I had the unfortunate experience of dealing with Brixton Hakes. He was disinterested in my case from the beginning. He was extremely hard to get ahold of. He acted like he had better things to do. The way he represented me was a joke and I actually think I would have done a better job myself in hindsight. Their receptionist was always rude. I wish I would have picked someone else to represent me. I never left my vehicle, was assaulted with my 4 year old son in the back, and I still ended up with the charge.. pathetic. This law firm and our “ justice system” is a complete joke. The ugly Tesla they drive around in, is as pathetic as they are.

3
Caring, empathetic, and understanding towards clients dealing with difficult legal situations

4
Provide reasonable and transparent pricing, without hidden fees or surprises
“Their fees are far better than my ex are paying, I know that.”
5
Efficiently resolve cases, achieving favorable results for clients
“Brixton Hakes at Dexter Law helped me recently with a county court case. Could not recommend him and his practice more to those who are in need of legal services. I immediately knew he was a fighter and would do just that on my behalf.”
Cons
1
Lack of communication and responsiveness from some attorneys, leaving clients feeling uninformed and neglected
“The lawyer we used was understanding to our situation and made us feel like family. He was amazing at making us feel at ease even though we were going through something really hard.”
2
Concerns about the quality of representation and attention to detail, resulting in unfavorable outcomes for clients
“I spent over $3,700 and the lawyer and the firm did nothing to earn that money. They charged me for every little text, email and phone call. I went to mediation and my lawyer did nothing just sat next to me for 7 hours and did not fight for me one bit.”

I am so grateful to Attorney Shorts. He helped my years ago with an eviction from a couple who trashed my house--went to court but the people settled before the judge--I am convinced it was the professionalism and swiftness with which Jeremy responded. Now just recently I want to know about selling on contract and he gave me the BEST answers so I don't make a huge mistake. If you are a landlord go this guy BEFORE you rent or lease your place out--use his paperwork (no cost) and then use him if push comes to shove!

I consulted with Jeremy regarding some disputed move-out costs. He was personable, friendly, understanding, knowledgeable, and clear. I didn't feel like I was left guessing about my legal situation or that I didn't understand what his opinion was. In an uneasy situation, I appreciate the certainty a good attorney provides.

Jeremy and his team had done a great job with an eviction! It is never a pleasant task but they made it simple, easy and stress free. I called their office late on Friday and Jeremy returned my call that same evening to explain the process. He also sent me a detailed email on the steps to take. I had him handle the process and he had a notice served Monday and tenants were gone by Thursday. Their follow up was great. I also used his Rental Agreement which was a big help. I highly recommend using his firm and will continue.

William’s insight and candid advice were exactly what I needed to deal with an employment matter. He listened attentively and asked the right questions before weeding out what was immaterial to my case and honing in on the pertinent details. Once he had the details and defined the legal issue as a breach of contract, he presented my alternatives, the likelihood of a successful result and any potential impacts of moving forward. He was sharp. He was insightful. His advice was on the ball. He was exactly what I needed.

I have retained Bill on several occasions to deal with sticky situations that other attorneys would not so easily or carefully be able to navigate with so much success. He is thorough, ethical, knows the law, and knows how to remind opposing counsel on the occasion they forget. Most importantly, he doesn't drag his feet. He gets on top of what needs to be done in a timely manner. Whenever I work with Bill, I never feel like I even need to consider anyone else. He is that thorough and effective.

Bill represented me in my forced separation from my employer. Bill was the right choice for me and at the end of a long 6 week process a settlement was reached with my former employer. I could have gone further regarding legal action but Bill's counsel was to close out this chapter in my life.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Orem, Utah?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
