When I was going through my divorce this past year, Tawyna was the right person to represent me. She was all business and fought for me like no lawyer I have ever had. If you need a strong lawyer, that has your back, and always thinking about you and your needs, she is the lawyer you for you.She saves me lots of money and was always very professional and matter of fact. The billing retainer was very reasonable in which my ex spouse spent three times more than my case. I didn’t have to be pay my ex spouse attorney fees, which saved me tons of money. Tawyna is the lawyer you need and would be foolish to go with someone else. Will go to battle with her again in the future. Her legal team is amazing and the model of professionalism. If you need a lawyer, better call Tawyna!

I was referred to Tawnya by The Alexandria Bar Association (ACBA) Lawyer Referral Service, for my uncontested divorce. I arrived at the office for my consultation appointment. The receptionist (a gentleman, didn't catch his name) didn't tell Tawnya that I arrived. 10 minutes later, she came out, and was surprised to see me. Unfortunate, but fine. Now we can begin. We get to her office, and the conversation went thus: What's your situation? I'm getting a divorce How long were you married? 6 years I sent you paperwork, you didn't complete it. Yes I did, I emailed it back to you. Do you have a signed settlement agreement? No, she won't sign. Did you send that to me? Yes, in the same email. Oh! There it is. I was beyond frustrated. I booked a 30 minute appointment, and the majority of it was eaten answering questions that I had already provided answers and documentation for when she requested it 4 days prior. I was very thorough, to avoid this exact scenario. I wanted this meeting to be productive. It wasn't. She talked me through the process, answered a few specific questions I had brought with me, but ultimately, nothing I couldn't have found online. Very disappointing experience.

This law office I visited was exceptional. The lawyers were highly knowledgeable and professional. They provided clear and concise advice, and their attention to detail was impressive. The office itself was well-organized and had a welcoming atmosphere. I was thoroughly impressed with their expertise and the level of service they provided. Overall, it was a great experience and I would highly recommend this law office.

Excellent service in every respect! Yancee Ellis, who handled my case, not only quickly understood the facts of the case from my descriptions, he also researched and uncovered additional facts on line, and from his sources, and developed winning defense arguments at the Preliminary Hearing, resulting in an extraordinarily rare, "No Probable Cause" outcome bringing my case to a successful conclusion. I hearty recommend him, and the firm for anyone needing good, through legal council.

I worked primarily with Jessica Carmichael, although Zachary Deubler and Amy also assisted me. I have had less than pleasant experiences with an attorney in the past, so I was reticent initially to hire Jessica. However, it turned out to be the best decision I could have made. Jessica is strikingly intelligent, perceptive, and fierce. Not only does she have a sensitivity for the most intricate of legal nuances, she has the bravery and will to advance carefully crafted legal arguments and fight for her clients' rights. She is unafraid to speak her mind - to the court or to you. She will tell you what she thinks is the likeliest outcome. But, she also respects the agency and independence of her clients, working with them to develop a defense that is true to their wishes during incredibly vulnerable times. Everyone at this firm was accommodating, respectful, and helpful. Zachary and Amy were also particularly willing to go out of their way to help in any way they could. Besides being professionals performing an incredible social function, they are also genuinely decent people. I could not be happier with Jessica's representation. I do not think anyone else could have done a better job. I highly recommend you hire her and her team.

I engaged Kylie Newsom of Moore, Christoff, & Siddiqui, to represent me as the Plaintiff to argue a civil litigation case concerning negligence in a dog attack. Kylie made an incisive examination of the facts, and questioned witnesses in court with precision and poise that resulted in a favorable ruling. I could not have been more pleased with Kylie’s diligence and heartily recommend her legal services.

Emily Sripinyo is a Legal Superstar! 🌟 Emily Sripinyo truly went above and beyond in reviewing my prenup. Despite juggling a busy schedule with other court cases, she made sure to dedicate ample time and attention to my needs. The prenup, originally drafted by my fiancée's lawyer, was a daunting 37 pages long, filled with complex legal jargon. Emily was a beacon of clarity and support, consistently reminding me that my fiancée and I are on the same team. She meticulously sifted through the document, eliminating unnecessary terms and provisions, and brilliantly condensed it to a much more manageable 24 pages. Her explanations were clear and thorough, making what seemed like an overwhelming task feel completely manageable. Emily's dedication, expertise, and personable approach made the entire process so much easier for me. I am incredibly grateful for her outstanding work and highly recommend her to anyone in need of legal assistance. Emily Sripinyo is truly the best! 🙌✨

Exceptional Representation: Kylie I can't express enough how grateful my roommate and I are for having Kylie represent us during our potential eviction ordeal. From the outset, Kylie's affordability, coupled with her exceptional communication skills, put us at ease. Throughout the entire process, she made sure we understood every step and procedure involved, ensuring transparency and clarity. Her dedication to our case was evident, and she went above and beyond to ensure a smooth resolution. Thanks to Kylie, what could have been a stressful experience turned into a manageable situation. We highly recommend her services to anyone in need of reliable legal representation. My roommate and I are young women with little experience of legal proceedings. I promise you won’t regret your decision!

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Alexandria, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
