I contacted Craig 13 years ago and after speaking with him and meeting him to discuss Chapter 7 bankruptcy I hired him to handle the case. He did an excellent job and I can't tell how you how impressed I was with his service. Fast forward to 2013 as a result of divorce I reached back out to him for help and just like he did 13 years ago he was there to help me out and I am glad that I did. What sets Craig apart from other attorneys in the area is that he is a down to earth easy spoken straight up guy who you can feel comfortable speaking to. From the first initial meeting with Craig he walks you through everything explaining the pros and cons and develops a strategy that best fits your situation. He is extremely helpful and knowledgeable in his field and is always available if you have any questions or concerns. I have referred several people to Craig, who have unfortunately gone through similar situations that I have, and every one hired Craig to represent them. If your looking for top notch service I would highly recommend you reach out to Craig.

I found Craig through a flyer in the mail. I was about to file for bankruptcy with no idea where to start, so I made the call. What impressed me the most is he's not you're stereotypical uptight lawyer, he's a real guy & you can talk to him without fear of judgement. I hired him because I trusted him & his fees fit my budget. He knew the process & was with me throughout as was his incredible support staff. You become their priority & when you have questions or concerns about what's happening you can count on their support for answers. When the court date came, Craig was early, prepared, & on point. We had the only case in court without issue or missing documentation. Outside the court room, he's just like you & me. Highly recommended to make a difficult time as comfortable as possible. Thanks to Craig & Tom.

I hired Mr. Humpleby back in early December for a DWAI Drugs case. I was charged in two different districts strangely enough for a car accident in one city and I guess one mile down the road was a completely different district. A fairly complicated case requiring a lot of effort and time . I had a great deal of tickets and a situation nobody I had spoken to ever heard of. Something that was not a cut and forward easy case. I got lucky and received a flyer of his services. At first I wasn't sure if I wanted to go with a lawyer I didn't know off of a flyer. I didn't know any lawyers and didn't like any of the ways that any lawyers that I called had taken days to call me back. Mr.Humpleby is different. He has a very personal approach to defending his clients and 90 percent of the time he calls you back himself or he calls back within hours. This is not the case with hiring Craig Humpleby. You can expect a lawyer who shows up to court on time, is personable, honest and works extremely hard to prove you're innocence. I did not have to barely lift a finger towards my case as soon as I hired him, he went to work. His fees were very fair and reasonable for the amount of work and traveling he had to do. I am very satisfied with the results of this case and the plea bargain Mr. Humpleby orchestrated for me. I could have gone to jail or been just a number in a system if it wasn't for Craig Humpleby. Something I don't think people realize when they are faced with charges even small ones or traffic tickets is,if you have a lawyer you a treated differently by the courts. It shows that you are sorry for what you did and are taking financial responsibility regardless if you are convicted of not. That goes a long way in how you are looked apon when you face the judge. They get you in faster. He did offer to take my case to trial and had no qualms about doing everything possible to win the case. He clearly stated the benefits as well as risks of all of my options and never once tried to dissuade me from taking my case all the way. Attorney Coyle is by far one of the most dedicated and thorough Counsilors in the business! He spent countless hours researching my case and finding complimentary arguments to back up his position. "Andy" met with me as often as I needed to, to help me understand every step in the appeal process. His availability extended to 24/7 email correspondence, countless telephone calls if I had questions, and in person meetings as well. Attorney Coyle exudes confidence and professionalism when he's in court, making him a very great choice for representation in trial and any sort of legal presentation really. This man made me feel like he cared about justice in my favor. He represented me as if it were his own case he was appealing. I would hire him again and again should I ever need his services. Thank you for everything Counsilor! You're the best!

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Syracuse, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
