I had a deeply disappointing experience with this lawyer and his team. I retained their services for approximately six months and spent over $4,000, but the results were far from satisfactory. The situation escalated when I was misinformed about a court hearing, which I ultimately missed. It appeared that their approach prioritized convenience over truly advocating for my goals. Additionally, communication throughout the process was severely lacking, making the overall experience highly frustrating.

Excellent communication and responsiveness
“Matt was very professional and kept me up to date the entire time that my case was being processed.”
3
Successful case outcomes and client satisfaction
“I'm so glad he represented me! I am very pleased with the outcome!”
4
Friendly, compassionate, and caring service
“Matt & Katie were great to work with. Honest, professional, and communicative. Couldn't have asked for better people to work with on a complicated matter.”
5
Affordable and cost-effective legal services
“They are the best lawyers, but Dennis and Maria young are the best attorneys the Handled both my cases I had 2 dwi and they reduce that to a dwai and had dismissed one of my traffic tickets 100% recommended”
Cons
1
Inconsistent quality of service and communication issues
“I had a deeply disappointing experience with this lawyer and his team. I retained their services for approximately six months and spent over $4,000, but the results were far from satisfactory. The situation escalated when I was misinformed about a court hearing, which I ultimately missed. It appeared that their approach prioritized convenience over truly advocating for my goals. Additionally, communication throughout the process was severely lacking, making the overall experience highly frustrating.”
2
Unsatisfactory handling of certain legal matters (e.g., divorce, custody)
“Mr porter and Katie are fantastic to work with! Communication was great and they were super friendly and outgoing. Definitely recommend them! But his reckless and absolute refusal to speak on behalf of his clients desires in Divorce and Custody should make it against the standards to practice in those areas. Charged over 8000 dollars and I ended up worse than if I had a court appointed attorney for custody. Selfish and shady.”
3
Slow and delayed responsiveness in certain cases
“Process took longer than I thought, but in the end I am happy with the result. Thank you guys.”
4
Lack of follow-through and poor client support in some instances
“I chose them by default to handle my mother's estate when she passed because they were the ones who helped write her will. They've dragged their feet on this for THREE YEARS. I've been passed around from paralegal to paralegal as they seem to come and go from the firm very quickly. Any time I call or email they're always very rude as if I'm imposing on them by requesting they do the job I have hired them for.”
5
Overcharging and lack of transparency in billing
“Spent mega $$$$$ and 2 years to go through a divorce in Watertown. Used this law firm and always wondered why it took so long. I guess that's the way divorce disputes go sometimes. However, what bothers me is that recently I had to request a certified copy of the decree be sent to another state. I figured after paying so much for the divorce this would a be a courtesy to finish out the divorce. Even when I contacted the attorney there was never any mention/discussion of a financial agreement or charge for services. Several weeks go by and received an email statement of charges of $182 with a 1% late fee every 30 days.”

I went to have a consultation with Jane and she easily could have told me that I really needed a lawyer for my custody issue. Instead, she gave me sound advice, put my mind at ease and told me what I could do without a lawyer. I admire her honesty. In the future, should I need a family lawyer, I will go to Jane.

The lawyer I was assigned seemed to have a lot of other cases but took on my case despite that. I could tell he wanted to help me out so it was nice to have him on my team. The time frame was a little longer than I hoped but the results were good. I’m waiting to hear back from my employer now after losing my job but once that’s settled I should be good to go.

Mr. Inserra has handled both bankruptcies I unfortunately have had to file (long story, ex gf issues), I digress. There's a reason I hired Inserra a second time, because my first was smooth and flawless. Mr. Inserra was sure to be as informative and available to me as possible and always explained in detail and in terms I could easily understand each and every step of the NYS bankruptcy filing process. Moreover, he and his secretarial staff (to which are extremely well-versed in every aspect of filing as well) went above and beyond by doing everything they could within their power to expedite my filing as I was due to be out of state for several months and needed to be present for my meeting of debtors. We were able to successfully nail down a date prior to my leaving and the very moment I walked into the conference room for that meeting of the debtors I was immediately seen by the bankruptcy court trustee whom examined my case while asking a few case related questions and within less than 4 minutes I was out the door and 100% debt free! I can't express how highly I recommend his services!

Attorney Inserra did my bankruptcy in the early 1990s and then again in the last year. He was very knowledgeable and walked me through the entire process explaining everything in layman's terms so that I could understand what I was signing and how the whole bankruptcy process works. I would definitely and have recommend him to my family and friends.

After consulting several other lawyers about my complex financial issues, I found Mr. Inserra. His knowledge of bankruptcy law far exceeded that of other attorneys I spoke with. He and his staff were courteous and helpful throughout my case and made a difficult situation much easier for me and my family. I highly recommend Mr. Inserra for anyone considering bankruptcy.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Watertown, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
