My personal preference was to communicate through phone and via email. I never had to miss work to go to the office. I was always updated with any information about my case and my questions were always answered. I never met Ann in person but she was always so kind and understanding! The staff in her office were just the same. I have referred a few friends to her and I hope your experience is just as great!

Ms. Bunker was wonderful!!! My husband and I needed something set-up quickly and she made it possible. Not only did she make it easy for my family, but worked around our crazy work schedules and guided us through the whole process. From the very beginning, she understood what my family need and what was important to us and how we wished to protect it. She gave us peace of mind. Thank you Ms. Bunker for your knowledge and guidance. We look forward to working with you!

What I love the most about having Elizabeth Uhrich as my attorney is the peace of mind she brings me. At most other law offices, you get to speak with your attorney during the consultation, and do not get to speak with them again until the court date. It is an awful feeling showing up in court feeling like you are not prepared and have not gotten to speak with your attorney regarding what is taking place. Beth contacts me directly and I love it. I do not have to go through anyone else with my questions but her. She is very prompt with returning my emails and answering any questions I may have. I also love the fact that even though my case is small, I feel like my case is important to her. She really knows her stuff and is on top of her game!

Marcus is a great young man and excellent attorney. My husband is 53 and I am still working at 49. Well my husband began having medical problems including several heart attacks in the past 2 years. He couldnt work and we were living off my part time wages. I couldnt believe he was denied benefits. We called Sam Bernstein, and eventually Marcus became our attorney. He was upfront, and he was always there to answer our questions. Even our dumb questions. At the hearing we learned that he had written several briefs to the judge and pushed to have the judge make a favorable decision for us. We were so suprised when the hearing only took 4 minutes.

Several years fighting a complicated disability claim, one that six previous lawyers refused without even reviewing the case. With two weeks before a hearing before an administrative law judge, I came across Mr Browder's profile online. For some reason, I reached out and spoke with an intake person, attempting to explain the case. A couple of hours later, I receive a call from 317 area code. After repeated rejections, I very nearly didn't answer but felt guided to do so in this case Two weeks ago, I was running around with a good bit of knowledge and zero idea how to put the pieces into coherent form. This morning, this attorney drove from Indianapolis to Columbus OH for a case he had crammed to prepare for, with no guarantee of anything, save lost time and gasoline Fifteen minutes in the hearing room and this attorney turned a very complex case into an approval. I cannot say enough about this man who has ensured my children will have a secure future after my passing How do you thank a man who stepped in when every other passed on the opportunity, one of which had an office right next to the hearing location? There is no way I can do so other than this. Any attorney who takes a case no one else wants and turns it into a six figure award in back pay alone is surely the person anyone should want in their corner. I cannot put into words, the respect I have for Mr Browder nor can I ever properly repay the debt I owe him If you have a social security claim, Thomas Browder should be your only choice. If he can fix the mess I had, in less than two weeks, he should be able to take care of anything you might need

Numerous visits to specialists only brought about the same verdicts, along with losing my employment, not to mention witnessing my life savings beginning its downward spiral When you choose Dennis Harmon to represent you, you're not buying a service- you're buying results. Mathew represented me at my ALJ hearing, and he went above and beyond to make sure I was at ease, calm, and well prepared before the hearing started. He happily answered every question I had. He went above and beyond and I felt as though he genuinely cared. I was awarded a fully favorable decision from the ALJ. The whole firm is amazing, Mathew just adds to that. Attorney Deborah A. Stewart is an excellent and outstanding Lawyer. She welcome us as clients, and she always worked in our best interest. Here is just one of many examples that really stood out to me and my husband during our case. We were filing for Guardianship/Conservatorship of our 33 year old adult daughter whom suffer's with a mental illness called, "Schizophenia". We were very honest with her about our finances, and she showed us that she was listening, because she saved us alot of time and money by suggesting that we should only file for Guardianship. My husband and I asked her why did she suggest just Guardianship, she then said, "I know that Conservatorship would mean more money expenses for you and Mr. Ford. The cost along would be a percentage of Katisa's asset, & it would mean more bookkeeping to maintain each year before the annual review required as Katisa's Conservator." Attorney Stewart's knowledge on this subject saved our family money and time. She stated that becoming Katisa's Representative payee would be enough, along with us as her Guardian would be more than enough to support our daughter thru her recovery program & final release back to our home; where we all could have a second chance to be united as a family. Katisa has been gone from us for over one entire year. That's a long time not to be able to see or talk to a love one. Her professionalism was demonstrated in court as she summons the most critical witness to speak on our behalf to show that our daughter, Katisa was a very mentally sick individual. She could have summon's Katisa's apartment manager as a witness, but I stress to her that I promised the manager, that if she would allow me to pick up my daughter's personal belonging, once she had completed evicting Katisa, that we would not have her called to be a witness. The manager was very gratiful that we kept out word to her, because she feared losing her job. When, I looked over our daughter's personal paperwork, I found alot of evidences that help us win Guardian of Katisa. So the last thing that we wanted to do, was to keep Katisa's apartment manager out of court about Katisa. Attorney Deborah A. Stewart respected our requests, because she trully cares about her clients. Another time after Guardianship was granted to us, she reached out to us when DeKalb County jail was giving us a hard time about releasing Katisa into our care. A third time, she reached out to us when Katisa's defense Attorney Lisa M. Wolff was very slow in returning our calls and emails about getting Katisa transported to a recovery program that we had set up with Peachford Hospital. I'm sure that when we set up a hospital bed with Peachford Hospital for our daughter and confirmed her medicard and medicare at the advise of Attorney Deborah A. Stewart; that's when Katisa defense Attorney Lisa Wolff got Katisa moved up on the list to go to Georgia Regional Hospital. Originally, we were told that Katisa had to wait an additional 4-6 more months, before she would be eligible to go to Georgia Regional for a recovery treatment program. Guess what, Katisa been in recovery for two weeks, now. She's getting the medical help that she really needs. Attorney Deborah A. Stewart still keeps intouch with us, because she is a woman of her word and a professional-pro in her field as a Family Attorney. She wants to share Katisa's victory, when she finally comes home to live with her family again. She has also stated the facts about Katisa's case to the point, were if Katisa does not recovery, she has already given me & my husband a list of mental institutions that we can visit before placing Katisa into their care. Me and my husband can & do, glady recommend Attorney Deborah A. Stewart to anyone who may ask us for any family legal representation in the future. She is an outstanding, honest and caring Attorney. My husband and I give Attorney Deborah A. Stewart a 10, on a scale from 0 to 10. Thank you!

