William Garvin was an exceptional lawyer! He came recommended to me by a friend that had hired him years ago. I was very anxious about the situation I had gotten myself in, he instantly made me feel at ease. Mr. Garvin is extremely knowledgeable and experienced while simultaneously being comforting and calming. He went above and beyond to get me the best deal he possibly could, which superseded any of my expectations. I am very grateful for his help and hard work. I would recommend him to anyone I know in need of a lawyer!

Not going to be specific in my cases or charges but Mr. Garvin knows how to handle business very professionally. He is honest and straight up. He will tell you what the deal is. Black and white, no sugar coating. He walks into the court room like a BOSS and you can feel the energy beaming off of him. He even keeps in touch with clients after the case is taken care of to touch base and is just very respectful and down to earth I highly recommend him for any situation especially drug/dui charges.

Bill is the absolute best. I met him through unfortunate circumstances of course back in 2003? 2004? I had 14 charges pending, both felony and misdemeanor, plus was out on bail and rearrested twice. Yeah, I had some issues back then. Had to turn myself in while still out on bail and Bill got me home that night, although the alleged victim of an alleged crime was a State Trooper! I walked out intact and grateful. Now that I have gotten older and much wiser Bill is my go to guy for questions, for friends, and for stupid court clerk's that try to have me arrested because I stand up for myself. Bill got up out of the barber chair to defend me, didn't answer the court clerk's call but answered mine. Now that's an attorney you want, is it not? I don't get many tickets or anything anymore, but when my friends do, or I just have a question about law that I cannot find an answer on, guess who I call? Haha, last time I was in court he couldn't make it, but we texted back and forth to get a favorable outcome for me. Really, can you imagine a better attorney? He's like a friend that you only see on bad weather days, but a very appreciated one for sure.

I hired Mr. Garvin for a criminal defense case (DWI). He took the time to educate me on the law that applied to my case so I could make informed decisions on how to proceed. He obtained a great result for me and kept me informed throughout the case. I'm glad he "told me like it is." Why would anyone NOT want their lawyer to be direct and upfront with the reality of your case? If you can't handle the truth about your case because it hurts your feelings, then the problem is YOURS. I've already recommended him to friends.

I called Dan after receiving a speeding ticket. Dan was able to get the ticket reduced and I didn't even have to go to court. I highly recommend Dan for any vehicle and traffic matter. He resolved the matter for a very reasonable fee and was always responsive to any questions I had.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Newburgh, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
