She will be sweet and convincing until she gets her retainer. Then good luck getting a hold of her or having her do her job. I was told once I paid my retainer ANYTHING above that would be discussed prior to moving forward. Never happened and now she is trying to slap me with a bill that is twice my retainer for work that was a joke. She actually wasted the little time I had by asking questions in a letter she already knew the answer to. I guess her way of putting it off. She did basically nothing and now I am out money and she wants more. RUN!!!

Kelly was outstanding in working with a bank who was insistent on fulfilling our mortgage payments after the developer walked and left lot owners with no infrastructure, roads or means to develop or build their home. She handled all phases in an excellent manner and we never had to deal with the bank personally. Other "Lot" owners where harassed, called and made to feel that they did something wrong. That never came into play in our case. She was a joy to work with and walked us through the entire process painfree. I would recommend Kelly to anyone who is in the situation we were in.

I came to Kelly because I had an incident with fraudulent activity (by someone else) which left me with thousands of dollars in debt. Kelly worked diligently on my case. In just over a year she helped me with 8 accounts that were in default, as well as on the short sale of my residence. Kelly is exceptionally detail orientated. She kept me in the know for every step of the process, providing detailed summaries of my case(s) and next steps. I find Kelly to be trustworthy, professional and extremely knowledgeable in her areas of expertise (and beyond). I am sad to say my professional relationship with her has ended (thank goodness for me) :-) But I do recommend her for any legal issues you may face -- Kelly will make sure you are informed and have someone helping, guiding and facing them together as a united front. She will try her best for swift resolution with a positive outcome. I highly recommend Kelly, and would work with her again if occasion arose.

I have hired Ms. Toms on multiple occasions over the last several years and continue to be impressed by her work ethic, knowledge of the law, and attention to detail. She has always been able to clearly and concisely explain the law to me and how it pertains to my cases. Her demeanor has always been polite and respectful and she has always made sure to keep me apprised of new developments. I have seen her work first hand in depositions and in court and admired Ms. Toms as she has represented me with passion and confidence. I have dealt with other Attorneys in the past and none have been as dedicated or as personable as Ms. Toms. I fully recommend Ms. Toms to anyone looking for a strong professional Attorney who cares about her Clients and the quality of her work.

I went to see Ms. Toms during an altercation between myself and my landlords. Not only did she embarrass them in the courtroom, I didn't have to pay them a single cent of the money I, admittedly, owed them. She was very knowledgeable, expedient, and informative. I know that if I should come into any legal issues in the future, Ms. Toms will be the first person I call.

I hired Mr Williams over 8 years ago for an ESC case. He did an AWESOME job and won my case hands downs!! He also remembered exactly who I was, when I consulted him recently about a new case. Although I did not win my case, Mr Williams went above and beyond what I would have ever expected from him, and never charged me a dime. He was sincere, compassionate, light hearted and is just truly an incredible person and attorney. I highly recommend Jerome Williams, if you ever need help with the ESC!

when my husband and I decided divorce was the best option for our situation, honestly I was frightened of the uncertainty of the future and hiring an attorney added to the uncertainty. I met with Ms. Rosbrugh and found her honest, straightforward perspective refreshing. She explained the process, the issues and gave me a realistic idea of what to expect. I met with another attorney prior to hiring her, and did not get the same honest perspective and felt the other attorney just wanted my retainer money. Ms. Rosbrugh fought hard for my best interest and delivered above my expectations. I would highly recomend her for any family legal issue. Top notch attorney and super honest.

Honest people, they told us it was 50/50 that our case would meet the firms criteria, so we waited until they had time for us. They have given us the ability to seek the best care in the country for our daughter and showed us that doctors aren’t always right- For that- we forever thankful.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
