at Rower. There are no words to adequately express their exemplary services and how much they did for us. My brother, and our family, cannot recommend Kara and Karina highly enough. He could have lost his 7-year-old daughter, and we could have lost our niece. Kara demonstrates the utmost professionalism and integrity. My brother was struggling financially, and she helped guide us in the most efficient and cost-effective strategies possible under the circumstances. Her honesty and ethical standards are beyond reproach, and we echo the glowing sentiments of all her clients. Kara’s expertise and extensive experience in divorce law are unparalleled. She skillfully navigated the complexities of our case, the law, and the courts, always keeping our best interests—and the child’s best interests—at heart. Her deep knowledge and strategic thinking were instrumental in achieving a favorable outcome for us. What truly sets Kara apart is her client-centered, results-oriented approach. She provided personalized attention, always making herself available to answer questions and address time-sensitive concerns (even after hours and weekends when needed). Her dedication and compassion were evident throughout the entire process, ensuring that we felt supported every step of the way. Communication with Kara was always clear, consistent, and timely. She kept us informed about every detail and development in the case, explaining legal terms and our options, including the risks and ramifications, in a way that was easy to understand. This transparency was incredibly reassuring and helped us feel in control during a very difficult time. We are extremely grateful for Kara’s efficiency and fair billing practices. She was always transparent about billing, never overcharged, or misled us. There were times we noticed that she didn’t bill us for quick questions or if she felt things took unnecessarily long. She handled our case with remarkable efficiency, ensuring that every step was handled promptly and effectively. Her rates are fair and inline for New York City. Kara Bellew is a highly dedicated and skilled attorney who genuinely cares about her clients. She is a true advocate for those she represents, and her track record of successful outcomes speaks volumes about her capabilities. We wholeheartedly recommend Kara to anyone in need of a top-notch divorce attorney. And we can’t say enough about Karina Van Houten. Thank you, Kara and Karina, for your unwavering support and exceptional service. To this day, we still lean on Kara for advice when things come up. You have made a significant positive impact on our lives. My brother, my niece, and I cannot thank you enough. We are forever grateful.

I have known and worked with Kara Bellew for years. She is literally as good as it gets. She has been by my side through very difficult (emotionally and legally) situations and stays wise, creative and fierce always. Her exemplary understanding of right from wrong, coupled with her insane intuition sets her apart. I would trust her (and have) for myself, my family and my friends. There is no one better, more honest and more responsive - even when she is delivering news I would rather not hear. I mean - she was a lawyer at Sanctuary for Families for 10 years! Talk about a great person!

I had the best experience working with Kara and her legal team at Rower. Kara demonstrated complete professionalism and support to my joint custody case. There was never a moment when I felt uncertain of her capabilities. Her positive demeanor and clarity of her communication gave me reassurance during her service. Even after the divorce Kara is accessible and available to help me on issues that popped up after my divorce was settled. Her commitment never let up and I am grateful for her care and personal attention!

Judith is my company's business attorney and is very well versed in what she does. Plus, she is understanding and thoughtful in her solutions to anything that could arise. She recently assisted us with a client issue that came up unexpectedly and it was resolved successfully. I doubt that we would have been able to resolve the issue without her assistance.

David consulted with us on a recent Breach of Contract case. He was professional and insightful and took the time to really understand the situation and the outcome we were looking for. It was very clear that he had our best interests in mind, not just some sort of settlement/resolution that would be easier or convenient for him. A true professional and look forward to working with him again.

I was a former MD in finance, & after 30+ years of marriage, at just under 60 yrs. old, I retained Donald early 2015. My court approved final consensual settlement was processed in December 2019. (Timing was my ex's fault, she explored 3 attorneys in sequence.) I got to know Don fairly well over that time. He prefers a consensual agreement between parties, NOT court battles. - i suspect that his style minimizes the parties' angst, and doesn't maximize his billable hours per case. Speaking of which, he bills in 1/10 hour increments... and I found his bills always accurate and fair. (I've worked with lots of law firms professionally). Donald was always calm and cool even when I found retracing repeat issues with my ex supremely frustrating. He never fanned the flames. Importantly, because of some odd investments I had, Don was quick and effective at reaching tax, finance and accounting specialists whose input we needed to factor into our settlement. Weird bottom line, If I ever had to get divorced again, [which I will never never] I'd retain Donald.

I highly recommend Don as a divorce attorney. From the beginning he showed himself to be a man of integrity and knowledge. Unlike other attorneys, Don was not out to try to run up a bill that was not necessary. He advised me to try to work out as much as possible with my ex-spouse before getting him involved. He is somebody who I was always able to count on and I always knew that my interests were primary in his negotiations.

I did not know of Don at the time of my divorce; however, when my attorney was retiring, he referred me to Don. I had numerous issues with my ex-husband an Don took the control and stress from me. He quickly diffused the situation and was instrumental in ensuring my children's welfare.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of New York, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
