I had the honor of having Two Spruce Law helping with a an estate I had inherited and no idea the complications that were involved. Thank God for Patricia and Hannah!! They took care of everything. The filing, letters, always kept me informed and copies of everything they did. They even took the headache I would of got if I had even tried to do this on my own. Just want to thank you wonderful ladies and especially Hannah for making this all go so smoothly. If I ever (which I hope not) you ladies will always be my first choice. Thank you again for everything. Julie Neff Bend, Oregon

I found Patricia Nelson through internet research when I was looking for legal assistance to protect my vulnerable mother. I'm so glad I found Patricia Nelson and Two Spruce Law! My mother's health was in serious decline, but she had been hiding it from everyone. After thoroughly and comprehensively interviewing my mother, Patricia Nelson created a power of attorney that best suited our needs. It turned out to be the best thing for my mother's future. The power of attorney contained the exact language required for me to be able to help my mother. It stood up to challenges from financial institutions, pension administrators, medical providers, and even members of our own family. My mother is now safe, her health has improved, and her finances are protected. Patricia Nelson's demeanor is professional, yet she is warm and compassionate toward her clients. I couldn't have hoped for a better experience and a better outcome for my mother. If I could rate her higher than five stars, I would!

Upon finally reaching our vacation destination by car on the east coast, I received a phone call with the information that my sister had died unexpectedly in Bend, Oregon. After flying for 11 hours the next day I arrived at her home in a state of shock, disbelief and deep grief. I didn't know where to turn or what to do next. As executor of my sister's will, the advice I got was, "The first step is to get yourself a probate lawyer." Who in the world to call? I didn't know anyone in Bend, so who could give me a referral? I was lost. Searching online I read Atty. Patricia Nelson's excellent reviews and called her office. "The rest is history," and thank God, that history is nothing but positive. Warmly greeted by Patricia, Hannah (a paralegal) and Glenda (office manager) on each visit to their office, I found myself served by three compassionate and competent professionals. Patricia "Trish" and staff are not only concerned with every detail of the probate process, but also with the wellbeing of their clients. I highly recommend Patricia Nelson to others in order for your particular legal situation to go as smoothly as possible. I could not have done better and I am forever grateful to Patricia, Hannah and Glenda

For the past year, I have had the pleasure of working with High Desert Law following a motorcycle accident I experienced last summer. Their dedication and expertise have been truly remarkable. From the beginning, they maintained consistent communication, thoroughly explaining every step of the process, and ensuring I received the settlement I deserved during such a frightening and challenging time in my life. I cannot recommend this team more highly! They made me feel comfortable and supported throughout the entire journey, always keeping me informed and reassured.

I didn't want to ever hire a personal injury attorney, but I had the good fortune to be referred to David Rosen and his team at High Desert Law after a most unfortunate vehicle accident. The High Desert Law team were clearly experienced, hard working on my behalf and were able to best prepare me for depositions that led to a settlement beyond my expectation. You won't find a more expert, dedicated and communicative team than High Desert Law.

We are so thankful that we had the wonderful people at High Desert Law by our side when we had to deal with a parent’s worst nightmare. Our daughter was involved in a horrible car accident that almost took her life and required multiple surgeries and hospital visits. A dear friend of ours encouraged us to contact Dave and his team right away and we are so glad that we did. We were able to focus on our daughter and her healing while Dave and his team lead us through all of the legal and insurance headaches that come with such an event. Dave and his staff were there whenever we needed them and always made sure that we understood exactly what was happening. It wasn’t just “business” with the team of High Desert Law, it was a friendship that we will appreciate for a long time.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Bend, Oregon?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
