Caleb was honest and told us if we had a chance of resolving our issue with some type of mediation or whether it had a chance of going to court. Actually Caleb handled the matter with a phone call. It was resolved. Thanks Caleb !

My husband and I found ourselves in a less than desireable situation following the purchase of our first home, which led us to seek legal assistance. We found Caleb's firm through a referral & couldn't be more pleased with the outcome of our case and how professionally it was handled. His honesty and knowledge were clear from our initial consultation. Our questions/concerns were always addressed in a timely manner and we were always informed of the progress of our case. We are very grateful to have found Caleb & his firm & would highly recommend him to anyone seeking legal counsel.

Caleb Moore really stepped up to the plate for me when no other Attorney was willing to take my case on a contingency basis. There were times when things looked bleak, that he had to "give it to me straight" and that was hard to take, but I appreciate honesty, so that was fine. I did feel a couple of times that he was ready to "throw in the towel" on my case, which, at times seemed like a losing battle, and that was discouraging. He wanted me to settle a few times, for an amount I knew was a joke and I kept saying no. In the end, I'm glad I didn't settle, and he hung in there with me. When my day came to finally go to court, I couldn't have been anymore impressed with his performance at trial. He was amazing in the court room. I knew then, that day, I had a wonderful attorney, as "the proof is in the pudding." My case was won! Would I recommend Mr. Moore? You bet I would. In fact, I already have! You're in good hands with this one.

Caleb was the third attorney we worked with and he's the one that brought our case across the winning finish line!!!!! We were referred to him from another colleague of ours and he was as amazing as promised! Caleb was very responsive any time we needed something and he gave us all of our options in a clear manner that was easy for us to understand so that we could make a decision. Each time there was a new action taken in our case, he let us know exactly what was going and what it meant to us. His knowledge made us feel at ease and confident in being able to make the right decisions for us. You can't always find someone who is good at their job and is also a good communicator. Caleb is both. We would refer Caleb to everyone we know!

Very knowledgeable attorney. He beat out a team of attorneys from a much more expensive firm. He was more fair in his billing practices than other attorneys I have used.

Mr. Smotherman helped me get permanent and full custody of my daughter and I will forever be grateful. Words cannot express how thankful I am to this man and his God given abilities but I will try. As an African-American male trying to get custody of my then 4 year old daughter, the odds were stacked against me. However, Smotherman took the time to listen were others just blew me off. He was able to build and executed one of the best defenses I have ever seen. The case centered around the facts that the mother was actively alienating me from my daughter's life by hiding her from me during my visitations weekends. Every 1st, 3rd and 5th weekend I would drive form Odessa, TX to Dallas, TX, a 6 hour drive one way, just to see my daughter. I had never missed a visitation or a child support payment. The mother was even harassing the schools to keep me from seeing my daughter at lunch time. The mother even had me removed from being able to see her at her after school daycare were I was tutoring my daughter and helping her with school work. The mother also created false allegations that my wife and I were physically and sexually abusive to my daughter and all these allegation where proven false. The mother was later convicted of felony custodial interference. Throughout the entire two year process (the Judge dying in the case, several reset dates and having to deal with a defense attorney that would do anything to win and in my opinion no professional at times) Smotherman never lost his composure and remained a man of integrity even when faced with shady dealings from the defense. He remained true to his Christian identity....He was fair and timely with his responses...and always professional. Mr. Smotherman is the type of person who has a passion for justice and helping others. This case had so many sides and it was so deep (before Smotherman the case had already taken a year) that literally no other attorney would take my case. I prayed for someone to help me and spent my days calling and writing attorneys only to receive countless "No"s. However, Mr. Smotherman said, "Yes" and that has made all the difference. I cannot say thank you enough. Today, marks the day the child custody case is officially closed and the final orders have been signed. This man has given me my life back and a chance to be a full-time father to my daughter something I did not have the privilege of having. I always promised myself that when I had kids, I would not be like my dad, an absentee father, I was going to be there for my kids and now I can keep that promise to my daughter and myself.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Bedford, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
