Pros
1
Effective in handling complex legal cases and achieving favorable outcomes for clients
“Basically I had a lapse in my insurance which I didnt knew about and DMV also didn't notify me so they suspended my registration. Cop ran my license plate and gave me 8 misdemeanors. Scared and worried because this never happened to me before and I have never been to court. I was about to pay up some other agency who were charging my alot of cash and didn't even let me meet the attorney until the day of the hearing. I just casually checked my mail, Mr. James Schwartz's letter came and gave him a call. He was very convincing and straight forward. I met him in person last Saturday and I swear he did exactly today in court what he told me in person. Got my misdemeanors dropped and I paid my fine and all of this was done withi”
2
Flexible and accommodating with payment arrangements
“Also when it came to payments he was also flexible and was able to hold off any payments to the court for a couple of weeks this was a big plus for me.”
3
Excellent communication and client support
“James is the best lawyer in Long Island. No matter what your need is! He will be there for you 24/7 working side by side to represent you in the best way! I have never had such a pleasant experience with an Attorney. He showed up to court on multiple times and diligently worked to scored the best deal for my future. He always picked up my calls right away and followed up.”

James was very helpful and informative from the day I contacted him. I hired him to represent me for tickets related to my car accident in February. He was great with communication, very informative and I felt confident that he could navigate this process for me. I am very happy with the results and would recommend James to anyone that needs a criminal defense attorney.

When I thought hope was lost and my life was over. This man restored it all for me! Got stopped twice by Suffolk PD, and after receiving more than a couple tickets, I knew I would have to pay a hefty fine and most likely lose my license. Well, was I wrong for thinking that? After consuming James for a day and a half, not only did I fix my license and bring it back into working order but this God sent of an attorney went to court in CI, told me to not to worry and go to work. I went to work and about 11AM gives me a call and asks “do you want the good news or bad news?” I said give me the bad news first to get it over with, he said “bad news is we won’t have anymore business with eachother after the good news” I’m shocked to hear that so I say give me the good news! “Good news is the judge dismissed both cases and threw back all out” I looked like a kid wanting to jump up and down at work. This man is the real deal ! Anyone that needs a lawyer or has a future case or even wants to consult him for any advice, hit this guy up ! He’s the man and I couldn’t be more appreciative and grateful for his help ! James thank you again !

i got tickets for suspended license and registration and the day before my court date i gave james a call and he picked up right away ready to help me out! he sat on the phone with me for hours throughout the day informing me on things i was unaware of, and helped me get this case settled, and things settled on my personal end. this could have been thousands of dollars in tickets and points on my license but he got it dropped down to a simple cheap parking ticket without me even stepping foot in the courthouse. i will 100% be going back to James when i need assistance in the future!

Caryn Lilling and her firm were retained by the insurance companies on our behalf to handle an appeal of a complex litigation. The trial attorney had improperly handled the matter and as a result, an unreasonably excessive judgment was entered. Further complicating the matter was that a significant portion of the judgment was disclaimed by one of the insurers, and there was a high probability that we would have to personally go out of pocket to pay the uninsured portion (a six figure sum). Caryn worked on the matter with Katherine Solomon and together they obtained a very favorable result on the appeal. The judgment was very significantly reduced. In addition, Caryn and Katherine went above and beyond and successfully negotiated with the insurance companies and with the Plaintiff so that (notwithstanding the insurance disclaimer) the Plaintiff agreed to accept the insurance proceeds in satisfaction of the FULL judgment with no out of pocket costs to us. Caryn, Katherine and the entire firm were at all times professional, courteous, attentive and meticulous. I would absolutely recommend Caryn and her firm.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Woodbury, New York?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
