I honestly don't know how to thank Ed and his firm for all of their help and support. Nothing I write here will do justice to the quality and sincerity of Ed’s and his team’s work. First of all, Ed is extremely knowledgeable, highly strategic, and has all of the top qualities that you look for in an effective lawyer. He smoothly and quickly settled my case with my former employer via a law that no other lawyer that I consulted with even thought of. Also, he helped me avoid the potentially embarrassing experience of litigation, yet still secured a very substantial settlement for me. The outcome he produced was above and beyond my highest expectations. However, monetary recovery was not the most valuable outcome that I received from working with Ed. The greatest benefit that I gained from this experience was the strong sense of self-empowerment that Ed instilled in me, and, to me, as a woman, this is priceless. Ed and his firm gave me the support, motivation and courage to stand up for myself and to do what was right for me. What I admire most about Ed is his empathy and his unique ability to fully and completely comprehend the positioning and experiences of women in the workplace. When I first walked into Ed's office, I felt an instant rapport with him. Ed patiently listened to me and was completely present and focused while I told him my story. He listened without judgment and offered sincere counsel. After our first meeting, I instinctively knew Ed had my best interest at heart, and I could fully trust him. I was in good hands. Ed helped me to obtain justice not only monetarily, and not only morally. He helped me to obtain justice in its complete sense, and for me, as a woman, that’s extremely important. I have unwavering faith in Ed and his firm's commitment to helping women in the workforce. If you feel that you have been wronged by your former employer, I highly recommend that you hire Ed and his firm, especially if you're a woman. He will not only get you a settlement that is most likely beyond what you expect, but he will do so ethically, morally, efficiently, and you may even gain a sense of self-empowerment that you never knew was possible.

I was referred to Ed by my employment lawyer when it was clear that the only way there was going to be a resolution to my dispute with my employer was if I hired a litigator. We spoke on the phone and I immediately liked Ed. He is articulate, highly experienced, strategic and compassionate. Ed is also fair. He has his own practice, which is something I prefer in a lawyer. I found him to be reasonably priced (or, as reasonably priced as a lawyer can be!). One of the things I valued in Ed is his understanding of both the employee and the company's side of any situation, as he's spent considerable time as a defense lawyer. I liked that he could get into the other side's brain. I found Ed to be super responsive and very professional. He did a great job of keeping me abreast of his communication with my former employer's lawyer and, though I know he has so many other high-priority cases, I felt that I was given just as much attention and care. Our case moved to mediation and I was even more impressed with Ed, being able to see him in action. His ability to build rapport is admirable and, I believe, important. He clearly has an excellent reputation in the legal world and amongst some of the most renowned mediators. During mediation, he guided me, gave me perspective, but didn't force me to make any decisions I wasn't comfortable with and I am deeply appreciative of this skill of his. Throughout everything, I always felt that Ed was putting my best interests ahead of his own. We ended up settling and I am pleased with the outcome, an outcome that I know is in great deal because of the excellent work Ed did on my behalf.

I was referred to Ed by a colleague who had conferred with him. I can write all day long and it won't be enough to express my gratitude towards Ed for his advice and help. I am especially thankful he explained the entire process to me, as often as I needed, and let me know exactly what I might be in for should my case go to trial. He was equal parts knowledgeable and empathetic as well as being an all around great guy. I heartily and enthusiastically recommend Ed Cerasia.

I was referred to Ed by a trusted contact of my husband's. I had some urgency for legal counsel on an employment situation that I was seeking to resolve. Although Ed was out of the country on vacation when he received my voicemail, he responded just a few hours after I left the message, and set up an appointment for a phone consult. He asked excellent questions and outlined possible courses of action and outcomes. As the situation evolved, we had another phone consult in which he provided invaluable information, and he subsequently reviewed and edited a letter to my employer. End result: I achieved the best case scenario resolution to the situation. I have no hesitation in highly recommending Ed to anyone facing an employment issue.

I was put into contact with Ed Cerasia in regards to a termination which I felt had some issues to address. Throughout the process, Ed was extremely prompt in communicating both by e-mail and telephonically. His knowledge of employment law was clearly exceptional and he was also knowledgeable of the behind-the-scenes details of my industry and former employer. During our first meeting he took thorough notes and clearly know where to focus and which details were (or were not) relevant. He was always professional, even-tempered and gracious. When it came time to negotiate, he proved to be a seasoned counselor and pushed just hard enough without going overboard. He always gave us his expectation of where the discussions were going, and he was persistent in pushing back when it was necessary. He also knew when and how to close out our discussions and handled all the paperwork very efficiently. Lastly, he always put our interests first, even if it would impact his fees, and even rounded down the fees as a courtesy. I felt incredibly safe and well-represented the entire way through, and cannot recommend him strongly enough.

Judith is my company's business attorney and is very well versed in what she does. Plus, she is understanding and thoughtful in her solutions to anything that could arise. She recently assisted us with a client issue that came up unexpectedly and it was resolved successfully. I doubt that we would have been able to resolve the issue without her assistance.

David consulted with us on a recent Breach of Contract case. He was professional and insightful and took the time to really understand the situation and the outcome we were looking for. It was very clear that he had our best interests in mind, not just some sort of settlement/resolution that would be easier or convenient for him. A true professional and look forward to working with him again.

I was a former MD in finance, & after 30+ years of marriage, at just under 60 yrs. old, I retained Donald early 2015. My court approved final consensual settlement was processed in December 2019. (Timing was my ex's fault, she explored 3 attorneys in sequence.) I got to know Don fairly well over that time. He prefers a consensual agreement between parties, NOT court battles. - i suspect that his style minimizes the parties' angst, and doesn't maximize his billable hours per case. Speaking of which, he bills in 1/10 hour increments... and I found his bills always accurate and fair. (I've worked with lots of law firms professionally). Donald was always calm and cool even when I found retracing repeat issues with my ex supremely frustrating. He never fanned the flames. Importantly, because of some odd investments I had, Don was quick and effective at reaching tax, finance and accounting specialists whose input we needed to factor into our settlement. Weird bottom line, If I ever had to get divorced again, [which I will never never] I'd retain Donald.

I highly recommend Don as a divorce attorney. From the beginning he showed himself to be a man of integrity and knowledge. Unlike other attorneys, Don was not out to try to run up a bill that was not necessary. He advised me to try to work out as much as possible with my ex-spouse before getting him involved. He is somebody who I was always able to count on and I always knew that my interests were primary in his negotiations.

I did not know of Don at the time of my divorce; however, when my attorney was retiring, he referred me to Don. I had numerous issues with my ex-husband an Don took the control and stress from me. He quickly diffused the situation and was instrumental in ensuring my children's welfare.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of New York, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
