Holden and his firm where hired to deal with a custody modification filled from the other party. The other party wanted full custody and I just wanted everything to stay the same. From the moment I spoke with Madison on the phone I appreciated her warmth, honestly, kindness and solution based responses. Madison was able to get me a appt very quickly. When I walked in to Holdens office I had sense of relief that over took me, a sense of belonging. I met with Holden, I tell him hey I’m a person in recovery, I’ve fought very hard to get 50/50 custody and I will not loose that. I made that very clear. He understood what a person in recovery has to go through, the fight I endured to get my child back. He respected me and the journey that I’m on. I came to him as a open book and was honest about everything. I told him where I’ve fallen short as a parent plus all the amazing things that I do as a mom to. Holden comes correct, blunt, acts with integrity and humility which to me that’s hard to find in a lawyer. I walked into his office thinking that I was going to loose joint custody over personal parenting preferences and lies. I came out with my head held high and a unspoken promise that the order would stay the same. Holden gave me a sense of security that no other lawyer has been able to provide on this 5 year Journey. Holden isn’t scared to do the right thing for the child, he’s not afraid to stand up to the “big dogs” in town and that I’m forever grateful for. As time went on Madison would call to just check on things.. which absolutely freaked me out because from past experiences lawyers only call with bad news and never just to check on you and your case. We have been dealing with this case for about 9 months now and I got to the point that I enjoyed Madison’s calls. I was able to be honest with her, cried on the phone with her, and able to let her see a part of me that many folks don’t see due the sense of security that this office provided. We didn’t have to go to trial, but one thing I know for certain is that this firm was ready to take on the world for me and make sure that I wouldn’t loose my parenting time with my child. I truly believe that Holden has always had my best interest at heart and he would never suggest something if it truly wasn’t right. Thank you Hometown Counsel! #Holdenclarkforjudge

I personally went through a very difficult and devastating situation. In pursuit of an annulment, I knew I needed someone with confidence, expertise, professionalism, and empathy to represent me. Attorney Clark and his team provided that every step of the way. I sincerely appreciated their customer service and timeliness. Attorney Clark did an amazing job representing me, and we came out victorious! Thank you!

When I first met Brittney, I was having a panic attack and I was desperate. It was a Friday afternoon and all of the offices were about to close. I was referred to Hometown Counsel by another attorney who could not represent me. I have been extremely THANKFUL and HAPPY! With the support I have received here. Everyone has been great at responding to my emails and phone calls (being that I call a lot!). I like that Mr. Clark and I had a great understanding on my goals and I appreciate that he has been very honest about what can/cannot happen. It was also great seeing people react when they would hear who was representing me. It made me feel more safe in knowing that I have a great lawyer and team by my side. I would highly recommend Hometown Counsel. I was assisted with Domestic Violence/Restraining order/Child Custody. His staff was also kind enough to help me find a therapist.

I really didn't want to get a lawyer after I had my wreck, but I was getting so many calls and felt pressured. Once I met with Mr. Ferguson and his assistant, I felt so much better. I'm so glad that I hired them. It took awhile to get my money, but the waiting paid off - I got a much better deal than I expected!

I honestly don't understand why Ms. Lee is still practising Law as a Public Defender. Because she should be in private practice. I would recommend her to anyone who wants the best representation they can get. I would put her up against Rick Beam or David Phillips any day of the week. She will fight for you like no one else I've ever seen. I'm just being honest she is the Best and if you get lucky enough to be appointed her thank you're lucky star's because you have been Truly Blessed. Thanks Carissa

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Gastonia, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
