Very detail oriented attorney. Follow up very good. Was willing to drive 35 miles out of his way (2 hour drive in traffic) to represent me for a ZBA hearing on Long Island. Outcome was satisfactory and everything was approved.

I met Peter Klose through very unfortunate circumstances, my brother was dying and we needed to get his affairs in order. From the beginning, what struck me most about Peter was his deep level of compassion and respect for my brother and then me. That never changed throughout our experience. Peter fully understood the level of grief that we were dealing with. His empathetic character was a tremendous gift for me in managing not only the loss of a beloved family member, but also the anxiety of now living through such a traumatic experience while having to settle his estate. Peter, on more than one occasion, also provided emotional support as I expressed how anxious the process of closing a loved one's life down was making me. He was honest in offering professional and personal advice. His words, "Let me handle this. It's what I do" couldn't have brought any higher level of trust in him. He was supportive and patient in allowing me to ask the same questions repeatedly. He was thorough in communicating with me throughout each step of the process and in understanding the details of the paperwork. Peter's "I don't like to lose" attitude assured me that he was truly working in my best interest. My circumstances weren't typical, but through his passionate work ethic, we got through it all. I can't say enough good things about the decent human being that Peter is, much less the level of his legal expertise. When I met Peter, he was a complete stranger, an off-handed recommendation from another stranger to me. When everything was settled, and I could reflect, I realized that Peter is one of those people that I was fortunate enough to have come into my life at the worst time of my life. In my vulnerability, I felt protected by him. I completely trusted him to handle the details of my brother's life without hesitation. We closed the door on this tragic event by sharing a slice of pizza, and a conversation about some of the more pleasant things in life. In closing, I highly recommend Peter Klose to anyone who needs an attorney who comes from a foundation of passion for his work, compassion for his clients, honor, and expertise in knowing very well how to manage your legal affairs.

Peter is a fantastic attorney and an even better person. He is thoughtful, diligent and hardworking. He helped us fight a greedy builder by working through our town’s planning and zoning boards to stop a monstrosity being built next to our primary residence. And he did so with a tact and grace that he was then able to then help us buy that same property at a significant percentage discount over asking price. Unlike me, he didn’t get angry or take it personal in fighting a multi-year battle against the developer, who routinely lied to our town. He brought in zoning experts, an engineer and an architect to sway the town’s Zoning department and see fit that the developers project fail with multiple variance violations - he did so with an assertive grace that blew my wife and I away! Trust me; I’m cheap but I even told Peter he didn’t charge us enough for his great work. I’m now happy to call Peter a friend and genuinely can’t say good enough things about him. When we needed someone to have our back, Peter came through in a big way for our family, and for the historical integrity of our little community.

Peter is prompt and communicative. I worked with him on three different transactions/deals within 3 months time (he worked with accuracy and professionalism). He plans for the future and thoroughly prepared for any outcome of my cases. His advice was most appreciated with a transaction that I had to walk away from. I felt invincible with him by my side for my other deals. Without a doubt, I will choose Klose & Associates again.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Nyack, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
