Claudia and her team are the best in business. We have successfully received permanent residency status for my husband, and Claudia and team have been there through the journey from the fiancé visa application through to the final interview. It turned out to be quite a complex and long case, hit with COVID delays, but the team were consistently there by our side throughout. The counsel and guidance was always thoughtful and considered, they were never going through the motions, and advice was always specific to our situation and nuances of the case. And as an LGBT couple, we always appreciated their unwavering commitment to inclusion and diversity.

I hired and retained Ms. Slovinsky to apply for asylum but she failed to deliver and charged me for unreasonable amount of fees. There were no detail information or proof regarding the charges and fees in the invoice that I received from her after I requested a refund. I raised my concerns and disagreements regarding the unreasonable fees to Ms. Slovinsky but she had no intention to resolve. Moreover, Ms. Slovinsky tried to ask me to sign a different and new retainer agreement with $2500 just for my naturalization interview, which was way too expensive comparing to the market standard. Ms. Slovinsky ignored my request to return my files and documents related to my case. And I had to wait for at least 20 minutes every time that I had an appointment with her associate.

Claudia represented me in a long process of requesting and receiving asylum, receiving a green card, and, just a few weeks ago, obtaining my US citizenship. My case was long and complicated, but she patiently and thoroughly went through every single detail, assembled an impressive file of supporting documents and statements, and helped me become a full citizen at the end. I couldn't have imagined trying to navigate this process without an expert, and she is the best. I would absolutely recommend her to anyone needing assistance with immigration matters.

Claudia Slovinsky and her team of attorneys are in my opinion the very best in their field of immigration law. I can state this with certainty based on my personal experience with this firm. I am one of this countries newest citizens thanks to Claudia and her team. Back in 2010 I made the mistake of applying for my citizenship on my own without the help and advice of a lawyer, this is when my nightmare began. It turned out that the Green card which I had in my possession for ten years was invalid. This happened because i had unknowingly signed a waiver giving up my right to my green card . I sought help for this issue through a community organization and to my delight my green card was re issued to me by immigration services . I lived and worked and traveled in and out of the USA many times during this period but, at my interview with immigration services the book was basically thrown at me, as they told me that my green card was invalid even after they had sent it back to me ? It was then i realized that i needed not just a lawyer but the very best immigration lawyer that i could get. I was advised to consult with Claudia Slovinsky and i must say it was sound advise. Throughout the course of our consultations, I came to know Claudia as an extremely knowledgeable and experienced immigration attorney. Her firm has many years experience dealing with all sorts of immigration issues. Her approach to my problem was very professional and she gave me the reassurance and optimism that i needed in this very difficult and confusing time in my life. At the time i was married to a US citizen which definitely helped my case and after several months Claudia secured a new green card for me. I was told then by immigration services that i could reapply for citizenship after two years and nine months had passed. Three months later I was unfortunately dealt another devastating blow as my wife passed away suddenly. Claudia and her staff reached out to me and my daughters at the time to offer their condolences and i greatly appreciated this. As I was no longer married to a US citizen, I would have to wait five years and nine months to reapply for citizenship. Time passed and it was time to reapply for citizenship and I did not hesitate in contacting Claudia Slovinky and her team in assisting me . I feel that I could not have been in better hands throughout this whole experience and I greatly appreciate Claudia and her office for being very professional and extremely approachable. Sincerely, Patrick.....Citizen.

Has a difficult experience with her many years ago. My wife was applying for green card through marriage. Her mother passed away and my wife was desperate to go to her mom's funeral. Claudia told us there was nothing we could do. A couple of days passed and then an acquaintance told my wife about something called advance parole. We ended up retrieving everything from Claudia's office and under desperate pressure we were able to work everything out on our own (with INS) and my wife went home. Had this not worked out my wife would have been forever haunted. My impression was that Ms. Slovinksy did not care about my wife's situation and that she made our simple application much more complicated and slower than necessary.

Judith is my company's business attorney and is very well versed in what she does. Plus, she is understanding and thoughtful in her solutions to anything that could arise. She recently assisted us with a client issue that came up unexpectedly and it was resolved successfully. I doubt that we would have been able to resolve the issue without her assistance.

David consulted with us on a recent Breach of Contract case. He was professional and insightful and took the time to really understand the situation and the outcome we were looking for. It was very clear that he had our best interests in mind, not just some sort of settlement/resolution that would be easier or convenient for him. A true professional and look forward to working with him again.

I was a former MD in finance, & after 30+ years of marriage, at just under 60 yrs. old, I retained Donald early 2015. My court approved final consensual settlement was processed in December 2019. (Timing was my ex's fault, she explored 3 attorneys in sequence.) I got to know Don fairly well over that time. He prefers a consensual agreement between parties, NOT court battles. - i suspect that his style minimizes the parties' angst, and doesn't maximize his billable hours per case. Speaking of which, he bills in 1/10 hour increments... and I found his bills always accurate and fair. (I've worked with lots of law firms professionally). Donald was always calm and cool even when I found retracing repeat issues with my ex supremely frustrating. He never fanned the flames. Importantly, because of some odd investments I had, Don was quick and effective at reaching tax, finance and accounting specialists whose input we needed to factor into our settlement. Weird bottom line, If I ever had to get divorced again, [which I will never never] I'd retain Donald.

I highly recommend Don as a divorce attorney. From the beginning he showed himself to be a man of integrity and knowledge. Unlike other attorneys, Don was not out to try to run up a bill that was not necessary. He advised me to try to work out as much as possible with my ex-spouse before getting him involved. He is somebody who I was always able to count on and I always knew that my interests were primary in his negotiations.

I did not know of Don at the time of my divorce; however, when my attorney was retiring, he referred me to Don. I had numerous issues with my ex-husband an Don took the control and stress from me. He quickly diffused the situation and was instrumental in ensuring my children's welfare.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of New York, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
