AMAZING, EXCELLENT GREAT PERSON !!!!!!!! I strongly recommend Attorney Mercedes Cano and her staff. I don’t know if one review will be enough to describe and explain the Skill, the Patience, the knowledge and the Professionalism of Mercedes Cano. First of all my case wasn’t easy, it was a lot of hard work and a lot of paper work. But I can tell that Mercedes Cano has been AMAZING, SO HELPFUL and PRESENT during all the process plus the day of the interview. What I want to say it’s, Mercedes Cano help you from the beginning until the end, she takes the time to explain you all the steps, and tell you exactly what to expect and when, she is as well VERY DETAILS ORIENTED. Attorney Mercedes Cano has ALWAYS replied in time to my phone call and my email (IT IS so appreciable when you fell that someone care about you and understand clearly how important it is for you) Today I don’t have enough word to describe how grateful I am with all her work, and proudly owe a 10 years Green Card. Definitively, I highly recommend Attorney Mercedes Cano for her Professionalism, Skills and Knowledge Once again Mercedes, Thank you so much to have change my life and my future. All the Best to you and your Team. Olivier 08/06/2020

I got married in July 2013. Soon after, my husband and I we were looking for a good lawyer to represent us for our immigration case since I came to this country with a C1 visa many years ago and I overstayed. Many years had to past for me to finally start fixing my immigration status: marriage equality was finally legal across the United States and the Obama administration installed a mandate to pardon immigrants in the U.S territory instead of going back to their countries to wait for a pardon. I remember very clearly our first appointment with Ms. Cano, and I remember mostly because she was very friendly, the staff was very friendly, and she exposed to me what steps I must follow to get my papers in order, and get my resident card. She was very clear, very organized, and she speaks fluent Spanish and English. First, we started the family petition. Once that was confirmed, we follow with the “extreme hardship” waiver, and finally with the interview that was going to be made in my country. After long months of hard work from both parties, we got the waiver approved and soon after we had the date for the interview. Now looking back it seems very simple, and it kind of is because the professionalism of Ms. Cano’s office made everything run very smoothly. They would call me every time I needed to bring something to the office or if they send me some documents to my residence. They would email me or be in contact all the time through the entire case. They would also give me copies of all documentation; hard copy, electronic copies, etc. In short, they were on top of my case throughout my immigration case. When I finally got my residence, we convened again 2 years after that to start the process for my permanent resident. Thanks to the amount of evidence Ms. Cano ask me for and the efficiency of her office, I can finally say I am a permanent resident of the United States. I can say, very confidently, that I recommend 100% Ms. Cano’s services for any immigration issues you may have. Every case is different and for some is long and tedious, but you can have the certainty that they are working for you in a professional manner.

Ms. Cano was very thorough in absolutely every aspect of the case. She made me and my family extremely comfortable throughout the entire process. Our process took about 3 years but there was always contact and updates. We were never left in the dark and all options, whether good or bad, were explained so that there were no surprises. Thankfully Ms. Cano did an excellent job and our case was victorious. I am more than satisfied with my decision to have hired Ms. Cano, the level of professionalism that exists within herself and her staff is tremendous. She will fight for you until the very end and explore every avenue to represent you to the highest degree. My family and I are forever indebted to her for the amount of work she put in to win my case.

My wife and I met with Mercedes in March of 2015. We also met with a few other lawyers that month to plan for her change of status after our wedding. Originally we had just met for a consultation but her consultation was so thorough and confident and up to date that we decided it would be worth it to go the extra mile and save up for a few months to hire her for our case. We saved and in August of 2015 we hired her and sent in our paperwork. She was very helpful in telling us what we needed to get done and what paperwork to organize to give us the best shot and her experience shows. She was very specific with what we needed and she went above and beyond with what we should prepare to send in to USCIS. By the time our interview came along we unfortunately could not bring her along, but luckily she prepared us very thoroughly to the point where we felt overprepared for our interview. Today we have her permanent residency and everything could not have gone smoother. Mercedes Cano was supportive every step of the way, was helpful in what we needed to prepare and gave us peace of mind for what could have been a much more stressful process. It is very much worth the investment just for the peace of mind of knowing an expert is making sure your case is given the best possible chance at success.

Judith is my company's business attorney and is very well versed in what she does. Plus, she is understanding and thoughtful in her solutions to anything that could arise. She recently assisted us with a client issue that came up unexpectedly and it was resolved successfully. I doubt that we would have been able to resolve the issue without her assistance.

David consulted with us on a recent Breach of Contract case. He was professional and insightful and took the time to really understand the situation and the outcome we were looking for. It was very clear that he had our best interests in mind, not just some sort of settlement/resolution that would be easier or convenient for him. A true professional and look forward to working with him again.

I was a former MD in finance, & after 30+ years of marriage, at just under 60 yrs. old, I retained Donald early 2015. My court approved final consensual settlement was processed in December 2019. (Timing was my ex's fault, she explored 3 attorneys in sequence.) I got to know Don fairly well over that time. He prefers a consensual agreement between parties, NOT court battles. - i suspect that his style minimizes the parties' angst, and doesn't maximize his billable hours per case. Speaking of which, he bills in 1/10 hour increments... and I found his bills always accurate and fair. (I've worked with lots of law firms professionally). Donald was always calm and cool even when I found retracing repeat issues with my ex supremely frustrating. He never fanned the flames. Importantly, because of some odd investments I had, Don was quick and effective at reaching tax, finance and accounting specialists whose input we needed to factor into our settlement. Weird bottom line, If I ever had to get divorced again, [which I will never never] I'd retain Donald.

I highly recommend Don as a divorce attorney. From the beginning he showed himself to be a man of integrity and knowledge. Unlike other attorneys, Don was not out to try to run up a bill that was not necessary. He advised me to try to work out as much as possible with my ex-spouse before getting him involved. He is somebody who I was always able to count on and I always knew that my interests were primary in his negotiations.

I did not know of Don at the time of my divorce; however, when my attorney was retiring, he referred me to Don. I had numerous issues with my ex-husband an Don took the control and stress from me. He quickly diffused the situation and was instrumental in ensuring my children's welfare.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of New York, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
