After attempting to work directly with the insurance companies and getting nowhere, working with Sethi and Sledd was one of the best decisions I could have made. Once it was in their hands I did not have to worry about any of the details and they were able to resolve my claim quickly. I highly recommend both Gobind and Samantha. They are both compassionate and caring Lawyers and a pleasure to work with. Maria their office manager was also very effective at keeping me in the know and handling any documents along the way.

As someone who unfortunately had a personal injury at a public facility, resulting in a chronic illness, I needed an attorney who would provide legal council and representation for myself. After conducting research for an attorney, I found Sethi & Sledd, PLLC, which ultimately was a wise choice as my representative. Mr. Gobind Sethi personally and willingly listened to my injury concerns, and to any and all information and questions I had throughout the whole case. As much as I was stressed at the beginning going into unknown and difficult territory regarding a case for my injury, it quickly became evident to me that Mr. Sethi has a thorough knowledge of law, a passion for his work and to help me as his client, and to ensure I understood what was happening, what was needed, the case status and legal documentation needs, and all-the-while communicating with me as often as needed. Multiple times throughout my case, Gobind discussed ideas and information that I would not have even thought of, clearly demonstrating his knowledge, creativity, and critical thinking and good judgement skills – I fully understand why it’s wise to have a professional representative such as Mr. Sethi. Gobind alleviated my concerns and stress, and guided me and the whole process until a successful final case resolution. He and his team maintained a realistic approach while still having a strategy; looking at all options or potential outcomes. Gobind was a pleasure to work with, and I’m thankful to know him. I highly recommend Mr. Sethi and his team as a highly dedicated, knowledgeable, skilled, and persevering representative. Ken

After talking with several law firms specializing in vehicular accidents we decided to go with Sethi & Sledd. We were very impressed with our treatment and the representation Ms. Samantha Sledd provided us. Ms. Sledd took the time to patiently guide us through the entire claim process, kept us informed, promptly answered our questions, and carefully explained our options. She adeptly handled all the behind-the-scene administrative paperwork and negotiations with the auto and health insurance companies, ensuring we received a fair settlement which we could be satisfied with. We highly recommend Sethi & Sledd for personal injury cases involving auto accidents.

Scott has been my company's trusted legal advisor since our inception over 12 years ago and before that in several other ventures. He offers sound advice and legal service on issues including employment matters, corporate governance, contract negotiation and tax compliance. He has always been incredibly responsive and succinct in helping us work through our legal matters. There are very few of our advisors who have lasted the test of time like Scott. I couldn't recommend him highly enough. COO of $100 million US services company

Elizabeth Ho is an excellent choice - Thorough and knowledgeable, and spends time to listen to your concerns and questions. I chose this lawyer after reviewing about 6 other lawyers in the Washington, DC area. Elizabeth Ho helped us process my marriage based green card application and wills. She responded to my very first phone inquiry by spending quite a bit of time answering my questions and describing the application process in detail. Right after, she followed up with lists of documents to gather prior to seeing her in person. Ms. Ho was very careful in reviewing my green card application and providing advice as to what happens next. In addition, she offered to write our wills, which I meant to do for a while. This was perfect timing, because wills serve a very strong evidence of bona fide relationship. Importantly, once our application was submitted, Elizabeth kept following up on our application status , letting us know every time she receives a notice from government offices. This was very helpful since at one point, my mail stopped coming and I was afraid to miss my OPT notices. This was also especially appreciated because our case was already completed, and Ms. Ho was providing these updates solely as a courtesy. I have already receive my green card. Excellent choice - I highly recommend this lawyer.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Reston, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