Attorney James B. Winston is an excellent choice if you are searching for someone to represent you in applying for disability benefits. From the time I had my first meeting with him, to the recent end of a very lengthy process, Jim has been friendly, easily accessible and informative. He always responded promptly to any questions I had. He breaks down this tedious process into easily understandable pieces i.e. what does this mean for me? He took my concerns and my injuries seriously, and that was so valuable to me. I highly recommend Jim and his services. Mr. Mowday took my disability case and completely turned it around for me. I didn't even really know what all he was doing behind the scenes until the hearing. The judge commended him for his dedication in putting together a file that was just about as easy as possible to read. He made it so that the judge had no problem finding the information he needed and the whole hearing only ended up taking all of about ten minutes. I am very grateful to Mr. Mowday and recommend anyone looking for good representation to check with him.

I used Kathryn's legal services for my divorce. She was amazing throughout the entire process. The divorce process was very intimidating to me at first, but Kathryn's knowledge and calming personality helped make me more confident and less nervous. She was very knowledgeable about the whole process, informed me of the timeline of events for divorce, provided me with the correct forms to fill out, prepared a detailed and comprehensive separation agreement, explained in detail what the language in the agreement meant, and was always very prompt in responding to my questions and concerns via phone or email. I would highly recommend the services of Kathryn Kellett for any of your legal needs.

What a Social Security & Disability Lawyer Can Do for You

A Social Security and Disability lawyer specializes in helping individuals navigate the complex process of applying for and securing Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. These lawyers assist clients in filing applications, gathering necessary medical evidence, appealing denied claims, and representing them in hearings before administrative law judges. A lawyer can help maximize the chances of approval by ensuring that the paperwork is accurate, deadlines are met, and legal standards are addressed.

If you are disabled and unable to work, or if your Social Security Disability claim has been denied, a Social Security and Disability lawyer can guide you through the legal process to obtain the benefits you’re entitled to.

When Should I Hire a Social Security & Disability Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a Social Security and Disability lawyer in the following situations:

  • Applying for SSDI or SSI benefits: The application process for disability benefits can be complex, with strict requirements and documentation. A lawyer can assist in completing the application correctly and submitting the required medical evidence to improve your chances of approval.
  • Denied disability claim: If your initial claim for SSDI or SSI benefits has been denied, a lawyer can help file an appeal and represent you in hearings. Many claims are denied initially, and having legal representation during the appeal process significantly increases the chances of success.
  • Requesting reconsideration: After an initial denial, you have the right to request reconsideration of your claim. A lawyer can help present new medical evidence or correct any errors in your original application.
  • Hearing before an administrative law judge (ALJ): If your reconsideration request is denied, you may request a hearing before an ALJ. A lawyer can represent you during the hearing, preparing you to answer questions and presenting a strong case based on your medical and work history.
  • Proving medical conditions: If your disability involves complex medical conditions, a lawyer can help gather expert medical testimony or additional evidence to demonstrate that your condition meets the legal criteria for disability.
  • Overpayments and cessation of benefits: If the Social Security Administration (SSA) claims you were overpaid or attempts to terminate your benefits, a lawyer can assist in challenging the decision and protect your right to continue receiving benefits.
  • SSI for low-income individuals: If you are applying for SSI, which is based on financial need in addition to disability, a lawyer can help ensure that your financial records are correctly submitted to meet SSA’s strict income and asset limits.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help you avoid mistakes that could delay or jeopardize your claim.

