I had two consultations with Ms. Ehlenberger and both opportunities were bad experiences. As other reviews mentioned, Ms. Ehlenberger was more interested in having a friendly relationship with opposing counsel than in protecting my best interests. She also didn’t have the answer to many of my questions and was not pleasant at all. I had a consultation with another attorney and realized immediately the huge difference in knowledge and treatment.

Carol helped me with my custody case and was able to keep my daughter from relocating with her mother to another state. She is professional, straight forward and honest. It was a pleasure working with her and her team. Everyone at the firm is very professional and helpful in every way possible. She was very prompt with communication and was transparent the whole time with what to expect during the case. I highly recommend Carol to anyone looking for a lawyer who is trustworthy, experienced and very knowledgeable!!

Carol was great!! From the very beginning I was told what to expect and what my chances were in my custody battle. There were no surprises, just good old fashion honesty and dedicated work.

Carol Ehlenberger was exactly what I needed for my divorce. I had a "simple" non contested divorce this past year and she took such good care of my case. I am sure it was "small" in comparison to most she handles but she treated my case with such importance that I never felt worried about any small details. She took time for all of my calls and repeat questions. When I needed something done by a certain time it was done and done exactly the way I wanted it. I never had to worry about small details and got to go about my daily life and work without having to stress about the process of my case. I have recommended several folks to Carol and a few have retained her services as well. They were also very happy. Even my former spouse passed along her contact information to friends of his for her services. Thank you again for all of the help!

Carol took my divorce case knowing that Spousal support would likely be the only contentious issue. In 6 months time, the only thing Carol accomplished for me was to deliver my answers to my spouses Interrogatories and document requests, 2 weeks overdue. Carol was hard to get a hold of and was unresponsive to my specific requests. She was determined to have me agree to paying more in temporary support than I could afford and when I finally said no, she tried to withdraw as my counsel with hearings scheduled in court just days away. In my opinion, Ms. Ehlenberger was more interested in having a friendly relationship with opposing counsel than in protecting my best interests.

Katherine was amazing to work with. She was very thorough with her explanations of everything we were working on for our trust. She was also very patient with us and answered all our questions (probably more than once) as most of these topics were new to us. I would highly recommend Katherine and team!

Katherine has been an outstanding asset as my business attorney. So I was thrilled to learn of her expertise in trusts and estates. She shined there in new ways. As always, she was responsive, professional, and efficient. She helped me be conscientious on spend to produce the best value given my goals. But estate planning involves not only complicated legal options, but requires working through emotionally difficult choices. And my case was not an easy one. She was wonderful! Her strong communication skills, her demeanor, and her experience in how choices play out practically for families made a big difference. She got me over the finish line with a structure and documents that give me new comfort. And her knowledge of business law meant that aspects of my estate involving my business could be addressed in the process. She turned what could have been grueling with another attorney into an empowering experience.

Kristina Cruz did an excellent job in my child custody case. I now have full custody of my son and am very happy. Miss Cruz explain everything to me as far as how my court case would go and that's just the way it went. I would strongly recommend Miss Cruz to anyone who has a child custody case.

I contacted Kristina five years ago when my ex and I separated. I specifically hired her because of her vast knowledge of military law. Since my ex husband was in the military, I knew I needed a lawyer such as Kristina. From the moment Kristina took my case, I knew she would fight hard for me. I was so impress with her attention to detail such as her research on topics such as spousal support and what exactly am I entitled to in regards to military benefits. She never gave up on me and my case. It paid off because in the end, I received everything that we requested in the divorce proceedings. My kids and I will be forever grateful to Kristina. Because of her, I am able to give my kids the life they deserve.

Kristina, supported me through a very complex divorce and custody case. The situation was very unique, complicated and emotional. Kristina demonstrated her expertise command of the law and the court systems. Kristina made this difficult situation as palatable as possible while providing me a sense of comfort that she and her firm were doing everything in their power to represent my best interests. Kristina's court presence was exceptional and it was obvious to me that the judges had great respect for her litigation skills and her command in the court room. The outcome of my case was beyond what I had expected. As a father, I was awarded full legal and physical custody of my son which is generally unheard of in the state Virginia. Also, my financial interests were protected beyond what I had expected. Cannot thank Kristina enough for her hard work and diligence with my case.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Reston, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
