Nancy and team guided me effectively through unfamiliar territory. Nancy's approach was refreshing after interviewing two other aggressive divorce attorneys who had styles unlike my own. Nancy and I created an immediate working relationship and I had confidence I had a partner in my corner. She would stick to facts, provide me options/choices and work with me in patient and respectful ways to find a timely resolution for my family. I felt she acted in my best interest. She is a confident, credible, polished professional with extensive experience and knowledge in matrimonial law and a skilled negotiator. She and the team worked many hours on my matter. She is smart, honest, fair and direct in communications. There were no surprises during my time working with Nancy and her team. Nancy was masterful and articulate in the courtroom and focused on every word and detail in my agreement to protect the long term interest of my children. I am grateful to have worked with her and would recommend her to others.

Nancy was overall a blessing for me and my family! Nancy was knowledgeable compassionate and a great communicator. Nancy helped me unravel a child support situation where I signed a divorce without an attorney or clear child support order. After over a year with no child support for my children, I spoke with Nancy. With her guidance I found the courage to take on the challenge. I am extremely grateful for her support and helping me fight for my family. I highly recommend Nancy! Thank you Nancy and Jeanette!

I am beyond satisfied with the level of legal service which Nancy provided during one of the most challenging stages in my 4 year long divorce court experience. I am so thankful that I had Nancy in my corner to provide wise counsel and diligently work on my behalf to bring settlement to my case. During my divorce court experience I encountered many lawyers, and I can honestly say that Nancy was the most professional, convicted, and genuine persons that I met. Nancy guided me through two simultaneous court cases and created a settlement to provide a way for my family to finally be out of the court system. I knew that Nancy was genuinely dedicated to my situation. The service Nancy provided was exemplary. Nancy was extremely organized and even assisted me in the process of getting more organized. Nancy was always there when I needed her, and was very responsive. I would MOST DEFINITELY advise you to consult her services, Nancy is the TRUTH! I am so thankful for the opportunity to work with her, she is truly the best!

I cannot recommend Nancy highly enough. I walked into her office unnerved by the divorce process, terrified of losing full custody, deeply worried about the asset division and feeling completely helpless. After just a few minutes of talking to her, Nancy not only understood my situation, but started to make me feel better about it. I was constantly impressed with Nancy's skills as an attorney. She immediately grasped the situation, made the process readily understandable, came up with strategies to deal with the thorniest of issues, was prepared to fight whenever necessary and ultimately obtained a far better result than I had thought possible. Nancy is also a gifted drafter and efficient attorney who not only prepared flawless papers, but did so quickly (my spouse's counsel charged considerably more to make changes to papers Nancy drafted than Nancy charged for preparing the papers from scratch and reviewing the other side's edits). As thrilled as I was with Nancy's legal work and the result she obtained, they pale in comparison to the gratitude I feel for the genuine kindness and concern she had for me and my kid.

I had the good fortune of retaining Lydia Milone for my divorce proceedings in 2019, and I say this with the utmost respect and gratitude- Lydia is a lioness; ferocious in her client’s defense and protective of their needs and emotions in what are for them, very turbulent times. Lydia shepherded me through one of the most difficult experiences of my life- listening to my concerns, protecting my interests and offering sage advice through the entire process. I’m eternally grateful that it was she by my side through such conflict, and I wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone in need of assistance traversing the legal system in matters of divorce and family law.

Russell Fayer is a wise and patient attorney. He knows how to get successfully to the end of a transaction but never loses sight of what is right. I have enjoyed many real estates deals with him and he is a constant source of prudent advise. Highly recommended!

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of White Plains, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