What Does a Social Security & Disability Lawyer Do?

A Social Security and Disability lawyer provides a range of services to help individuals navigate the application and appeals process for SSDI or SSI benefits. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing initial applications: A lawyer can help prepare and file your SSDI or SSI application, ensuring that all necessary forms are completed accurately and medical evidence is included.
  • Gathering medical evidence: A lawyer works with your doctors and healthcare providers to collect medical records, treatment histories, and expert opinions to support your disability claim.
  • Filing appeals: If your initial application is denied, a lawyer can file an appeal and guide you through the reconsideration process, ensuring that any additional documentation or evidence is provided.
  • Representing you in hearings: A lawyer will represent you in front of an administrative law judge, helping you prepare for the hearing and arguing your case to demonstrate that your disability prevents you from working.
  • Handling deadlines and paperwork: A lawyer will ensure that all deadlines are met, and that any requests for additional information from the SSA are responded to promptly.
  • Negotiating settlements (for private disability insurance claims): If your disability benefits claim involves private disability insurance (in addition to or instead of SSDI/SSI), a lawyer can help negotiate a fair settlement with the insurance company.
  • Fighting benefit terminations or overpayment claims: If the SSA attempts to terminate your benefits or claims you were overpaid, a lawyer can defend you in administrative proceedings or file for a waiver or reconsideration.

How Are Social Security & Disability Lawyers Paid?

Social Security and Disability lawyers are typically paid on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if your case is successful, either through the approval of your disability benefits or winning an appeal. Here's how it generally works:

  • Contingency fee: The fee is usually 25% of your past-due (backpay) benefits, but no more than $7,200. This fee structure is set by the SSA, and lawyers cannot charge more than this amount for SSDI or SSI cases.
  • No cost for future benefits: Lawyers are not entitled to any portion of your future monthly disability benefits. Their fee is strictly limited to a percentage of your backpay.
  • Additional costs: In some cases, you may need to pay for additional expenses, such as obtaining medical records or expert witness testimony. These costs are usually minimal, but it’s essential to ask your lawyer about any additional expenses upfront.

It’s essential to confirm fee arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to avoid misunderstandings.

How Much Does a Social Security & Disability Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a Social Security and Disability lawyer is typically structured around the contingency fee system outlined by the SSA. General cost information includes:

  • Contingency fee: The lawyer’s fee is capped at 25% of your backpay, with a maximum of $7,200. For example, if you are awarded $10,000 in backpay, the lawyer will receive $2,500 (25%), and you will receive the remaining $7,500.

Overall, there is no financial risk in hiring a Social Security and Disability lawyer, as they only get paid if your case is successful.

Top Questions to Ask a Social Security & Disability Lawyer

Before hiring a Social Security and Disability lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise to handle your case effectively. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with Social Security Disability cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling SSDI and SSI cases similar to yours, particularly if you have a complex medical condition.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Confirm that the lawyer charges a contingency fee and that you won’t owe any fees unless your claim is successful. Ask if there are any additional costs for medical records or other expenses.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case and the potential challenges you may face.
  4. How long will the process take?
Disability claims can take time, especially if you’re appealing a denial. Ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to last and what the typical timeline is for cases like yours.
  5. How will you help me prepare for my hearing?
If your case is going to a hearing before an administrative law judge, ask the lawyer how they will help you prepare for testimony and present your medical evidence effectively.
  6. What happens if I’m denied again?
Ask about the next steps if your reconsideration or appeal is denied, including the possibility of further appeals to federal court.

How to Check the Credibility of a Social Security & Disability Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable Social Security and Disability lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice law and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for Social Security experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in Social Security and Disability law and have successfully handled cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on Social Security Disability matters.
  • Check for memberships in relevant organizations: Membership in organizations like the National Organization of Social Security Claimants' Representatives (NOSSCR) can indicate that the lawyer is committed to representing disability claimants.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a Social Security and Disability lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Medical records: Bring copies of your medical records, including doctor’s notes, test results, treatment histories, and any disability-related diagnoses.
  • List of medications and treatments: Provide a detailed list of any medications you are taking, treatments you have received, and ongoing medical care related to your disability.
  • Denial letters (if applicable): If your disability claim has been denied, bring a copy of the denial letter from the SSA, along with any documentation related to your appeal.
  • Work history: Provide information about your previous jobs and work history, including details about how your disability has impacted your ability to work.
  • Social Security application (if already filed): If you’ve already submitted an application, bring a copy of the application and any correspondence you’ve had with the SSA.
  • List of questions: Prepare a list of questions you have about the legal process, the lawyer’s fees, and what to expect in terms of timelines and outcomes.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and provide the best possible legal advice tailored to your situation.
