A bit lacking on customer service and manners. Every time I call them my "hellos", "good mornings" and "have a nice day" are greeted with silence, a hang up click or some snarky response. Do they know they're talking to paying customers? I wonder.... Call me old fashion, but I do appreciate a respectful exchange and greeting. Especially if I am paying top dollar for boilerplate templates I could potentially fill out myself.

Bottom Line - Colleen Haddow is the BEST attorney I could have ever wished for --my only regret is that I didn't start with her from the beginning. Ms. Colleen Haddow came as a recommendation from my previous law firm following failed mediation in a highly complex, contentious, and financially draining divorce and custody case. The opposing counsel - whose professional reputation precedes her as a person devoid of ethics and civility, made finding a willing, capable, and affordable replacement daunting. Colleen personally and immediately took my call for an intake interview. When I opened by informing her of who opposing counsel was, she simply laughed with complete confidence, accepted my case, and immediately got my case moving on the right track. Unlike opposing counsel in this case, Colleen is a legal professional with impeccable integrity and ethics; but not to be confused with someone who submits to bully tactics or shies away from confrontation in or out of the courtroom. In contrast, Ms. Haddow is emotionally intelligent and well versed in the rules of the court to effectively persuade and, if need be, compel cooperation from even the most difficult of personalities. In doing so, she also remained a steadfast, approachable, and responsive attorney (often responding to me within minutes), who consistently addressed my concerns, provided objective perspective, and gave absolute sound guidance amidst the evolving challenges within the case. In short, she kept me sane and grounded in arguably the most stressful and emotionally draining period of my life. In addition to her superior soft skills, Colleen also demonstrated unmatched expertise and experience in distilling and framing the key issues of my case (fully explaining the legalities), to include those I hadn't initially seen, understood, or considered. She proved invaluable in interpreting and exposing financial information, indiscretions, and activities. She was also proactive, strategic, anticipatory, and prepared always and on all fronts. I am convinced that she and her abilities alone are the REASON that ultimately resulted in my case outcome far surpassing my initial expectations from failed mediation, and resulting in a final settlement that exceeded my best-case scenario in court (albeit that she was fully prepared and willing to execute). Colleen saved me thousands in legal expenses, but more importantly, she helped me overcome a series of short-term losses in exchange for an overwhelming long-term gain in my journey to a new and better life. In the strongest terms possible, I highly recommend Colleen Haddow for all family litigation.

I called for information but the secretary got angry and hung up. I hope she learns not to behave this way with potential customers.

Redmon, Peyton & Braswell LLP are absolutely the best family lawyers we have ever used. Very professional and thorough, yet extremely compassionate and understanding during the illness and death of loved ones. And Amanda Hayes was very accessible and a huge help answering questions about govrnment benefit forms, bank accounts and other issues. Their prices are very reasonable. They charged about one third that a similar firm in Alexandria charged and we still had to find Estate Executor/Administrator on our own for the expensive firm.

Fred and his team are seasoned professionals. I had multiple issues with a vindictive woman and we were awarded the divorce (even though the Ex bought suit), We won a Custody Battle when the Ex wanted to pull my children out of state, and the Team just got my Ex to sign a $40,000 2 party IRS check that she refused to sign for 6 months. I can't say enough good things about this team. This is the place to go to find an honest, consciences, and humble Legal Team!!

Divorce is not a pleasant process, but with Fred's representation I knew I had a solid advocate who would be compassionate toward me but would also provide blunt, pragmatic advice when I needed it. He helped me through the process, and along the way demonstrated that his long experience has provided him with insights into how the "other side" will behave that I would not have received from a lesser attorney. Fred's knowledge of military processes and how the law applied to military couples was invaluable in my case as well.

After my ex-wife and I separated, I contacted Fred upon a referral from a relative. Being separated from my wife and facing a potential divorce was a most trying and emotional time for me. I had no real idea of what was involved in a divorce proceeding. Fred was very understanding and empathetic to my situation, provided me with sound advice, and helped me proceed one step at a time, recognizing that reconciliation with my wife was still a hope for me. When it was apparent that a divorce was going to be the outcome, Fred guided me through each step of the process. During the six months that I was separated from my wife, Fred provided me with wise counsel, fully explaining available options, in response to developing situations/difficult interactions with my wife that ensued. In following Fred's expert legal advice as we collaborated on the "Separation and Property Settlement Agreement", I was able to minimize the financial impact of the divorce proceeding. I highly recommend Fred if you find yourself in a situation where you are facing a potential divorce and need the legal services of someone you can trust and have full confidence in their expertise and legal advice. Fred and his team are consummate professionals.

Gregory English has handled several legal matters for members of my family, and we have always been highly satisfied with the results he has obtained. He is reliable and always gives his clients his full effort. Atty. English has given sound advice about whether to accept a plea deal and will mount a vigorous and effective defense in court if needed. I recommend him without reservation.

My name is Wazhma. I have never referred anyone to Mr. English. I hired Mr. English because someone fabricated lies on me. Mr. English showed up one hour prior to the actual court time. He was very professional and he proved throughout the court time that everything was fabricated by the other party. Mr. English won the cases. The person who showed lots of hate probably is the case that individual lost and Mr. English won the cases. I encourage everyone to consult with Mr. English so you could find out for yourself that everything the hater said is fabrication. Mr. English is an awesome, loyal, amazing and most importantly trust worthy and go getter lawyer.

Nora was recommended to me by the municipality. The initial consultation was very informative and Nora explained everything in an easy to understand way and provided the reassurance during the difficult time. Her outlook of this being a business decision was the most grounding and rebuilding aspect of the bankruptcy process. I am very glad that we opted to proceed with Nora's help, as it not only made the filing easier, but provided the peace of mind that we were doing the right thing. Thank you Nora!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Alexandria, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
