Several years ago, I had the unfortunate experience of having the contractor for my custom home go bankrupt. Building a home was stressful enough in and of itself, but it became a nightmare when I found out five months after moving into the home that my contractor had not paid several of his subcontractors in full and they were then coming after me for something I had already paid the contractor for.
